Can anyone help me out with the auto braking with front facing radar. Does that only work if ACC is on? In my car it doesn't seem to warn me about a car ahead braking at all, I've tried braking late enough a couple of times to see if it warns me or kicks in, but nothing, the radar works fine when I'm in cruise control though, thanks,

Most times it came on for me was when there was a car indicating to turn off the road. I knew they were almost about to turn but the car didn't and could just see me closing in fast on a rear bumper. It beeps and red warning flashes up. Driving just close to abother car probably wouldon't cut it.

Haven't tried the VW system but done demo's on a couple of Fords and the auto braking kicks in at a brown trouserly late stage. Far, far later than any half sensible human would leave braking until.

If you find out it works, you've done something wrong.

When I got my car first I was also convinced it wasn't working. So I did the same as Kagawa, drove up behind a few cars quickly to see if I could trigger it. Nothing.

Then when I least expected it, it triggered like that, when a guy was turning left in front of me. It's done it a few times since. Usually at what I'd consider a reasonable distance away and next thing "Boooonnnng!" and the big red triangle on the dash... bit of a brown trousers moment the first time I saw it!

Another time I got it recently was on a leisurely Sunday drive and I kept coming up on cyclists on a relatively narrow road... the radar kept thinking I was going to run into one of them.

So in other words, I'd have little doubt yours is working Kagawa, if it's working for the cruise control I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh, another thing to keep an eye on... if the car thinks you're tailgating dangerously, i.e. riding someone's bumper BMW 320d-driver-style, then a small tailgate warning will appear where the total kms usually is. It's like 2 cars with an exclamation mark between them.

Car went in for first service yesterday. I was informed that they would undertake two software updates and a check on the child locks on top of the oil service.

The two campaigns on the Mk7 at the minute are for intermitted stalling/ crashing of the multimedia unit, the other is for the possibility of the rear doors not locking when you use the lock button on the drivers door.

Auto braking does work even when active cruise is off. Auto braking can be de-activated in the vehicle menu though, so make sure yours isn't turned off.

Also worth noting that the auto brake system isn't designed to prevent a collision, it's simply to reduce the energy in the collision, or as VW say in the manual - 'reduce the consequences' in a collision!

If it activates, you're probably about to have an accident, definitely not a good idea to see if the system works!:D

It does work well alright but I'll say it again, I'm not too impressed with the xenon lights compared to other cars I've had.

Yeah I think its great. Some find that it's a bit too slow to dip the main beam but I haven't found that. That said, I tried it on the motorway a few times and that didn't work too well, I had a few trucks flash me. So it's best suited to single carriageway roads.

You will find with high beam "assist" on most cars will do just that..."assist". It's great if you forget to dip and in a lot of situations, but on the motorway with the truckers sitting up high you need to manually dip and also on country roads when you can see a car approaching the bend dip as a courtesy before the cars sensor can detect oncoming.

Which the R does not have ;)

Besides, fogs shouldn't be used unless it's very foggy but that's a controversial subject...

Quit calling em fog lights. Der spots and der sporty.

Ha, I know, I only turned them on when there was nobody else on the road, but damn the light from LED headlights must be something else

Apparently not. The Seat Leon has LED headlights and from what I've heard, the light output is no better than xenon.

Interesting, wonder what the light from the GTE is like, they have LED headlights,

Could you let me know if there is anything "essential" missing from the spec in this R, please?

define essential ? personally it would have to have leather/dsg/heated seats on top of its current spec to interest me.

I guess essential is subjective - I have leather on my GTD so wouldn't necessarily miss them. I'm in two minds re DSG. Anything else?

If I get offered a very good deal I will seriously think about it. The level of trade in I'm offered for 2nd hand GTis is very low (in my view) so I will see what they say about this as it appears competitively priced.

Thanks a mill for your comment :)

I love DSG and I really can't see myself ever driving manual again in my daily car. Also the leather would be a personal requirement for me with having kids, as its so easy to keep clean etc and just adds a nice bit of prestige to the car with its natural sound deadening.

I see it comes with the sunroof - which I find is a lovely option to have. I also really like the color of that one.

I'm actually replacing a GTI soon too, we're keeping Mk7 though and instead going to shift the Mk5 for something like an LR3 HSE or X5 as we need extra space and will have occasional use for the 7 seats.

So mine was bought for 40k, 151

The trade in offer is €28,995 meaning a cost to change of €7000.

Obviously I will lose the 1.9% APR

    What do ye think?

remind me again the spec of your own ? my initial gut instinct would be a no however if the car in question was dsg/leather etc and the cost to change was 7k I would be tempted. But are you getting 7k more car though ? the 4WD is the only part about the R that interests me, the 300bhp etc can be easily achievable with the GTI and certainly for less than 7k.

Pretty sure that car is quite a bit "older" than 152. It's been on Carzone for a long time. It has the MIB 1 radio (smaller screen, etc). It looks like it's "base" spec + sunroof, not that there's anything wrong with base spec, as the car is well spec'd as standard. That said, for me personally, it has the wrong gearbox, wrong seats and wrong wheels.

Also, the dealer clearly can't be arsed advertising it properly. Half assed copy and paste effort - " Front Fog Lights, Metallic Paint" - it has neither of these.

    cheers folks.

my own one is spec'd out with 19 alloys, sport and sound pack, winter pack, tech pack, keyless entry, keyless start etc.

I was told it would be 5k to change into a less spec'd GTI at 151 level btw!

my car is being valued at 12k less than purchase price, with the R going for 15k less than purchase price.. I think :)

this is the spreadsheet - by my reckoning if I add 5k it would work the trade in value to be as listed. my repayments are 400 a month as is...
