Unless they have Ronda or Jon Jones up their sleeves surely the UFC have to concede to Conor? Who else is worthy of headlining the first NY card?

Conor could fight in a cowshed on the Isle of Man and the PPV would do 1.5million.

Aldo is currently a title holder. So any other fight he has at 145 will be a title fight. Regardless of whether Conor is striped of his title.

Aldo fighting someone else for the interim title again while Conor keeps his belt would be daft. Can't see that happening.

Has something like that happened before?

The interim title holder defending his interim belt?

I suppose there's a good argument for saying Aldo would be mad to fight anyone else rather than wait for McGregor, even if Conor fights Alvarez next, as where Aldo to lose, he'd then be lessening his chances of getting the rematch.... and that's one heck of a big pay day (with ppv cut) to risk losing.

What was the story there do you know? Was the current champ injured?

Jones will likely defend his interim belt if he comes back but different circumstances

Pretty sure Renan Barao defended the interim belt a few times before Cruz was stripped of it.

I think there was an interim defence during the Couture contract saga.

The UFC wouldn't strip Couture because if they did then the "champion clause" wouldn't be in effect and he could leave to go fight Fedor.

Conor Simply has to defend his belt next or give it up. When have you ever seen an active champion go three fights without a defence

when was the last time an active champion headlined a card with 1.65 million ppv buys? dont see what difference it makes tbh, either conor fights aldo in the unification fight now or he fights him after eddie, same fight wether conor is stripped or not, aldo fighting to try get the belt back that he lost off conor.

I find it very odd that, if it's such a piece of cake to get it overturned, there's been literally no mention of Conor's medical suspension since it was announced. I thought Kavanagh had been saying that they'd have it overturned the week after 202?

That is a silly argument. If the ufc let him fight again without defending they are saying the belts are pointless

We had this same debate when Diaz 2 was announced. I honestly can't see how anyone can debate against Conor defending his title next or relinquishing it. If he doesn't defend next, it would mean three consecutive fights without a title defense. Screw ppvs. Screw "aldo only defended x times in x years". He should defend or drop the belt.

I think personally putting a belt on aldo before he beats conor is more damaging to the legitimacy of the 145 belt than conor fighting alvarez first

I reckon they should strip Conor of the 145 belt (if he doesn't defend it before fighting at 155) and have Aldo v Holloway matched up before the end of the year for the undisputed 145 title. McGregor then faces the winner of that fight in the first half of 2017.

At the end of the day if Conor vacated that division permanently that would sound the death knell for that division,so they need to keep him around because even not fighting the division has a lot more life in it.

aye, sad to say it but if conor leaves 145 completely it goes back to being a fox card title fight

Not if he drops it and plans on coming back for it. Even if he never goes back down they can link his name to keep it relevant

I suppose that might have a small effect for the first/maybe second title fight but after that any ppv headlined by aldo does at most <300k buys if theyre lucky

If they take this route and Conor beats Jose/Max it makes the entire division look like a joke imo, especially on the off chance he loses at 155

There was a documentary made a few years back, I think Joe.ie made it. Anyone know if it's still floating around online? Checked YouTube and can only find a few 2/3 minute clips (some of which are v funny) and I'm not sure if they are from that documentary, but no full episodes that I can see. Anyone?

Surely he's talking about the belt that would be stripped from Conor.

I think that's it thanks very much. Was telling my friend about it and he never saw it. Thanks

I think allowing a guy to continually fight outside his division and not defend is more damaging to the 145 belt.

I dont understand how conor fighting alvarez is more damaging than giving a token belt to aldo/max only for conors next fight after alvarez to be to get the belt back? unless he states he's finished lock stock and barrell with the 145 division theres no point stripping the belt

There are still some good fighters left in the division though and it would open up a lot more with MCGregor gone. By that I mean that the title would be up for contest maybe 2-3 times a year. At the moment its non-existent

There could be a few fighters making the jump up or drop down to FW, and then you look at the current crop Aldo, Holloway, Pettis & Yair Rodriguez to name a few
