Are you sure the dipped beams are coming on and it's not just the dashboard illumination (which comes on/off independently).?

Yeah, I can see them in the car in front of me,

cheers lads. I'm in Drogheda/Swords - any idea where I could pick them up tomorrow?

Was a fast fit I got mine in (wish I hadn't as they damaged a wheel), they seemed to have access to stock. Anything decent can take a day or two to come in with most tyre places though.

you would have saved around 40/50 euro a corner buying online.

I have the 2's and 3's on my car. When it comes to replacing the 2's i'll be buying 2's again. The rim protector on the 3's is crap.

As a matter of interest what's the average discount you can get from list price ( ex 50k list) when you buy straight without trade in these days?

same price, and then I would have to have the fitted costs..

    I like this guys reviews
He's honest and doesn't just say it's all great like our Irish guys who seem scared to criticise.

Is that power thing legit ? Surely that's unlockable ? It's basically a time locked remap.

It looks well, those extra touches, the seats and the steering wheel on the R and it would be perfect.

Yeah, legit. 290 bhp but only for 10 seconds. Then you need to wait another 10 seconds to use it again - or something! Whether it's "unlockable", I haven't heard or read if that's possible but I'd imagine in time, when the tuners figure it out, it could well be - at your own risk, re warranty and so on.

Some of the visual touches look great alright - the steering wheel, seats, front bumper (the standard GTI bumper is a bit tame). Not sure about the rear spoiler, it's a bit "shopping trolley handle". Or those wheels, they are gash! But the R's pretorias are an option too.

Yeah the spoiler and wheels do nothing for me, the standard R wheels are the same for me.

The overboost function is similar in the Fiesta ST. It gives 15 bhp extra for 15 seconds and then when you release throttle and accelerate again you get full boost again. Afaik once remapped you get the full benefit of the extra boost all the time.

I might get shot for saying this, but I watched that review and thought if a ClubSport was tickling your bits, maybe a Civic Type R would be a better choice for tickling them. I think if I wanted what the Clubsport was trying to create I would lean towards the Civic. The spoilers and seats, bit more 'out there' styling, fwd and more focused drive. I think the Civic does a better job, regardless of the drove through the bargain bin at Halfords comments, as that's where that clubsport is heading in my eyes.

I agree that it's going too much boy racer spoilers and skirts for me anyway. But I think if this appeals then may as well go for focus rs( or am I not allowed mention that car) as a better all rounder.
Part of the fast golf appeal to me is the stealth approach and tasteful looks which this doesn't have.

The Clubsport is still relatively understated looking (barring perhaps the rear spoiler) imo. Pick a sombre colour (Black, Carbon grey) and it'll look low-key enough.

I'm not sure I'd compare the Clubsport looks to the Type R. Driving wise though, maybe although I would say the Civic is even more track focused feeling even with the Clubsport going for that itself.

The Clubsport still looks like a Golf at the end of the day, it's not exactly an out there shape to begin with, so attaching a few more aggressive looking bits doesn't do too much to it overall. I agree the spoiler added doesn't look too hot though but even from the angle in the pic above you can't actually see it. Compare that to the Civic and well... no. :)

Yes I agree with that. My thinking being that if you are going for the "track focused" FWD Golf then then Civic as a rival would seem to do that "focused" part better, albeit with dubious styling. But for the track focused customer, styling may be less of an issue, and it's personal preference, eye of the beholder stuff too. If you want the understated fast hatchback, buy an R. I'm just not sure I get the ClubSport or where it fits.

Let's be honest, it's a nice way for VW to bridge the gap between the GTI and the R, introduce a "facelift" of sorts to the GTI and more than likely a way for the R&D/design department to justify their existence. I'm only surprised that it still saw the light of day after the last year or so of happenings. Only that also makes sense as it would have been more damaging had they canned it altogether as it would have sent out the wrong message entirely.

I've not actually looked into the details of pricing much, but is it only here that it really hits on the "why buy that when you could buy an R for a small bit more?", or is it nearly on parity in most other regions also? It would make sense if they managed to offer it like Toyota do with the GT86 track edition, which is completely stripped back and actually cheaper than the standard road going version.

The Golf pictured above is the Clubsport S not the Clubsport 40th edition. The Clubsport S holds the Nurburgring record for a fwd car beating the Civic Type Rs previous record by 1.4 seconds. Just 400 of the Clubsport S have been made available worldwide. One of the standard Clubsports has just arrived in Cork today the first one in Ireland, shall be going to see it in the morning.

There's only €500 between the CS and an R here. Similar difference in the UK and probably most other markets.

So does the club sport s have any more power than regular club sport?
Is it just same as clubsport but with no rear seats, sticky tyres i.e. more track focussed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32 douglaslad

Clubsport S is the most powerful Golf available at 306 Bhp, Clubsport 40th edition has 261 bhp and 287 bhp with boost function.

Given that the bi-Xeon lights aren't great, has anyone upgraded the xenon bulbs, is it easy to do and worth the effort and price? Thanks is advance,

It's not too easy to do, the front bumper has to come off and then each light needs to be removed to get access to replace the bulbs.

I'd like to do it myself but haven't got round to doing it.

Thanks, that's too much to bother for me, pity though, just looked up the price of Philips Xenon X-treme Vision D3S, and its nearly 200 for the set.

I put a set of them on my Passat bi xenon, There is a difference but i don't think they are worth the extra cash difference, difference is small. They do give a slightly nicer crisper colour that matches to the colour of the daylight LED's. Also i noticed since fitting them i sometimes get cars flashing me so i gather they are more dazzly.

Does anyone else think that VW Ireland dropping the performance pack model from its line up was a bad idea considering it accounted for over 60% of GTI sold.

They're most likely tooling up the factories for the new model, have stock piles of them in other countries where the sales are significant to them to keep those punters happy.
