Yes, but it is a pan-european commercial channel, with rights clearence already in place, so it would be much less hassle to provide it rather than the regional, watered down, BBC1 and 2 NI.

BBC arn't going to put BBC World on Sky as the BBC News24 is already there and virtually the same thing. There would be more point to campaining for BBC News 24 in ROI on basis that anyone can get BBC World free on Hotbird Analog or Digital and it is really the same thing.

Anyone in ROI can actually subscribe to BBC Prime (Hotbird with Viaccess so digibox no good) for about £75 stg per year. But it hasn't got anything not on BBC1 NI / BBC2 NI so a Sky sub is better value. Again since BBC1 & BBC2 are available in ROI (albeit at a cost) and main europe isn't too much interested in Digibox, the Prime sub on n Hotbird for Europe and BBC1/BBC2 sub for ROI makes some sense. UK addresses can't get BBC prime sub. Anyone in UK can watch BBC World free on Hotbird but why bother since 98% of it is on BBC News24 with a few BBC World programs also taken from old BBC1 / BBC2. So no-one in UK with Sky or DTT needs BBC Prime or BBC World anyway.

A UTV without Granada programs seems a viable option in ROI. With Granada programs (an possibly Carlton if they merge) is politically impossble.

I'm not to sure what C4's inherent problem is. They have 6 different C4 feeds (regionalised adverts), so a reshuffling or even a 7th "region" to solve any "rights" issues isn't impossible. I guess it just is't a priority untill mor ROI subscribers exist.

Does anyone really miss "Five" We had it on Analog satellite till it closed and never watched it once! (Do thye not realise having better programs is what they need rather than spending money being "five" rather than "5". Have they said it out loud to hear the difference?)

I watch Five occasionally with my FTV card but it's not great! The rebrand is horrible. I preferred the 5 instead of five!

TG4 nearly has better programming than five!

Who said anything about viewers in the UK wanting Prime or World ?

The question asked was why not have BBC World on the ROI sub and my point was that raising that issue may cause Sky to ask why not just give them Prime and World and to hell with all the "We have BBC1 and BBC2 NI why can't we have CH 4, 5 and News 24" campaigners.

A 7th region in another country is indeed a major problem for a UK broadcaster who only holds the programme rights for UK transmission.

The reason that BBC Prime or BBC World is not on Sky Digital or Astra 2, is because of the BBC's royal charter, and the fact that an ad-full chanel produced by the BBC is not meant for UK eyes.

Technically, it should'nt be a problem in havig both channels accessible for RoI, but would say that the BBC won't do it because, well, it ain't worth their while.....

It would be if they dropped BBC1 and 2 NI from the ROI Package and replaced them with World and Prime in the ROI sub instead.

(Highly unlikely I'll admit , but very easy to do if another broadcaster using the Astra 2 slot included Prime and World as part of it's package.......)

And if we get to see BBC THREE on RoI boxes when it launches, we'll get to see this as its logo....

From the BBC Three webite (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree):

Stuart Murphy, Controller, BBC Choice says:
'The creatives at Lambie-Nairn have done a really good job. Hopefully viewers are starting to get a sense that BBC THREE is going to inhabit a completely separate space in the multi channel world - one which is about being multi-culturally British, about nurturing new talent and about encouraging and guiding creative risk.'

buh? To me it just look like the BBC logo with a big THREE underneath. But then, I'm not a design specialist.

Ah but the letters keep getting bigger every time. Thats the genius of it.

There's good money in logo design it would seem.

A bit of 'distort' and 'perspective' and hey presto, a tv logo in 2 mins.

Is the campaign dead? lets try and restart it. C'mon people we are letting Sky off the hook as well as the BBC.

Funny you should mention it - I e-mailed the BBC the night before last to complain about the lack of interactive services for Pyramid and Fame Academy (it's not that I'm that interested in them, but I'd like to have the option of ignoring them).

