ROR has hit the nail on the head. The first year you suffer the most chronic depreciation. Then we have the low PCP rates on new cars and the Brexit situation isn't helping either.

Go shopping again for 171 and I reckon your trade in offers won't be much different to now.

Don't get me wrong. I've been around the block a few times and have encountered depreciation on new cars before. However, to my mind, 7k on the first year, with 3-4 thereafter sounded and indeed looked about right.. nothing like the figure I was quoted.

Anyhoo, I am shopping around. They say hindsight is 20/20 - I wish I'd have known over 25% depreciation in one year was on the cards. I would have thought twice to be honest.

Tbh I think VW's sales tactics in the last couple of years - low PCP rates and big spec improvements - is really going to hurt the used car residuals.

VW's have traditionally had this rep for strong resale value but tbh they're no better than any of the rest of them in that regard now. It's all about high volume new sales...

I've seen worse...my uncle got 24k for a 44k 151 Passat about 2 months ago. He paid 42k for it straight cash.

With the deals on new cars it's very difficult to sell nearly new meaning they have to be cheaper.

not at all surprised at trade on value you were given.
Increased sales have left sales guys a lot less keen to deal. I see a take it or leave it approach returning big time.
The days when a gtd/ gti/R was a rare car commanding a high value are gone I fear and zero per cent finance and new will kill values of nearly new.

Has anyone parked in the airport short term car park? Is it safe enough? I see in their terms they waive all responsibility. Wondering before I place the car there

I have a couple of times. Ended up on the roof as it's usually jam packed on the lower floors. It was fine. I just picked a space at the end of a row and hoped for the best!

The jump from the 132 GTI to a 152 R was about 19k. So you'd hope R to R would be a bit less but who knows, the way the depreciation curve is going!

    15 to 18 k To change I would guess.
If a new model/ facelift had arrived closer to the higher figure.
If sterling weakens even more these are going to be cheap imports as used values are low in uk apparently due to cheap leases in the past

With the big push on low rater PCP deals on new cars I'm not surprised you're getting a low trade-in price. People who would normally be looking at buying a 1 or 2 year old car are now being attracted to brand new cars because of these deals. This is having an impact on the used car market and as such dealers are pricing trade-ins low as they are worst case expecting them to be sitting on their forecourts for a longer period of time.

Does anyone know how long it takes from build week to me getting my car. I ordered a GTD and it was built this week, I was told that it was usually 3 weeks by dealer but i'd like to know what other people have had to wait. I'm getting impatient now its close, thanks.

Anywhere from 2-5 weeks. Depends on the boats and the trucks.

Was 4 weeks for my own in April. I would imagine July is busier.

Is busier better for me? In that the boats will be more frequent?

This time last year there was only one boat every 3-4 weeks. Not sure if that's changed.

There's one from Germany into Dublin every Friday as far as I know goes on to Spain after.

NVD are being even worse than usual at the moment. Should be a 72 hour turnaround after calling a vehicle off for dispatch, but it's more like 15 days at the moment!

Hopefully get a bit better in August with less volume.

Folks the itch for an R won't go away and I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet in the new year and go for one. I currently have a 161PP 3dr GTI manual which by the end of the year will have 30,000kms on it. Can anyone advise on how much it would cost to come up to a 171 R 5 door with the following spec: tech pack, lapiz, pretorias, leather and Dsg ? Would it be a stupid move or should I hold onto the gti for a few more years? I own my current car so I'
ll not be going the pcp route if that should make any difference on trade in?

As mentioned earlier, you'll find if you change the one year ownership of the gti will cost you a lot as for a dealer to shift such a fresh 2nd hand car you they really need to price it keenly. Not many people will want one unless it is significantly less expensive than a new one. Also finance rates on new cars are keener so that influenes new buyers too as I imagine most are not buying with cash. Difference between 0% on a new car and 6% on a 2nd hand car could be 3 or 4 k in interest.

I believe VW are not selling PP GTI's in Ireland anymore which should surely help me with my trade in value? I'm guessing it might be better for me to wait a couple of years and maybe trade in against a year old one or demo ?

An R in the spec you're after is close on 49-50k I think. Sticking my finger in the air, they might offer 30k for your GTI. It's a lot to cough up after 12 months!

Well... Maybe a little more than 30k... 32-33k tops. But you're looking at a cost to change of at least 16-17k.

That's right JoeA3 it comes in just under 50k on the vw configurator. I never thought the GTI would drop circa 10k in one year.... I'd be better off changing to another manufacturer for my next car, say for example one that does not offer low pcp rates?

The R spec you listed is exactly the spec I've in mine... so I had a fair idea ;)

Trouble is, you'll likely get a worse trade in offer from a non VW dealer.
