He is regulary referenced as being the most skillful midfielder by his fellow players on that great Kilkenny team. Yet he didnt even play until his prime, he was ridiculously good yet he was gone before we saw the best of him. He should still be doing the business for Kilkenny for another few years.

Thats why i said he was hurler of the year material

I agree with everything you said apart from wasting his talent.7 years at senior still is a good spell lot of players don't get that. Yes he could have played longer but maybe he wanted something different to do. Not everything revolves around gaa

Good battling performance by Lismore yesterday to come out on top against a well organised Newport side. The battle between Dan and Conor O Mahony was intriguing,no inch given by either player but Dan got 2 vital points for his team when needed in either half. Their halfback line of Paudie Prendergast,Ray Barry and Eoin Bennett were outstanding and John Prendergast at midfield put in a huge shift as did Jack Prendergast at centre forward (This fella is one for the future). Seánie Barry made 2 great saves(and no brain farts on the dayðŸ˜) but in all honesty from a neutral point Newport will be kicking themselves having shot 16 wides throughout the game, will be scratching their heads wondering how they left if after them. Maurice was quite for long periods but then 1-08 was of vital importance to his side's win. Their squad seems to be very thin on the ground and if they're to go any further this could be their undoing. Great entertainment for €10 on a Sat afternoon.

No problem with a guy wanting to do something different but that = wasting his hurling ability. You cant say one without the other.

If Austin Gleeson was dropping off the team at 24/25 and was not play at all at 30 would yiu say he got the most out of himself? Of course you couldnt

Cha is still only 31 ffs

Do player of the year still get a car for winning?

Yes and an agent to count the greenbacks! He deserves all he gets and more. Any player that entertains and get you off your seat like he does deserves all he can get from it. He is box office and hopefully he doesn't get side tracked by all that goes with the award. A big year ahead for Waterford and he will be needed to be at his best again.

Some win for Ballyea today. Fair play to them they didn't stand back from Thurles and went at them especially their full back line which they knew was there for the taking, ending up with four goals. They even recovered from another terrible decision by Kirwan to gift Paudie Maher a goal in extra time to come back and win. Tony Kelly is some player.

Kirwan was right on that incident

Stop now, Maher has been at that clothes lining stuff for years. He had his hurley around Browne's neck for at least ten seconds impeding his progress. Even Pat Fleury doing the commentary was in shock that a free out wasn't allowed.

Kilmoyley of Kerry had a big win over Monaleen, they are the Kerry senior champions so no doubt will be a tough task for Lismore. I see Carrickshock won the intermediate in Kilkenny after being down intermediate for just one year. They have some serious players with the Power's, Tennynson, Michael Rice, John Dalton. Imagine they'll be favourites to win the AI.

I would have given a free in for steps. Brown played for the free.

True, I'd say Lismore will be seriously up against it but to be fair they're in bonus territory now anyway. The main aim I reckon for them would be to get back up senior. That western intermediate championship is a minefield made worse by Cappoquin being back down there next year.

God that's some list of serious players that Carrickshock can call upon at that level.

How Kirwan is still refereeing at this level is a mystery. He robbed Waterford in the league final this year. He rode Waterford in under 21 in 2012. Padraig Maher's arm around Browne's neck was a yellow card offence which should have meant a sending off as he had already been carded. Instead he was allowed to score the equalising goal. Fair dues to Ballyea for coming back to win. Like last week, Sarsfields faded in the closing stages of the regular game. They managed to survive last week but not this week. Ballygunner, in my view, threw away a Munster championship this year, but it wouldn't be the first time this has happened.

Don't know what match you were watching. Jack Browne caught the ball took about two steps before Maher clothes lines him. Brown then tries to spiral out of the foul to get free of Maher's hurley. Maher keeps the hurley around his neck and drags him to the ground.

At least a free out and a yellow for a high tackle.

Kirwan was a few feet away watching this. He's just a brutal ref full stop. How he's still getting games is beyond me. He also missed a filthy stroke on Lar Corbett just before the end of normal time that should have been another yellow.

Bang on about Ballyea, Maher and Kirwan. Kirwan is a clown, always has to be the centre of attention. Throw in all the instances above with the penalty award for Kilkenny in the 2009 All Ireland final. How many games has he now reffed where he has been the talking point rather than the game?

On last week, Ballygunner never even tested the Thurles full back line or worked their goalkeeper. TBF Thurles deserved their victory last week. It wasn't their fault that Ballygunner played constipated hurling against them.

Maher put his Hurley up to stop him.his Hurley was low, jack Browne ducked under it looking for a free. There was no clothes line that you talk about and how do you justify a yellow card?

Kirwan gave a free to Thurles in the last couple of minutes of the game when he penalised Cathal Doohan for handling the ball 3 times when he didn't commit that offence and Doohan himself should have been awarded the free. Yet neither commentator nor his learned co-commentator referred to the incident.

Is this a Waterford GAA discussion thread, a Ballyea/Thurles thread or a referees discussion thread? Or does it know what it is?

Hi all. Wondering does anyone the current situation with the u21 championship up west? This Saturday down east is Mount Sion vs Erin's Own/Ferrybank at 1.15, followed by the second semi final Ballygunner vs De La Salle.
Always hard on the under 21 players this time of year with the conditions, but always an enjoyable championship none the less.

Yes. The Nire played there best football yesterday. Conor Gleeson a joy to watch. Liam Lawlor , Darren Guiry and Dylan Guiry midfield impressed also. Ballinacourty not helped with Richie foley been sent off after 22 minutes. Tom o Gorman held Gary hurney scoreless and done the same to Paul White last week.

Browne 100% played for the free. Held onto Mahers arm after ducking into the tackle to try and engineer a free out. Dragged Maher down to the ground as he still held his arm as he flung himself to the ground to win a free. People here correctly praised the referee in the Ballygunner Thurles game for pulling Brian O'Sullivan up on a similar incident as well as in the county final. Nothing different here other than that it's unusual to see a defender try it and he was badly caught out.
    Good call from the referee!

I was delighted to see him not get a free. Maher was clearly trying to get the hurley away and Browne was holding it in.

No word yet but I see the rubbish being spouted about the other guy going for the Laois job as his reason for resigning from the job was blown out of the water today.

    No surprise there.

    Now now lol.

Seriously though, the HDC are heavily involved in targeting Offaly and Laois for development so any appointment would be closely monitored.

What exactly is the reason for his exit?
