The Irish American Heritage Center (IAHC), founded in 1976, is one of the premier Irish cultural organizations in the United States. It is a destination for people of Irish descent as well as those who wish to learn more about the Irish heritage.

There's no place quite like the Irish American Heritage Center when it comes to providing the very best in Irish culture through the arts, history, education, dance and social outlets. Located on the northwest side Chicago in a renovated, turn-of-the-20th century building that sprawls over a full city block, the IAHC is dedicated to fostering Irish heritage, culture and traditions in America.

The IAHC boasts a 658-seat theatre, library, museum, art gallery, authentic Irish pub, dance studios, meeting rooms and banquet facilities. The IAHC provides a broad selection of quality educational programs in traditional Irish music, dance, theatre, film, literature, language, Irish customs and more.

The Irish American Heritage Center will celebrate the 35th anniversary of its founding in 2011 and looks toward the future with new initiatives geared toward continuing the mission of preserving Irish culture, heritage and tradition.

He remained aboard the command module, Columbia, on station in lunar orbit while Neil Armstrong, spacecraft commander, and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, lunar module pilot, descended to the surface of the moon in their lunar module Eagle. Collins was one of the third group of astronauts named by NASA in October 1963. Mother Mary Frances Clarke, BVM

Mother Mary Frances Clarke, BVM, founder of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was born in Dublin, Ireland, and after a plague outbreak in 1828, she and a group of friends began a school for girls as a way to help in this desperate time. A Catholic missionary priest from Philadelphia convinced Mary Frances Clarke and her friends, Eliza Kelly, Margaret Mann, Rose O’Toole and Catherine Byrne to come to America. The young women set off for America in 1833 to teach the poor girls of Irish immigrants, supporting themselves by working in a garment factory. Mary Frances and her friends were encouraged to form a pious society to strengthen their commitment and to attract others so that they might expand the work they were doing. On November 1, 1833, the five young women pronounced private vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. This action brought into existence the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVMs). Nearly 5,000 women over the past 170 years have entered the Sisters of Charity, BVM to carry on the spirit of Mary Frances Clarke. The BVMs have staffed U.S. schools in 109 cities in 21 states, (194 elementary schools and 67 secondary schools/academies) and have established two colleges – Clarke University and Mundelein College, now part of Loyola University Chicago. They have missioned in 16 foreign countries.

Sheen held that position for three years before resigning and being made the Archbishop of the Titular See of Newport, Wales. For 20 years he hosted the night-time radio program The Catholic Hour (1930–1950) before moving to television and presenting Life Is Worth Living (1951–1957). Sheen's final presenting role was on the syndicated The Fulton Sheen Program (1961–1968). His cause for sainthood was officially opened in 2002 so he is now referred to as a “Servant of God.”

The Graves of the Earls of Desmond in Tralee
    by Gerald O'Carroll
It is good to see the recognition given to the medieval town of Tralee in the tourism heritage boards displayed now on the main street. When we read the Annals of the Four Masters we are reminded that Tralee was the burial place of the earls of Desmond. Read, for example, the following extract from the Annals, where the context is Earl Thomas's execution at Drogheda in February 1468.
'Thomas Earl of Desmond, the son of James, son of Garrett, who had been Lord Justice of Ireland, the most illustrious of his tribe in Ireland in his time for his comeliness and stature, for his hospitality, chivalry, his charity and humanity to the poor and the indigent of the Lord, his bounteousness in bestowing jewels and riches on the laity, the clergy, and the poets, and his suppression of theft and immorality, went to Drogheda to meet the English Lord justice, and the other English of Meath. These acted treacherously to him, and without any crime (on his part), they beheaded him; the greater number of the men of Ireland were grieved at the news of it. His body was afterwards conveyed to Tra-Li, and interred in the burial place of his predecessors and ancestors with great honour and veneration.'

    From Abbeyfeale ONLINE
Limerick have featured in five finals in recent years, and have distinguished themselves in all of them despite failing to add to their tally of one lone Munster title won away back in 1896.
They were beaten by Kerry (0-23 to 3-12) in Killarney in 1991 with Abbeyfeale native and Irish rugby international, Philip Danaher playing at midfield.
They played Kerry in the final again in 2003 and lost by 1-11 to 0-9 with another Abbeyfeale man, Padraig Browne making his debut in a Munster final.
The following year they were back in the final again, having hammered Cork in the semi-final in Pairc Ui Chaoimh by 0-16 to 0-06. And, on an unforgettable afternoon at the Gaelic Grounds, they came agonizingly close to claiming the trophy when drawing (1-11 to 1-11) with the Kingdom.
The replay was set for Killarney the following Sunday and many felt that Limerick had let their chance slip. However, they proved their pedigree with another rousing display in the heart of the Kingdom and were unlucky to eventually lose by four points. (3-10 to 2-09)
Limerick's best display came in the 2009 final against Cork in Pairc Ui Chaoimh when they played with great skill and determination only to agonisingly lose out by a single point (2-6 to 0-11)
Their last appearance in the final was in 2010 against Kerry in Killarney. Playing into a gale-force wind in the second half and trailing by 4 points with ten minutes to go, a John Galvin goal brought them back to within a point of their opponents and for five unforgettable minutes they ran Kerry ragged but failed to score. The Kingdom eventually rallied and kicked two late points to win by 1-17 to 1-14.

