A featherweight title fight has never been on a fight night card. Don't see why that would change now with Aldo after getting so much exposure coming up to 194.

The general public think Aldo is useless though because he got starched, ask any casual and they think hes a bum.

Casuals won't be buying a non-Rousey/McGregor PPV in any case.

that was with frank and lorenzo in charge who weren't 4bn in the hole...they've a lot more pressure on them and cant afford ppvs that barely sell, how can aldo expect to draw casuals? he hasnt even bothered his arse to learn to speak english...

That's incorrect. Aldo has been a dominant champion going ten years. The general public who don't lick McGregors ring piece know he got clipped and can happen to anyone.

I don't think Rockhold is useless. 9/10 he wins that fight.

in my mind, at least, conor can let the featherweight build up again whether that is holloway v pettis, winner v aldo, and then champion defends, ... conor can still come down and fight the champ then. or once conor is gone from feather he is gone?

Who gives a flying **** about idiots that say Aldo, probably the greatest FW of all time, is a 'bum'?

When people are discussing the ppv pull its relevant to point out what I have experienced from casual bandwagon viewers, these people are the ones buying ppv's there isnt 1 million mma fans tuning into these ppvs, and Im fairly sure they wont be watching Aldo, again it makes no odds to me I watch every card but this is the reality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,590 ✭✭✭CurryFlavoured

It's relevant to the UFC. But personally as a legit fan who doesn't just follow the Rousey/Conor circus, I couldn't give a **** if 10 or 10 million casuals buy a Holloway/Aldo fight. Quoting figures is just another way of pandering to Conor, I care about how they fight not how many watch.

Aldo was undisputed champion for 7 years and has the most consecutive title defenses in UFC featherweight history. Remind me of Mcgregors FW legacy again?

You should have your own Mcgregor thread that only you can post in. You can update us on how you've been "training UFC" for 5 years and constantly remind us all you've been going to every event since you were 4.

And to call any ranked UFC fighter that isn't McGregor a 'bum'

to be fair either max or pettis will be interim so he wont be undisputed?

also think its bizarre that you use the fact a guy trains bjj to discredit his opinion

I don't think all his fans are morons, just some off them.

What else should I be posting?

I dont care about ppv sales. I like watching the fights. I dont train bjj.

They made a mess of stripping mcgregor and just handing it to Aldo. They should have had him fight someone for the now vacant title.

Holding a belt without defending shouldnt happen. Whether by injury or moving to different weight there should be a set time where you have to defend tour belt. Then everyone knows where they stand. Champion and challengers

I know mcgregor sells but i want to watch all the fights and fighters. If the UFC want to make back the 4 billion they bought it for they need more than mcgregor and rousey unless they both fight 4 times a year

While that type of fighter wont come around too often, and i understand they will and should get treated differently, they wont always be there. The UFC should be using the competition as the selling point.

Mcgregor made himself a star. The UFC reap the reward but they have hundreds of fighters who arent stars or even well known. He made diaz a bigger name imo just by virtue of the fact he beat him. Diaz is now a commodity in mma and can now demand things he couldn't before.

Mcgregor is the outlier. But the bigger picture is that if a mcgregor ppv sells a million and all the rest sell <300,000 they should be trying to promote the fighters on those lesser selling cards. Something they arent really good at.

Why fans worry about purses and ppv points is weird to me.

To attract casual fans to buy a ppv minus mcgregor or rousey they need to promote other fighters.

most on here share similar sentiment, we'll watch the cards regardless, but the casual fan is still very important, for every ''mcgregor fan'' that tunes into a card to see mcgregor, a good number of those will watch the rest of the card, like what they see, and become ''mma fans''. thats why you need big stars with big followings to grow the sport.

I think a lot of the fault is on the individual fighters and not neceserily the ufc...one example is aldo, could have been a huge star, guy was a total beast in the cage but with that alone its not going to give you a connection with the fans, if aldo had learned to speak english and improved his skills on the mic he would have been a lot bigger than he is. too many guys still in that old school ''I do my talking with my fists'' mindset, happy to train hard, win fights and keep their mouth shut then they wonder why conor does the numbers he does. You cant just say ''ah McGregor's just an outlier, I can never be that popular!'' you have to think of a way to make yourself popular. Like it or not the sport has changed and in the modern game its not enough to just be able to walk the walk anymore, if you want the numbers you have to be able to talk the talk aswel

I dont disagree that fighters need to do it for themselves ( since mcgregor they seem to be seeing that themselves and try to, mousasi probably best of all) but they still need the push from the Ufc with regards to media exposure. Mcgregor could have done it without the UFC due to his charisma. Once he got a foot in the door it was only going one way

As for the numbers, to me and you.they are irrelevant, the fighters should be worrying about them. And i dont think mcgregor should keep his belt due to his numbers. He'd generate interest even if he gave up both belts and never had a title fight again.

While i agree casual fans watching a mcgregor ppv will probably watch the whole card and then watch the next one. Fighters need to give them a reason to watch, another personality to follow or a fighters career progression to be interested in. A mcgegor ppv is a spotlight on every fighter on the card. And the fighter nor the ufc look to capitalise on it

The only other person that could really be pushed as a huge star is Dominick Cruz. One of the best trash talkers in the game but combined with McGregor's more attractive soundbytes and the fact the Bantemweight division has no depth it's hard to invest in that.

Now if Cruz was to move up to featherweight, then it's the prime opportunity.

Absolutely a weird egg. But hes a great analyst which gives him exposure and can back up any smack talk with his fighting ability.

Oh he's a total oddball, but when it comes to press obligations with his opponent he's excellent at shutting them down. Him and McGregor at the same press conference (not necessarily for a match between them) where they're going back and forth with each other would be gold.
