I'm thinking 40-50" screens. The one I have in the sitting room at the moment is 50" and can't imagine going much smaller than that as I'm too used to a bigger screen.

There's shed loads of trinis available on the likes of kijiji and Craigslist for free-$50 so it's something I'll look into at a later stage. Need to get the main living spaces set up first!

Speaking of screens, I'll be interested to see how retro games look over RGB scart on the new 4k TV.

Increasingly worse as the panel resolution increases I'd have thought, but perhaps the built in scaler would fill in the gaps?

Yeah, I've an XRGB-mini Framemeister on the way. Not for the 4k tv, but I'll stick it on it just to see how it looks.

Nothing more retro then a 4K tv :)

I was really hoping 3D tvs would take off properly so we could play head to head with both players seeing completely different screens like 2 fullscreen "split" screens. Think Sony tried it for a bit but never seemed to stick :(

I don't think the tech is there to make 3D at home feasible. If they could perfect a panel that worked like the 3DS (no glasses), and could be viewed from a wide angle (no sweet spot needed), then maybe it'd work. I don't even know if that's possible!

I remember hearing about panel tech that could display different images depending on where you sat. The idea was two people could watch different things, on the same set, at the same time.

For your Canadian la grotte de jeux I would suggest a decent but not huge 1080p screen, I'd do some googling to buy the best one there, and then check out "yard sales" for a cheap/free crt, a trini over there is bound to be as good as a trini here!

Regarding 3D, I never bought into it and, after seeing a 3D film on the big screen that was rendered a murky mess I have gone to 2D only screenings since.
I was looking at the PS3 partnered 3D TV, as it was available for peanuts for a while, but it turns out to be a lousy display, using a shiny, reflective screen surface that makes it almost impossible to use in a room with reflections, so every room you can think of then, bar a pitch dark one!

Yep, yard-sales are the way to go. There was two or three a week within a km radius of where I was staying in calgary.

I've a rather nice Samsung LED 3D TV. I've used the 3D a bunch of times, it works pretty well, but of course the effect is much more limited than in the cinema. Still looks pretty well when you have a title that uses it effectively. Really nice screen on it though.

Surprisingly, best use of 3D (albeit a complete gimmick) was in the Fright Night remake, where a slain vampire burst into flame/ash that appeared to go everywhere. Like the scene in Avatar with the pollen things, but more sudden.

One of the Final Destination movies was in 3D and it was easily the best 3D movie I've seen.

I think you would have to be watching a fair bit of 4k stuff to bother. The TV I have was about 400 in Argos a few years ago, 42 inch Sony, nothing too fancy. Spent the rest on a scaler and haven't looked back. My son was playing Yoshi's Island a few weeks ago, after he saw that Retron 5 picture I posted a while back. I took photos at the time, they are below the original picture I posted.

4K HDR Video on a good large 4K HDR screen is breath-taking. Worth the cost of entry for that alone :)
People need to see HDR video, its not just about the resolution.

That's what I mean, if you're going to give it plenty of use go for it. It may be something I would look at in a couple of years, just not at the moment. I'm still waiting on the pictures of that Titler you picked up, did you ever get around to taking any?

Ah yeah, I rarely stick up any of the actual “R@re!! L@@k”; stuff here. In fact I stopped posting stuff I was getting for a long time as I’m sure people get bored of the same person posting up every day(sometimes it feels like showing off and that’s not the way I am). Only started again in the last week or two.

To be honest the Titler isn’t all that amazing, it’s a bulky yolk and the Twin famicom gets used a lot more. But I’ll be doing a review of the Titler with lots of detailed pics and vids(inc thermal pics) over on Retrovia in the near future. But I’m currently working on the same type of review for the 3DO M2 so that will be up before the Titler (probably next weekend for those interested in all things rare and 3DO).

I just like seeing all the new stuff people get, it wouldn't bother me who was getting it, or how much they were getting. I just like the pictures and seeing all the different formats people collect for. Make sure you post a link when you do that feature on the Titler, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Well I've chucked my name in the hat for the fan translation testing. Fingers crossed I might be given a go at it

Is there any HDR content out yet?
I know its meant to be coming to netflix a while now.

We have a Sony KD 55x8509C and a frimware update gave HDR support but havent tried it out yet.

Yep thats the one. Myself and friends used to put two tvs back to back and hook up our ps1s to slaughter each other in Red Alert (side note: Gap generators were banned). Was hoping some day I could do that but with just one TV :'(

I was in the market for a new tv recently and did a little research on 4k/HDR/OLED/10-bit panels/nit levels etc etc, all very confusing these days. From what I remember reading, there's very little HDR at the minute but presumably it will increase in time. There's a couple of Ultra HD Blu-ray players available but not sure how many films have HDR enabled on them (standard blu-rays don't). I think Netflix have Marco Polo in HDR, not sure what else.
Also, just because a TV says it's HDR compatible doesn't mean it will get the full HDR experience - the TV might not have a 10-bit panel for example and can't display the full range of colours. If it has an Ultra HD Premium sticker on it you should be good though.

I said feck all that and went with a Full HD Samsung that reviewed well and was on sale in Argos. :pac:

Will look again in a year or two and see how the OLED sets are progressing and whether HDR is more widespread.

One thing is for sure, we had it nice and simple with CRTs.

Ours didnt come with an Ultra HD Premium sticker as HDR Compatibility only came afterwards through the firmware update.

It does have a 10-but panel though, but what it is lacking is local dimming. So in terms of brightness HDR will be lacking, and wont be the full experience, but in terms of colour it will reap the benefits.

The only tv I currently have in my living room is a commodore 1084s :pac:

Waiting for the new PS4 to come out and think it may be about time to pick up a decent big panel.

Fair play to Sony for bringing out the update, can do no harm to have it. :)

I'm still rocking a 36 inch CRT in the sitting room (put the new tv in the bedroom). Was going to put it up for free on the marketplace but might hold onto it for a bit yet. Actually dredding trying to get rid of it.

Netlix 4K & Netflix HDR seem a bit of a waste to me...much like their 1080p content, you're still getting a compressed stream which isn't true to source. The loss isn't a problem on a 1080p panel, but at 4k resolutions, you want the source to have the highest bitrate possible. Same as HD television content, it's not even 1080p still, and is pretty poor when compared side by side with an uncompressed source like a blu ray.

I have a, must be 10 year old 42" plasma in the living room, 1080p and with a contrast ratio to die for, back when the only other option was an LCD panel and they were terrible.
Modern responsive led lighting as transformed contrast ratios completely.
