Celbridge Hoop take a warning, those kind of off topic pejorative comments have no place here

Most likely it will be before Christmas, it was said that the roll out would be the remainder of 2016 and into 2017.

Hopefully the standards of Saorview Connect will be good quality, I don't mind waiting if this is the reason.

As they say a good trades man will always measure a couple of times before making a cut.

And some here on these forums wonder why people pay Sky, Virgin, Eir and now Vodafone for their TV services ? Why ? Because how else do you get a box that can record, series link, pause, rewind, fast forward, is user friendly for all the family to use etc etc.
Proper Freesat HD boxes do all that for the UK channels. And they retune themselves when the channels change.

Getting the Irish channels as well on a single box is a little trickier.
But all new TV's down here have Saorview.

One of the features of Virgin, Freesat, SKY and many of the FTA receivers (eg. Ferguson) is that they come with a remote control you can use with your television. Some people will spend hundreds on Harmony remotes.

For Saorview Connect to survive other than as a niche product it has to offer something new and preferably replace an existing box or better still two. If it's just an add on that offers an Irish Channels Only version of Freetime I'm not sure how useful that would be. It would be nice but do I need a third remote control ?

Are there ratings figures for how many people watch RTE player ?
Do we know how many Approved Saorview PVR's were sold compared to the number of people who subscribe to the entry level Pay TV packages here ?

Any such box will be able to handle a network or over the air firmware upgrade. And this is pretty much a software upgrade for an existing high spec box. Some of the higher spec LG / Panasonic satellite Smart TV's are possibly just a firmware upgrade from this.

The only reason you'd need new hardware is if you repeated the original Saorview receiver trick of using lower the spec of some components where you could get away with it.

    http://www.vestelpvr.futaura.co.uk/T7660.php
The T7660 became availabe in January 2013. This model is technically almost identical to the T7650 except in one major way: as Saorview uses MPEG4 over DVB-T for HD content, the hardware ships without the Sony CXD2820R DVB-T2 demodulator chips that the T7650 has. Instead it uses the NEC D61541GB DVB-T demodulator chips, just as the earlier SD models used. This means that although the Saorview T7660 boxes can be used to pick up regular Freeview channels, they cannot receive Freeview HD channels. The software is fundamentally pretty similar to the Freeview+ HD boxes, with the main visual difference being that the prominent use of red in the user interface has been replaced with cyan.

Hope it's relevant to topic (not to start another!) but announcement from Saorview yesterday:-

    Commentary on Saorview

Ireland's Group E opening match of Euro 2016 will be available with the choice of either English or Irish language commentary.

The Ireland v Sweden match which kicks off at 17:00 this evening will be played in Stade de France, and fans watching with a Saorview Approved receiver can choose to view with commentary in Irish by selection the 'Lang/Audio' button on their remote control and selecting Irish via the on-screen display.

If you need any information or assistance with switching to the Irish commentary, our helpline is open now - contact 1890-222012 or email info@saorview, and we'll be happy to help. #COYBIG

Places to keep an eye on maybe
    http://www.freetva.tv/about/
Four leading European free-to-view satellite operators: Fransat (France), Freesat (UK), HD Plus (Germany), and Tivùsat (Italy) have formed the FreeTV Alliance.

Can't find the link but Tivusat rolled out tivùlink that may be like saorview connect or just an amalgamation of the pre-existing on demand services.

Here they are - unfortunately the English version has a very limited menu/amount of text. You' be better off reading them through googletranslate or something similar.

The Free TV alliance was announced back in Sept 2014 - http://cdn.freesat.co.uk/freesat/freesat_website/content/downloadables/freetv%20alliance.pdf

tivùsat's OTT service tivùon! was the first commercial customer for Freesat's Metaphor Hbbtv solution announced last Sept - http://cdn.freesat.co.uk/freesat/freesat_website/content/downloadables/freetime-announces-metaphor.pdf

This week Italy chose HbbTV v.2.0.1 as their single standard for interactive TV services, not know if their DTT service will choose Metaphor as their HbbTV receiver solution - http://advanced-television.com/2016/06/10/italy-adopts-hbbt-2-0-1-interactive-tv-standard/

Totally agree with the above Sam and Galtee. Just about the only thing we can rely on is that SaorView/Sat continues to disappoint. It even took the 'poor cousin' TG4 to initiate a Red Button service of sorts.
I'm still convinced that no one in Montrose even looks at, or cares about, their output after 4PM on Fridays. But that's another story.

Yup; and the "RTÉ News 'Now'" channel should be hauled in front of the ASAI for misrepresentation.

Tivu use the methaphor software, but Humax make their boxes. AFAIK its not Humax for Saorview Connect.

The people who know first will be those who are testing all the new Methaphor/Freesat boxes... and that Eurofins (Testronic) in Belgium.

So we can assume if tivùsat uses Metaphor their terrestrial service will incorporate it also. It should be up and running here with Saorview Connect by then. Tivù and eurofins are both members of the HD Forum Italia which adopted the HbbTV v.2.0.1 standard.

I dont fully understand the question regarding Tivu Terrestrial vs Satellite.

Metaphor works with any DVB service.

Eurofins were very recently appointed by Freesat/Metaphor to speed up software validation/box testing.

Two different services, do they operate independently of each other like Freeview/Freesat (Freeview Play/Freesat Freetime) or are they basically the same organisation with a DTT and sateliite service?

Tivusat is aimed at those who cannot receive the terrestrial services. Its a combination of FTV (Nagra Card) and FTA. Think all the major broadcasters own it including RAI. Its like Freesat UK with more.

So are they different like Freesat/Freeview or one in the same as the DTT service? Can the terrestrial service choose a different HbbTV solution to tivùsat?

Like but not the all the same services on both.

I don't know if the Italian DTT service has a hybrid box mixing both broadband services and DVB-T.

The sat version that is Tivusat is owned by the state broadcaster and commercial stations. Part of that includes tivùon, a OTT service.

Methaphor is just a smart Tv solution. It supports Saorview Connect's HbbTV solution and Tivùsat's tivùon.

Yes I'm aware of all that but doesn't answer the questions I've asked above are they different like Freesat/Freeview and free to choose a different HbbTV receiver solution or one in the same as the DTT service in which case it'll be Metaphor for their connected/OTT service?

They currently offer about 15 services using MHP but following the recent announcement I posted about earlier they are mandating HbbTV 2.0.1 as the national standard with migration starting in about a year's time with a simulcast period (http://dtg.org.uk/publications/HbbTV/20_AngeloPettazzi_HbbTV_Presentation.pdf).

Thought the first boxes were meant to be out in the first quarter of this year?
We are into the third quarter and don't even have specs of this new box yet. I take it they have run into a problem or two.

I think all these "deadlines" are just speculation by posters here. I don't Saorview have ever actually committed to a timeline.

'Events' drive sales of these things so you would think they would have originally aimed to release before the Euros?

Spotlight will be their version of freesat's SHOWCASE
Don't expect any innovations from this shower of chancers.

    Aye, saw that magazine alright.

Quite disappointed to see a Vestel remote control. Hope there's more than Vestel doing these boxes.
