    ????? Jaysus!!!
Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. When my Dad died we buried him with some items like a book, alarm clock, his old phone and a map of the townland where he farmed. Partly to lighten the mood to be honest, it's the kind of thing that amuses some people.

I still have his number and have archived our whatsapp. I don't message it, but I'm sure a lot of people do, and it would be unpleasant if it landed on someone's new sim card.

Having said all that, I think there's nothing that can be done. But maybe they could leave it a bit longer before regenerating numbers. i don't understand the rush. There are just under 10 million sequences available to each network operator. I'm sure a three-year wait is possible.

What about people who go travelling for a year? In their case, I'd be worried about things like internet banking and other security issues (didn't listen to all the show, don't know if that was mentioned).

    .

It's not as straightforward as 10 million numbers.

Most operators drop the 0 as the first number, so you might not get 082 0123456

Also they prefer to have easy-remember numbers, so they prefer to issue 082 3312445 rather than 082 6397214. There's an algorithm that works this out, but most easy remember ones are gone now.

They also try to avoid issuing sequential numbers unless requested by a company and they reserve other numbers for businesses such as 082 1002000.

So in reality I think they've a lot less.

Along with this, with the advent of SIM only numbers for a few quid, numbers are being used up much quicker. I've been back in Ireland about 10 years and along with my private number and work number, I've had about 7 or 8 numbers that I used for a few days if selling a car, after that I just throw them away.

My work number was a special order and cost about €100 at the time, but was well worth it. It had been on reserve for several years before that but nobody wanted it.

Well I've had a number beginning with 0, it does happen. I did say 'just under' ten million to take account of sequences and things like 0000001.

Even if you brought it down to 8 million numbers, that's 24 million numbers across three operators. I doubt there are 24 million sim cards dished out in Ireland over a three-year period. That's approximately equivalent to every man, woman and child getting a new sim card twice a year.

As it happens, I also think it's far too easy to get a sim card here. No registration, no ID required, unlike many other countries. Criminals thrive on that.

So long as I have credit it should be ok>?

    I have about €3 on it ...

maybe ill switch it on once every 6 months..

You have to make a chargeable call or text from it to keep it alive. Wang a few quid in it just to make sure and use it every four months.

Don't bank on it - if there's a need for numbers, they'll kill your account off if it's not used.

    Can they not just add
    084
    083
    082

    etc... ?

083 is used by 3 for their modem SIMs, that I know. Not sure about the others, but there is a numbering allocation in place.

most networks insist you top up by at least €10 every 5-6months or they first restrict outgoing calls then take credit and block incoming calls before finally taking back the number.

some 3 and older o2 numbers were like "golden" sims and only need a chargeable call every 6 months to keep the sim active.

It's two of the older O2 SIMs I have, so that explains that.
I was able to shuffle credit around between them and ended up with it balanced out over the two of them. They're never used, only fall-back phones, and if I did use them, they'd gobble money at the rate of 50c/min, so they get left alone, just a text message from them every few months to keep them alive.
If I had to top them up, and enough time passed, I'd look at transferring the excess credit to another O2 (or perhaps 3) number as an option.

Just finished reading the thread so to speak; looks like I missed yet another riveting show about death and incredibly insensitive and inappropriate questions and dat so to speak. Mind you he did say in his ghost-written Weekly Column dat he wood be makin' up for de abscence of de death & misery and dat recently by over-dosing on de death & misery dis week so to speak, so yisser can't say ye weren't warned so to speak............

A few years agoJoe interviewed Tiede Herrema, the Dutch businessman who the IRA kidnapped back in the 70's. There were two car crash moments for Joe....

Joe: And when you were held hostage Tiede, did you pray, did the praying help you Tiede.
    Tiede: No Joe
Joe: Why not Tiede? Surely it would have helped you.
    Tiede: I'm an atheist Joe.
    Joe: *silence

Joe: So these IRA thugs, Tiede, do you still have anger towards them, what would you say to them if, God forbid, you ever met them.
Tiede: But I have met them since Joe.
    Joe: You Have!!!!
Tiede: Yes, I met them several times in prison.
Joe: And what did you say to them?
    Tiede: I forgave them Joe
    Joe: YOU DID WHAT???
    Tiede: I forgave them.
    Joe: *silence

What struck me was how the atheist forgave them, but Joe the Christian couldn't understand that.

    :pac: Love it.

Reminds me of that Bill Hicks joke where he talks about three rednecks who met him after a show where he made a joke about Christians.

Christians: Hey buddy, we're Christians, we don't like what you said.
    Bill: Then forgive me.

I suspect their reaction (and IQ) was similar to Joe's.

Much like the irony of posters on the thread continuing to listen to the show, perhaps.

The thread amuses me in the same way that the show does.

not really irony, Alanis. The thread is for good and bad commentary, if it was a fans thread for praise only then yes that would be irony...don't you think?

I think (just my opinion, I'm not speaking for the collective thread here) that the majority do it for the sheer entertainment value of the "show + thread" combo, and to laugh at the idiocy of the host, and occasionally the callers. You can listen to the show and disparage it on the thread - that's criticism, not irony. To criticize the show without listening to it (which ironically is a Lahv Lahn truism) would be hypocritical, not ironic. I can't imagine anyone on the thread listens to Joe Duffy as a fan of the man's work, impartiality, professionalism, journalistic integrity etc.

You've passed a number of disparaging comments recently on the thread and the posters yet continue to visit. If you dislike it so much, why bother? If you're entertained by it, that's fine; but if you're entertained by what you describe as "nonsense" then surely the joke is on you?
