My family are big into Citroens back home. The stuff just doesn't rust over here in Oz though...

Today I stumbled across a 1979 (old Dublin registration) Volvo 343 tucked away in a lane way and was amazed with what I saw. The owner caught me having a look and came out and had a chat with me about it, asking me if I was interested.

It was a lovely original car that looked relatively tidy and I'm thinking of going back and leaving a note on it. It would have to become my daily driver if I were to buy it though.

    What do people think?

Apparently it hasn't been out for years, it was in very good order. Have you any history on it? It's RHD.

The letters escape me, but there were three of them from what I remember.

Funnily enough, I was never big into the small Volvo's. It was mainly the large ones that were my thing.

    It's grey.

I would go for it, it's just things like the leaf spring suspension are scaring me off as well as the likeliness that it doesn't have power steering.

I'll report back anyway if I decide to go further about it.

I dont know who owned it originally.
It would have been assembled by Summerfields.
Between '46 and '48 they assembled 270 of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,318 ✭✭✭✭carchaeologist

And of that 270 there can't be many left.

Ah right, so this must it then:p

Maybe the lack of PS might not be an issue, she is not a big car.The suspension is a simple set-up.

I think it's a good idea. But then I think a lot of things are a good idea at the time.

Good question, I didn't get enough of a look at it to see.

It could very well be the CVT, as I believe most of the earlier ones were.

I'm really just thinking out loud with this whole idea. The fact that it will cost 50 euro a year to tax is one of the main things that is attracting me, as well as the sheer rarity of the car.

Tofaş is an even more obscure manufacturer - from Turkey, again making old Fiats under licence, but this Dogan yoke is actually a facelifted 131, and apparently the upmarket version :)
I could be wrong but that looks closer to a Regata than a 131 no ?

I just put an engine into an identical coloured Fintail last week. What's he doiung with the old engine and box.

Anyway...........who makes a turbo V12. Merc make a bi-turbo......a 320CDi engine would be far better, with a 280SEL 4.5 rear axle, like my own
Saw this yesterday, apparently it's going to be fitted with a turbocharged V12, with 700 brake if im to believe what I was told. Car is a '64 with a petrol 6cyl.

Exactly, thats what I thought. I know no more about the car though.

Sorry about the quality, taken with a phone. Not too sure with the story on this one, if its up for a restoration or what, doesn't seem to have an engine in it. Its up in Broadstone and hasn't moved for some time. Reg is CZA 674, so its late 59 or early 1960.

Not as bad as (but not far off) the red E28 I saw at a show two years ago... wearing ZV plates.

CZA*** was issued from late November to early December 1959. CZA674 was part of a series of Leopards batch by CIE registered from CZA661 - CZA720 and carrying the fleet numbers E1-E60.
This particular bus (E14) was bought back by Bus Eireann over 20 years ago from a private enthusiast who had preserved and restored the bus after it was withdrawn in 1982. It had worked in Dublin, Limerick and Tralee during its working life.

Sad to see it in a state of disrepair like that.:(

It's a 131 underneath.. the doors are the same.. the most expensive piece to redesign.

Look at bonnet shut, rear quarter light position.. filler cap etc..