THOUGHT: Cultivate the habit of speaking aloud to God. Not perhaps always, because our desires are often too sacred or deep to be put into words. But it is well to acquire the habit of speaking to God as to a present friend while sitting in the house or walking by the way. Seek the habit of talking things over with God -- your letters, your plans, your hopes, your mistakes, your sorrows and sins. Things look very differently when brought into the calm light of His presence. One cannot talk long with God aloud without feeling that He is near.

The Old Age Pensions Act 1908 introduced a non-contributory pension for eligible people aged 70

eligible, applicants had to be 70 years old, to have an income of less than £31.10.00 per annum and to 'be of good character'. During the first three months of 1909, 261,668 applications were made in Ireland. By 31 March 1910, 180,974 Irish pensions had been granted. The level of take-up from those eligible in Ireland was 98%, as opposed to 45% in England and Wales, demonstrating the need for such a measure due to widespread poverty. The full pension of 5 shillings per week for a single person, or 7 shillings per week for a married couple, was available to those with an income of less than £21.00.00 per annum.

    HC Deb 30 June 1899 vol 73 cc1157-94
The scenery from Tarbet to Glin and Foynes is splendid. At present the steamer lies at Tarbet for six hours, and it would only take an hour and a half to go from Tarbet to Glin and Foynes, and the same to return. It is principally on behalf of the great institution at Glin that I plead that this service shall be extended to Glin and Foynes.

I understand that the Civil Aeronautics Board at Washington have recently authorised Pan American Airways to extend their Atlantic service from Lisbon to Foynes. I am not in a position to say when scheduled flights will commence.
    Mr. Simmonds
Could my right hon. Friend say that there is no difficulty with Southern Ireland about this service being run, on account of that country's neutral status?

I am not aware of any difficulties.

I beg to ask the Postmaster-General whether his attention has been called to a complaint made by Mr. Robert Gibson, butter merchant, of Limerick, that on Friday last he sent a telegram and prepaid for reply to the village of Foynes, County Limerick, addressed to O'Connor, Foynes, asking to have half a ton of ice forwarded on the same date, and that it was notified to Mr. Gibson some two hours later that the address was insufficient, and that, having wired again, he was informed that it was then too late to have the ice forwarded on that day; and whether 1679 seeing that O'Connor is the only person who deals in ice in this small village, so that the address should have found him in the first instance, he will have the matter inquired into with a view of putting a stop to this annoyance and damage to traders.

ERIE: December 6, 1917: Troop movement figures to date indicate that the railroads of this country have safely transported approximately 1,500,000 soldiers to training camps and embarkation points since August 1st. 500,000 of these men have made journeys necessitating overnight travel, and have been moved in tourist or standard sleepers furnished by the Pullman Company . . .

As a result of this cooperation between the Government, the railroads, and the Pullman Company, half a million soldiers have been spared the discomforts of making long train trips in day coaches.

To assure the safety of the men in transit, the railroads have adopted an average speed of 25 miles an hour for all troop trains except when freight cars, needed for the transportation of equipment, are included in the trains. The speed is then reduced to 20 miles an hour.

May 23, 1918: Among the many special trains, mostly bearing troops, that passed through Hancock on Sunday was one carrying 129 Italian soldiers enroute from the Pacific coast who were made prisoners by the Austrians in their drive into Italy last winter. They escaped through Siberia to the Pacific coast, where they were picked up by a Japanese man-of-war and landed at one of our Pacific ports. They were on their way back to Italy to resume the fight against Austria.

    October 3, 1918:
Special Train to Boost Loan - Carrying Literature,
War Trophies and War Heroes Will Arrive This Morning

The special train to boost the Fourth Liberty Loan, carrying war trophies, war heroes, and speakers, will arrive at Hancock via the Erie Railroad this Thursday morning at 9 o'clock.

On the exhibit cars are carried a Browning heavy machine gun, Vickers and Lewis rapid firers, liquid throwers of German and French make, a 16-inch shell, the price of which was $5,000, French and German bomb throwers, German trench mortars, aerial torpedoes, and depth bombs used to vanquish the German U-boats. Two flat cars carry camouflaged big guns.

The train will remain until 11 o'clock on the siding near the depot, and the cars will be arranged so that persons entering them on the one end will be able to walk through and see everything in a thoroughly systematic manner. . . .

While there was a request for feedback made earlier (now deleted) this is not the place for it as it is off-topic. PM me & the local mods if you wish to discuss.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Hey guys,

Just an update on the board game evenings - if anybody is still interested - there have been several developments.

    1) We have since christened the group the Listowel Board Knights.
    2) Soon after, or simultaneously we created a Facebook fan page of the same name.
    3) We are still officially meeting up in the Arms every second Tuesday at 8 pm. Unofficially members have been keen on playing in the intervening Tuesdays as well, so we're actually there most weeks as it stands.
    4) You may also have seen us featured in an article by Michelle Crean in last week's Kerry's Eye (page 6).

Anyone interested, feel free to come along, we have an ever expanding selection of games, and if you bring one along we'll happily give that a bash as well.

    Next meeting Tuesday 5th Aug.

    Hope to see you there.