No reply as yet, but I'll let you know when I hear something.

The interactive thing is weird because I can't see what rights issues there would be with Fame Acadamy and Pyramid.

Are they just being mean ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,409 ✭✭✭irishgeo

Well what about the rest of the lads.

  • Registered Users Posts: 820 ✭✭✭SRB

Fame Acadamy has NW BBC1 in it's interactive box - a no no for rights in ROI.

nope Charles, just the same old story...
They would have to get more money off sky and ultimately us lot, to provide these services. This is because of the old chessnut that they cannot be seen by the British establishment to be using British licence payers money to provide extra free services to a foreign country like the Republic of Ireland.
This is especially the case when $ky are probably also looking to charge them to provide these services to Éire.

I don't think this will ever happen.

Sky: Hi BBC, we were thinking. Instead of us paying you to provide a service, why don't you pay us? It's not like you're short of cash

BBC: Not a chance! We won't waste Licence payers money for the sake of a few hundred thousand subscribers in ROI.

    Yeap thats what I mean.
The ROI EPG clearly is being regarded by $ky as a separate chargeable EPG.
They are quite likely saying to UTV ( or whichever ITV entity is talking to them about ROI ), that they want a price for access to us on their system.
They would be saying the same to the BBC, who would have to be making money out of "official" viewing here ie charging us as viewers in a forign country via Sky aswell, so as not to be providing the service to us at the licence payers expense.

On radio of course the BBC world service is a different case, in that it is the voice of the United Kingdom, if not of the Empire to the world and justifies itself being available across the world on shortwave, mw etc for that reason.

I suppose we should be thankfull that not all BBC stations are officially blocked via other channels on our digi boxes.
The fact that they aren't is kind of proof that the BBC aren't mean at all. I suppose we should be thankfull for small mercies.

I wonder what is the economic cost of having these extra channels available in ROI , in terms of all parties being satisified, ie BBC, ITV and $ky and how much our subs would have to go up??

The interactive Children in Need application was showing the English version of BBC1 when you pressed the red button.

Yeah I noticed that, they must've cleared the rights for the BBC Breakfast presenters doing the Rocky horror picture show:eek: or another oversight, or the fact that the interactive gave a number for to ring in cc contributions from ROI meant they made an exception:)

Well I got a reply from the Beeb to my e-mail asking why the interactive services for Fame Academy and Pyramid were not available in Ireland and it goes like this -

    "Dear Mr Slane

Thank you for your recent e-mail.

Some BBC services are now available as part of the Sky Family Channels subscription package. As this is a service provided directly by Sky TV, please contact their appropriate office for information on the cost and availability of services provided to the Irish Republic.

Thank you for your time and for contacting the BBC.

Right, so there is not going to be any movement on this in the near future, and things are so copper-fastened on Sky's and the BBC's part..... time to salute an old friend and lower this thread down the flagpole. Its not giving in, We still want these channels on an Irish Sky subscription and we will continue to ring and e-mail Sky and the BBC to get some action on this. Really, only if NTL or Chorus on their digital packages get the other BBC services will we get them on a Sky sub.

Time to unstick the 2nd most view thread on boards.ie .... it was number 1 until the UTVip thread on IrelandOffline passed it out.... Irony of Ironies.....

Just like to say that while there is nothing wrong with ringing or emailing you will get a far better response if you take the time to write a letter to the concerned parties.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Once the BBC goes FTA, I was going to dig this up... but since someone has done so already....

Ah, the good old days !!!

Nice to see it wasn't forgotten.

And of course this thread is the whole reason that the Beeb have decided to go FTA :):):)

But even if we have to go through "Other Channels", won't it be nice to get to see BBC3, 4 and hear radio 5Live on our digiboxes ?

And even if the campaign didn't work, didn't we have fun e-mailing Sky, BBC, newspapers and everyone else who we thought might listen ?

Thanks to everyone who got involved.
