Kimmage on TodayFM now. He must have had a row with OTB, or just liked the regular slot that TodayFM gave him. He's also good pals with Cascarino so that may have helped convince him. Can stomach Cascarino tbh.

OTB surely should have offered him something. I wonder were they afraid to have him on after the recent article about Rob Heffernan and similar articles.

Surely his slot with The Last Word won't prevent him from appearing on the OTB paper review every now and then? Wouldn't be the same without him

manchester derby was analysed piece by piece again last night. that's even though they did it on saturday straight after the match, and again on sunday.
they'll do it again with johnny giles on thursday. does it really need all this analysis? it's a pain in the hole.

The Steve Nicol interview was great, very interesting. Especially the stuff in relation to Hillsborough

I've noticed, less if late now, but they seem to be swapping presenting duties, Ger and Joe are the main two but it seems the others are stepping in alot to cover. Then they have Joe on Sundays and Ger on Saturdays. Now, maybe it works for them to share duties like that but personally I prefer Joe presenting and think the show would be better resulted with just one actual presenter, then Kilbane or whoever and Cian reading sports headlines , least for the first half an hour, then into interviews.

Yeah, tonight Joe and Ger were both on but it's hard to know who is actually presenting. Sometimes there's only two in studio, other times there's 4 or 5. Guess it's awkward when some of the rpesenters are on commentating duty too. Dave or Nathan have hardly been on it recently.

Spot on. I think the show needs a bit of consistency/continuity which it looses by constantly rotating the main presenter/anchor. My preference would actually be Richie as main presenter!

I think Joe does a good job as main presenter even if he can be too PC at times, when he was on his holidays it reinforced to me how good he was when we had Nathan as the main presenter.

Joe is an excellent moderator, the best OTB have in my opinion. He's not quite at the level of McDevitt yet but he's not far off. They are both polished and it's clear they've done their research ahead of interviews. Where McDevitt has the edge is that he will readily challenge the interviewee, whereas Joe is a bit more reverential.

As for Nathan Murphy he is a good commentator, but his pitch is completely wrong for presenting, way too high and grating.

How is ger gilroy allowed use interviews as a soapbox for his own long winded opinions?
Every question is firstly a piece of analysis or a long winded opinion of his.

Keep the questions snappy, shut up and let the experts do the bulk of the talking ffs.

I think Joe and Eoin try not to take themselves too seriously, being a good presenter isn't just about the interviewing, to be honest I care more about the stuff around that, I can imagine how structured some of those interviews are and how much prep is gone into them so you'd expect a certain string of questioning and answers, while the off the cuff stuff makes the presenter more likable in my opinion. I like the way Nathan will make fun of himself, while I think Dave McIntyre gets more wound up when people try to slag him and he comes across as an arse even though hes fine when doing commentary.

Is anybody listening to this. David Brady has said tried to say the word categorically about four times and keeps saying "caregotcially". Nathan is out the back and you can hear him screaming laughing at him, presumably AT Brady.

Yeah. I was laughing away here. I wouldn't blame him. He knows there isn't any reason he could expect Mayo to win but he just wants them to so much. I'd say he hasn't slept in the last week and he's not even involved with the team.

I agree about Hunter. I find him so boring. Yes, he is knowledgeable about Spanish football but he always takes himself so seriously. Lacks any charm, personality or humour, I feel.

Why is he always the quizmaster as well. It this just so that he can make fun of the subordinates. I dont think I've ever heard him being one of the contestants of the quiz.

Was listening to him talk about the Barca/Celtic game last week, he has great knowledge of pretty much every aspect of Spanish football and always has some "insider" information or personal stories about certain players etc but it's the way he articulates himself, just makes himself sound like he is the dog's bollocks.

He was talking about how Spanish media were following Celtic in the build up to the Barca game and how they were going over to Glasgow to follow the team for a few days, then he said "and I know because I put them in touch with John Harston (and some other player)" loves to namedrop and self promote, which is really annoying.

Feel I have to stand up for poor old Graham. He's not very popular here. :(

I enjoy him, dare I say it, I prefer him to Andy Mitten who I find is too one club centric and Pat Nevin who's happy go lucky attitude just isn't my cup of tea.
I think both of those name drop just as much.

Continuing with the defense of Graham; although he is irritating at times, there are far worse than him out there, i.e. Guillem Balague. Probably not his fault but, the manner in which Sky promote him, you would swear no other English-speaking journalist knows anything about Spanish football.

I enjoy him too for the most part, just aspects of him that annoy me. I'm not really into Spanish football but I do enjoy his stories about individual players/managers and his knowledge of the Spanish game is very impressive.

I rarely listen to the show any more since Wooly left. Not because I only tuned in for him, but because he brought a bit of levity to the show, especially the first half hour. It's has become incredibly boring, especially if you have no interest in soccer.

I still listen to the show on a regular basis, but agree 100% with what you said. The show really needs an injection of character and variety - entertainment which, despite all his faults, Wooly provided. I've said it here before, Kilbane is not suitable as a direct replacement; too polite, not enough knowledge of other sports (namely GAA), and would be much better suited as a guest pundit/regular contributor (actually really like him as a pundit). I think someone like Mossy Quinn might have been a better replacement, he's a good GAA analyst, although not as colourful a character as Wooly.

I'd have to agree, although I'd imagine we may be in the minority on the soccer aspect. I have no interest at all and I could never understand why they have a dedicated hour to it but yet it still appears in the other hour and a half (I understand it being in the news section). I only listen to podcasts now and I find that soccer still finds its way into them when they are supposed to be rugby, gaa etc.

Kilbane strikes me as a very nice guy but he's fairly limited as regards other sports. He also offers none of the colour Parkinson did. This seems to have led to some of the others trying to be funny which hasn't worked. I don't think Mossy Quinn was the answer either.

Really enjoyed the Ross Tucker piece last night, he comes across so well could listen to him for hours. I know some feel Newstalk go overboard with doping coverage but I really enjoy it and love that they do. I'd always felt all TUEs should be published openly but he made a good case for some 'real' medical cases where they should be entitled to privacy.
Shocked at the stat that 45% of british swimming team have asthma, would love to see comparable figures for other nations like he suggested.
Always leaves me with food for thought, although slightly sad as it really is like pissing against the wind in this battle sadly.

I enjoyed that also last night. Think Joe hosting the interview helped make it so good. Joe's streets ahead in interviewing skills in my view.

Yep I totally agree. It's always worth listening when Ross Tucker is on the show.

Good news.. Kimmage is on the paper review at noon. I thought that he was gone from NT because he had agreed to feature on Matt Cooper's show every Monday evening. But it seems that he's still doing both.

However, I fear he may end up having a similar conversation with Matt Cooper that he had with Brian O'Driscoll.

    What was it about?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,869 ✭✭✭PeterTheNinth

    What was it about?

O'Driscoll agreed to give an interview to another newspaper (ahead of one of the bigger games), while Kimmage was writing his book. Kimmage asked him would he give HIM the interview istead. He said no, so Kimmage downed tools on the book. Then O'Driscoll got somebody else to finish the book.

That's a brief but you find the full story online.

Great stuff from Kimmage. Always so direct. Surprised that David Walsh hasnt rung in or at least responded on the twitter machine.

Wonderful radio. I was looking forward to it all morning and haven't been disappointed.
