Not sure but someone may be interested in today's Daily Telegraph report

Pity they're not so proactive on the Runway situation, which has been delayed another year today.

A decision next week on who get the extra runway by a sub committee and MP's to vote on it next year. The problem the government here have is that there are very powerful and influential MP's in constituencies around Heathrow. One in Richmond, Zac Goldsmith, has threatened to resign if the third runway gets the okay at Heathrow.

Theresa May's constituency is Maidenhead so maybe some very angry locals form the added noise

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,922 ✭✭✭✭Jamie2k9

Heathrow runway will go ahead but vote likely delayed more then one year. May does not need full support of her party to get it passed however if MPs resign the vote will be pushed back more to ensure no election is called.

    Some good news for Cork.

Cork Airport is flying high after today’s announcement that the Icelandic low cost operator WOW air, a new airline to the region, is to commence a new Cork – Reykjavik service next year.
The new service with WOW will start from May 19, 2017. The airline will operate four convenient weekly flights on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday during the Summer 2017 season and will operate three weekly services during Winter 2017. The new service to the land of fire and ice will see an additional 66,000 seats available from Cork Airport next year.

Great route for Cork, hope it goes well.

Yes, hopefully I can get my O/H to use it for her annual visit to NYC, any thing to avoid that boreen to SNN. If this country was run properly a dual carriageway would make all the difference.

Local media talking about the transatlantic connections with WOW. With (some) short connection times, could this be the end of the proposed Norwegian flight.

Can I risk the wrath of Boardsies and ask will there be a demand for

    1. Icelandic short breaks etc..... I heard its ridiculously expensive there for a break from an Irish point of view

    2. using Iceland as a access point for the USA out of the Munster region - is there that much of a demand to sit for 2-3 hrs in Reykivick on a a.c change

Is there 'experience' more of a student experience with all frills taken out????

    ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,712 ✭✭✭roundymac

Well it's better/shorter than sitting for 3;5 hours on an Aircoach IMO.

An ambitious announcement for sure. Can't help but feel they've given up on Norwegian now

Not 100% sure about the demand for Iceland but I believe it has become quite popular in recent times to visit.

With a changeover in Iceland do you actually have to physically get up from one plane and move to another? How delayed would you be so so speak as opposed to flying directly?

We would normally leave the house at 07;00/07;15, drive to SNN for the E111, depart 12;20, land JFK 14;45 EST. Return would be departing at 18;30 back in Cork anytime between 08;30/09;30.
With WOW I could leave the house at 10;15, be at the airport for 10.30 for an 11;45 departure. With a 2 hour layover in Iceland should be in JFK 17;50EST. Return gets me into Cork for 10;30.

Yes you change aircraft - Reykjavik is a hub airport for WOW.

Obviously you would also proceed through customs and immigration at the US airport rather than in Ireland.

Ummmmm....Seems about the same really if I am reading that correctly....Would certainly be more favourable than Dublin though....

Would an A320 have the legs to get from Iceland to New York or would this require a bigger plane, therefore a change of plane from the one from Cork?

Think you change onto an A330 in KEF, if not an A321.

I hope she likes going to New York with hand luggage only ! As hold luggage is pricy with Wow! May indeed be cheaper to go direct from SNN

Great coup for Cork - the Dub route must be doing well so will be interested in seeing how this goes. Will it be mainly people going to Iceland or the US I wonder.

Icelandair definitely used to offer to option on all USA-Europe bookings. Change your booking to include a stopover in Iceland "at no extra cost".

It was a great way to get passengers to stop and spend a some time and money in the local economy.

I know a mate who pitched a similar idea at the EI CEO in 2012 as part of their developing hub strategy but it didnt get any traction. (The CEOs link with Tourism Ireland was seen as an way to generate revenue for the airline)

Iceland is one of those few places with summer and winter appeal, I hope its not just a seasonal route.

Summer = good enough weather, glaciers, volcanos, etc etc
    Winter = Aurora.

IN that case it will be something like 30euro for standard hand luggage (yes, thats right they charge for hand luggage) and 40+ for hold luggage
