The 34-year-old can be one of Sweden's three over-age players in tournament which clashes with the Reds' pre-season and the Premier League kickoff in August

Was very confident she had qualified two weeks ago as it was unlikely the tripartite places would be used. Still great she is confirmed now.

The last few weeks have been very slow on the qualification front. We will be relying on a few athlethes (and a boxer or two) making the Qualifying standard to top the 78 that qualified in 1996.

Olympic Council announce Swimming & Diving selections for Rio Games

With just 50 days to go to the start of Rio 2016, the Olympic Council of Ireland today announced the Swim Ireland athletes that will represent Ireland at the Games.

Fiona Doyle, Shane Ryan and Nicholas Quinn will represent Ireland in Swimming while Oliver Dingley will be Ireland’s sole competitor in Diving, all four are first time Olympians.

Fiona Doyle reached the FINA A Qualifying Standard for the Games when she won Bronze in the 100m Breaststroke at the World University Games in South Korea last July. Shane Ryan qualified in the 100m Backstroke and was the first to do so in a 50 metre pool on Irish soil ever at the Dave McCullagh Meet in Bangor in March and Nicholas Quinn qualified in the 200m Breaststroke at the Eindhoven Swim Cup in April where he won Gold and set a new championship record.

Oliver Dingley will be Ireland’s first representative in Diving since Dubliner Eddie Heron competed at the London Olympics in 1948. Dingley qualified for the Games after placing 11th in the preliminary round at the Diving World Cup in Rio de Janeiro in February of this year, it was his only opportunity to qualify for the Games.

Doyle, Ryan and Quinn are now back in their home training bases after a two week training camp in Barcelona and will travel to Uberlandia, the Ireland training base for the Games, on the 25th July for a two week camp ahead of the swimming start date of August 6th. Dingley is currently at a training camp in Spain and will compete at the Italian National Diving Championships next week and then the FINA (International Aquatics Federation) Diving Grand Prix in Bolzano, Italy from July 15th – 17th, he will travel straight to the Olympic Village on August 3rd.

Commenting on today’s announcement Swim Ireland High Performance Director Peter Banks said “Ireland can be very proud of this group of athletes going to Rio. They have worked extremely hard to achieve this goal and I know they all have high expectations on themselves going into the Games to represent Ireland to the highest possible level.”

Christina McMahon ran 56.42 yesterday in the 400m hurdles. Just 0.22 off the Olympic time

Ben Reynolds, who hasn't strted his 2016 season from what I can see, is still hanging on to a qualifying spot with his 13.48 in the 110m hurdles

Not so good news in the 4x400m rankings. Ireland is now 16th but if Russia gets back in we'll be 17th and out. Japan and Colombia have both improved their times recently. European Champs and European League give plenty of opportunities for Ireland

By European League do you mean the Euro Team Champs? If so, then this will not be taking place this year. It only takes place 3 out of every 4 years, not taking place in Olympic year because of the European Championships being early in the summer.

A 3:03 should be enough to get us through I think (coupled with our 3:01) but the Euro Champs may be our only chance. English has been injured, and if fit, will miss the relay anyway as it clashes with the 800 in Amsterdam. Barr has been injured too. Murphy has been sick and injured and only back recently. Gregan was struggling with illness I heard too. The team seems a bit cursed at the moment.

Thanks Chivito. Forgot the Euro Teams wasn't happening!

The last 3/4* sports are between
    Kenya (Current average 3:02.52
    Japan (3:02.70)
    Colombia (3:03.3)
    Ireland (3:03.16)
    Qatar (3.03.2)
    Venezuela (3:03.21)
    India (3:03.65) - ran 3:02.17 last week

A 3.03.80 for Ireland would see us jump to the top of those times.

The next few days sees the start of the African championships. So we're looking for slow times from Kenya, Algeria, Nigeria and the rest

*3 if Russia is allowed in, 4 if they're banned

She got in because of her 11th place in the European championships with Germany not selecting the 5th place athlete there and Natalya being the next highest unqualified athlete.

She also would have qualified through the rankings so she was doubly safe

Here's Michael O'Reilly's path to the Olympics. Win these fights and he's defo in

    Round 1; Bye
    Round 2; Cyprus/Belarus
    Round 3; Finland/Mongolia/Spain/Bahamas
    Round 4; Dr Conogo/Moldova/Venezuela/Albania/Belgium/Azerbaijan

He's number one seed. The Azerbaijani lad is number 8 seed. TO have ANY chance, he has to at least reach Round 4. If he wins that fight he's into the semis here, and on to Rio

    Dean Walsh's path;
    Round 1; Bye
    Round 2; Bulgaria
    Round 3; Puerto Rico/India/Egypt (2)
    Round 4; Tajikistan/South Africa/Denmark/Bahamas/Ecuador

Same as O'Reilly. Reach round 4 to have any shout. Win Round 4 to get through

EDIT; Darren O'Neill and Dean Gardiner must win their tournaments so no point in putting up their paths!

O'Reillys path looks the easiest. The Azerbajani lad was beaten in the first round of the European Qualifier (by the eventual winner) and the Finn that beat O'Reilly is not in this competion this time. You would have to think he has a great chance of qualifying if he boxes to form.

Walshs path is very tricky. The Bulgarian was not at the European qualifier and Bulgaria is no longer the power it was in boxing. Kumar is Indian fighter is a former Commonwealth Champion and the Egyptian is seeded 2 but did not fight at the African Qualifier or the 2015 World Championships. Its possible for Walsh but will nneed a bit of luck.

If Walsh fails to qualify I assume Ray Moylette will take his chances at the WSB/APB qualifier in July?

Is Dean Gardiner eligible for this qualifier as well?

Dan Martin and Nico Roche officially selected for the men's road race in cycling. No real surprise

He lost in the last 16 to a guy from Namibia who went on to qualify in the African qualifiers. He was 3rd seed in that.

Martin would have to be classed as a medal contender? I know its a lottery but he is coming into form and seems to have targeted the Olympics this year.

It's four. The IAAF has announced that the ban on Russia stays.

Shannon McCurley, Nicholas Roche and Dan Martin have been confirmed in cycling.

It should suit both of them tbh. Roche and Martin tend to peak for the Vuelta around that time of the year. But yeah Martin definitely has a shot.

Can't find the quarter-final draw anywhere. Is it top of Group A vs second in Group B and the same for Groups C and D? Or is it an open draw to be done when group games are completed this evening? If its the former I would expect Canada to top Group B and we will play Germany tomorrow. Russia, Chile, Spain and Hong Kong in other side of the draw with possibly Russia and Spain in semi's. Best of luck to the guys tomorrow and hope we continue with more upsets!

We were never going to qualify. We need more grassroots 7s tournaments if we're to ever have a hope and need an elite team in the world 7s series but when grassroots play 7s so little....
Not a strong tradition in 7s at all here unfortunately but Nucifora, IRFU high performance director, will have us playing 7s a lot and hopefully next week in European championships we can get promoted to the higher grand prix series which will help us get on to playing in the World Series

We beat Samoa and lost narrowly to Spain and now both teams are contesting the final. We were not that far away at all.

    My point still stands.
We need to be playing 7s regularly and we need it played at grassroots level which it isn't. We'll always fall short and be off/lower than the elite and until both are the case with the elite sides playing regularly against the best and not simply at the end of the 15s season or in the 15s off season and when there is regular yearly clubs 7s tournaments that also are used to get those who are playing rugby in the non exempt schools back playing or playing for the first time in rugby clubs

O'Reilly won all three rounds by all 3 judges today.

Faces a lad from Mongolia next. Then it's winner of Venezuela v Azerbaijan
