I've no problems with the controls or camera because they weren't great in Ico or SotC so I'm some what used to it, I can let that slide. 70 euros in Gamestop, ain't paying that for it.

The problems the game has are far outweighed by the experience the title delivers.
Some "problems" that have been described by some as game breaking, the behaviours of Trico, are deliberate, as the developers didn't want it to be a "crate" to be moved and directed with ease to where it's needed, and he struggle to be understood links and underpins the relationship that develops between the hero and the beast, right up to the moving final act.
The controls are very PS2 though, but you'll get accustomed.
Camera issues are more intrusive, though only intermittently so and can be managed.
    It's no 6/10 game that's for sure!

I'm sorry but the behaviours of Trico aren't deliberate, they are just bugs. And if they aren't bugs (which to reiterate they are, it's very easy to see where the programming cracks are and how they aren't deliberate) team ico would be pretty much ignoring first principles of good game design.

I wouldn't describe the problems the game has as game breaking, other than the framerate which can be for people sensitive to it, but the janky movement and wonky AI just make the game really awkward and not a lot of fun.

The Trico affection isn't working on me either. The puppy dog eyes are a bit manipulative and his wonky AI certainly isn't endearing.

I'm not too far into the game but really feel it's not the classic some people are making it out to be. Probably worth playing because, well it's been so long since it's been announced but so far it's Team Ico's worst and least interesting game.

The price has tanked everywhere else. Probably sold terribly. Argos and Amazon are about 35-40

60 in Argos but 40 on Amazon, I will have to play it, shame its development was a mess. Must look it up and find out what went wrong all those years ago.

Japanese developed game so unfortunately we might never know. They can be quite candid about it.

It's worth playing even just for the fascination that it's actually out. It's not bad. It just has problems.

As a counterpoint, I maintain it is one of the most beautifully realised, ambitious and artistically accomplished games I have ever played, where the flaws were minor annoyances that did little to dim the game's myriad of accomplishments. Can probably count on one hand the games that had me mutter 'holy ****!' or break into a child-like grin quite as often as it did.

I played the Nier: Automata demo last night. It's really, really good.

Way too much cool stuff coming out in the next two months.

The programming team behind TLG have stated again and again that Trico's behaviour is deliberate.
I'll dig out a reference later.

As some one that has experience coding AI it's very obvious that a lot of Trico's AI code and animations are key framed which when mixed with the physics of the world don't work when something unexpected happens. It's different from say the approach most modern developers take where the AI and animation system is controlled by the physics engine, it's what bungie pioneered with Halo 2 and Naughty Dog have been excelling at.

Also it's not just Trico, the main character is the same which is why clamouring over any slightly complex terrain is a bit of a disaster for the animation and movement system. Considering the size of the dev team it's hard to blame them for it as it's a very complex bit of coding.

I dunno... this sounds a little like the letterboxing excuse with The Evil Within.

Speaking of jobs, I'm changing myself this weekend.
I'll finish up as a CNM2 on Sunday evening and return on Monday morning as a..... CNM3!
Much more than a single digit.
I have to change my shift of the last 23 years, working every other day for 13 hours and, instead, going 9-5, 5 days a week....
I'm also leaving direct contact with Service Users behind and entering the office world proper :(
Not looking forward to it at all!
I'll be moving into the admin offices next door... poacher turned gameskeeper!

I'll either be here more often, bored, or I'll be here less often, too busy!
Either way, it'll be fewer days off for me every fortnight and, so, less game time, oh noes!

    Just, keep playing.
You can sink time into games about shooting a love gun at school girls, you can persist with The Last Guardian!
I mean, you're in Sligo, what else have you got to do, aside from watch the rain?

But I've atelier Totori to play though, a game about a 14 year old anime girl that.... Maybe I shouldn't say these things on a public forum.

I'll finish it but kind of finding it a slog but as you say at least it's more interesting than the usual PS4 fare.

Found my old copy of Time Crisis when I was over in my folks and dying for a game of it. Haven't the gun but will keep my eye out for one. Would it work on the TV's nowadays? Also found Front Missions 3, the only one I ever played and enjoyed it, it was the last PS1 game I bought.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,321 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

You need a CRT for a lightgun to work.

Also Front Mission 3 is a class act. Two storylines in one game as well!

Think I only ever did the one story line. Bought it after I got my PS2 when I was waiting for games to come out for it. Was there any on the PS2? The intro looked amazing I remember.

You don't fall into jobs like that so you've clearly been very good at your role, so, many congratulations. Try to remember the N bit of your title though, cos an awful lot of managers soon forget.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

I remember one storyline was obviously a bit rushed but still a lot of fun. It was linear while the other have a few alternative missions and side paths.

There were 2 front mission games on PS2, FM4 which only came out in the US in English. It was ok but the much bigger maps slowed the game an awful lot. The intro was awesome though. FM5 scars of war only got a Japanese release which is a pity because it was a real return to form for the series, back to the FM1 and 3 roots of the series and a fantastic game. A fan translation project was started and finished so it's playable in English. They started translating fm2 and fm alternative but gave up before completion.

There was also a remake of the original with added characters and features for the DS released in the US.

Oh, I've been nursing for 27 years, double jobbing as nurse and manager for the last 9, so I won't be forgetting my roots, no worries about that.
But my focus is on making sure the people living here get the best from the people working here, that's been my approach for 9 years, I expect it won't change over the next 10.... when I retire, woohoo!

I spent €200 on a Samsung Nuon, €60 on Tempest 3000 for it, €100 or so for a donor Samsung DVD player to repair the Nuon, so that was a total of €360 to play the only game worth playing on the thing.... and then I sold it.....

Biggest single item is about 60 euro for a Divmmc for my Spectrum. Lot of small spends (which have seriously added up) on games.
