I get the feeling that OTB want us all to start calling Kilbane "Killer".

he's been called that for years

Yeah, but he's not that insightful or articulate. I think Daniel McDonnell has got a raw deal here. He was very much part of keeping the show together when the others left. Did a good job on the football show for 3 years and was then unceremoniously dumped. He should of been kept on. Kilbane is more suited to a weekly slot.

    Agree 100% with this.

I thought it was mostly mentioned by texters. They asked him about the nickname one of the first nights he was on and he said something about his older brother having the same nickname.

I've mostly enjoyed his addition so far. A decent get considering most expectations beforehand.

I think, as I mentioned already, I want him to provide an insight that the current OTB crew simply don't (and given their background will never) have. I listen to the frequently superficial analysis given by ex-pros who, as far as I can tell, may have experienced the game and played at the highest level, but never actually thought about it either while they were playing or after they were finished.

I've listened a few times over the last few weeks and I find he is usually drawing from his own experiences from playing and life as a footballer, he was talking about transfers the other day and how he was transferred and he was talking about his debut for Ireland and when Robbie came into the fold etc... Maybe I picked you up wrong but I find hes providing insight so i don't see the problem?

Agree with you. I found the transfer discussion very informative from a players point of view. Particularly when they had the Irish agent on discussing it with him. Perhaps it has a short shelf life but it seems like he has encountered a lot in his 20 years playing and can add a lot more to the discussion than people who last played in the 70s.

Agree about Ritchie McCormack. He has a pleasant voiceover voice that just seems to sit nicely in the background. He just asks the question, then gets out of the way and let's the guest respond. For Ger Gilroy it seems more important to him that the audience recognise how clever his question is, and everything else is just secondary.

Joe Molloy irritates me occasionally but seems a much nicer character than Gilroy. An example is the recent vicar Street premier league show with JM presenting and last night with Gilroy at Electric Picnic. He is such a tool. I lasted about 20 mins.

there's fewer slots more painful than Ger and Graham Hunter chatting to each other on Thursdays. it's one of the most irritating circlejerks on the radio at the moment, both complimenting each other on the question and the answer.

Ah, I think that is a lot to do with Graham Hunter. He has a bad attitude, is always in bad form, and is a know it all. At least Pat Nevin has a laugh and a joke. God knows I hardly ever understand what Pat Nevin is saying, but at least he says it with a smile.

Kevin Kilbane's finest moment on OTB, so far, was pulling Hunter up for name dropping last Thursday night.

Yeah it was great. And then Gilroy kills it stone then with his self indulgent questions to the Lightning Seeds guy.

Was just about to post this. He's talking about ****ing politics again!!!!

What a prat he is. Needs to go back to current affairs as sport is clearly below him.

I think it's fair enough to have an interview with the guy who wrote on of the best ever football songs.

The Life Of Reilly, I mean of course.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 86 ✭✭Rambling Rake

No problem with the interview just his questions. "Not to labour the point" as he continually does so whilst everybody listening can tell Brody doesn't want to talk about it.

Pretty much exactly what he did with Desailly a few months ago.

His son Riley is now in the band! The song is now 24 years old!

Two of the most verbose characters on national radio anywhere on the planet. Let alone Ireland.

Cannot agree with this. I find Graham Hunter very informed and has solid engaging topics which he either writes or speaks about. He watches a lot of football and gets very close to top footballers in Spain and does then speak about their views without necessarily making it sound like they just back up his argument.

If you watch the Sunday Supplement on Sky, you'll see a lot of "top" football writers are more interested in convincing you that their opinion is both unique and the correct one.

P.S. I would nearly sponsor the phone call to Tim Vickery. The poor quality and dropped sentences on those Skype calls do my head in. And every time it happens it's like they're surprised. It was the same thing last week lads, and the week before. :(

    F*ckin technical issues. Again.

They need to hire a few engineers.

Is this just a loop of ads while they try to fix technical issues? :/

Re: Graham Hunter - I listen to a significant amount of podcasts and live radio every week (possibly 30+ hours thanks to a fairly long commute and a boring job in financial services).

I often end up listening to topics and people that I may not necessarily like just to pass the time....Graham Hunter is THE only feature that I fast forward through and/or delete.

Great stuff from Daithi Regan here.

edit: Jaysus I think he might be after getting himself in trouble now though.

A bit of the Roy Keane about him.I'm sure back in the day of Christy Ring and those boys most of the players had Daithi's attitude.Remember seeing an interview once with former Tipp hurler,Mickey 'the rattler' Byrne. It sounded like it was a real bloodsport back then.

Haha that sounds appropriate. No need for any croke park despute resolutions committee,in the rattlers day.

No dispute that he knows a lot and has a lot of contacts, but Graham Hunter is an unctuous pain in the arse.

I'm obviously in the minority on this one.

No, Ger Gilroy certainly agrees with you :p

Really enjoyed the stuff with Regan yesterday though. That's the best pre-match build up I've heard in a while. You cant beat having one of the players actually "taking you there".

A few months back Nathan Murphy and Ger Gilroy were talking about a guest they had on one of the road shows, they said he used to play for Liverpool and they said before he went on air, he demanded a big bar of chocolate and he scoffed the lot, was meant to be quite rude to the lads but once he was on air, he was full of life. They purposely didn't mention who it was but the only person I can think of it being would be Robbie Fowler (they mentioned the person was quite large). Any ideas who it was?

I assumed they were talking about Fowler too.
