Healy claiming he didn't know what the wall was about. I'd actually give him the benefit of the doubt in this case.

I looked up his twitter and assumed he deleted the offending tweet as I saw nothing that could stir controversy. Honestly I had no idea what it meant before reading this thread.

Same here, I looked at his twitter before I asked here what he said

Yeah looks fair enough tbh. Probably not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Maybe we should pull a Swiwi and not follow rugby players on social media.

Or maybe people should have learned by now that attributing someone's entire views on an issue to one sentence without asking for clarification is completely stupid. It happens so often these days.

The way the young ones do be importing ask their political views from America they probably all think the ban on cruel and unusual punishment should be lifted.

This. The guy never said anything about the 8th Amendment or the Repeal campaign. Which some of us clearly pointed out before he wrote the follow up tweet. The only issue here is the number of people who made huge assumptions with nothing backing them up and decided to have a go off the back of their own obviously flawed logic. Can we get a Stop, Think, React campaign going maybe?

I'll be honest- ive been following the Repeal the 8th Mural saga and even when i saw Cian's tweet (with the knowledge people found it offensive) id no Idea what he was on about

I actually thought was something to do with Greenscreens :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,951 ✭✭✭✭phog

There are always people who do things to look 'cool'. Take Bernie Sander's campaign as an example. This is an attitude Cian is mocking, not a stance on abortion.

If he has a history of mocking, point it out.

Well he had the #Backstothewall quip too. I think he needs to realise a joke between close friends might not get the same reaction when posted on Twitter or other social media.

Yes. And so often is the case sadly.

I'd support that...but my first reaction was to laugh aloud at how piss-poor traction it would gain!!! :)

I think some people could just do with taking the sticks out of their backsides. If people can't take a joke that's on them. Healy was very vocal about his support for the Yes campaign last year so he clearly isn't homophobic.

People make stupid jokes and say offensive things all the time without meaning to. It usually comes down to a lack of education/awareness on the particular subject rather than being homophobic/racist/sexist etc.

The way to combat it is to point out the the person their tweet/comment/words are/could be taken as offensive and explain why and hope that the person who said them will think a little bit more about the issue before commenting on it again.

Assuming you know exactly what the person meant and why they said it and then bombarding them with aggressive tweets or replies or whatever is not the solution to anything.

This applies across the board these days. For all the benefits social media brings there's a lot of negatives too. This reactionary attitude a lot of people have nowadays is one of the worst. Can you imagine overhearing someone on the bus say "God, everyone's getting their photo taken with that bloody mural." and then you shout it out for everyone on the bus to hear before getting everyone to aggressively tell the person what they meant by it and why they're such a terrible person.

The time he used the hashtag #Backstothewall quip he was actually tweeting about attending a Pride Event. He'd hardly be attending that event if he was homophobic but it showed some poor judgement on his behalf just like his tweet last night.

It reminds me of the Des Bishop story where he told the joke about Down Syndrome carers. There was uproar that he was poking fun at Down Syndrome when he wasn't in any way. And not only that, but he was actually involved in a Down Syndrome organisation and had a few members of the organisation at the show in question. They all laughed at the joke themselves and it was people who, for want of a better phrase, had no dog in the fight that got offended on other peoples behalf. It was so utterly ridiculous.

If Al Porter used #BacksToTheWall in a tweet would there be the same reaction to it as to Healys? Of course not. And is that itself not complete bigotry, i.e. judging the same thing differently based on sexual preference? Of course it is.

As I sad in my last post, if that was Al Porter that posted that would anyone even bat an eyelid? So is the problem really Cian Healy or is the problem the ridiculous modern PC-ness that sees us overreact to the smallest things. If the reaction was a measured one rather than a sheer outrage one it wouldn't be a problem, but the level of outrage at something so small is crazy.

How come this joke is STILL funny...must be one of the jokes I've laughed at most frequently over a prolonged period of time...maybe ever.

    We should tell Ben Betts.

Another crazy comment from him trying to deflect from the Democrats trying to link him to Putin. Not sure how him calling on the Russians to do something does that exactly, but he can say and do what he wants at this stage.

Healy should know better though, that's why I said earlier, if this was a joke with his mates they'd probably just laugh at it but he's tweeting it for all to see, he has to be more PC than that or expect people to respond.

Yeah I personally don't subscribe to that. You shouldn't have to censor innocent comments for the PC brigade IMO.

If it's offensive it's offensive, regardless of whether everyone in the world finds it offensive or if the intention was to offend or not.

  • If it's offensive it's offensive, regardless of whether everyone in the world finds it offensive or if the intention was to offend or not.

Offence is taken, not always offered.

There are people who go out of their way to encounter and take as much offence as they possibly can!

I think that you're giving a little too much importance to words there and not enough to meaning. Simply because you haven't understood what I'm trying to say (perhaps because of my inept communication skills) doesn't mean that I'm saying something offensive.

    Or in more abstract terms:
Language is an imperfect attempt to represent a thought. Sometimes it's well communicated and sometimes it isn't but the mere fact that somebody is offended by an expression of a thought doesn't mean that the thought is offensive.

I'll stop here because I'm heading into the realm of 'if a tree falls in a forest, does it make a noise'. I just wanted to point out that it's not quite as black and white as I think you're saying.

Who defines 'offensive' exactly? It's a ridiculous concept.

I completely agree that some people just like to be offended, however, there are as many people that do say stupid and offensive things without meaning to because they don't think about what they're saying and/or they don't listen when someone tries to explain why it's offensive.

Healy's tweet yesterday seemed to be a bit of both. He claims he didn't know what he was tweeting about so any offence that was caused would have been accidental. That said people seemed to infer their own meaning pretty rapidly in this case and things snowballed from there.

If enough people tell you something is offensive you just have to accept that it is. I'm not talking about individual offense here, I'm talking about things like "black face" or the Washington Redskins. I've seen countless arguments, usually from white people, that these things aren't offensive but if enough people from a particular group are repeatedly telling me they are offended by something I will accept that it is offensive.
