If it i found his ad on donedeal for it...

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/vintagecars/1513341

everytime i drive past it it looks like the paint is flaked to shee-ite.

Is that the same car, although it looks in better condition in the ad than on the forecourt and the colour looks different too. It can be seen behind a tow-truck. Theres also a Vanden Plas Allegro for sale there too on ZV plates.

Should the SL hard top be concave on the top?

I think 230SLs were built up to 1967, the model itself was built from 63-71. They are actually a very good daily driver, I had a 450SEL some years ago when I lived in Germany and shared a place with a girl who had a 250SL. There are still around 4-5000 of them in Germany alone.

Yes, because of this they are often called the 'Pagoda'. iirc the sides are raised to make it easier to get in and out, and by doing this made the removable roof stronger and a bit lighter.

possibly although I had a very early ghia new and that was a 99 (complete with flake)

That really shows the value of modern cars today, 10 years old scrap value shocking really...

I worked for a Ford main dealer for a number of years and yes I think it was the launch of the Focus in Oct or Nov of 1998 and number of them were registered then as demo models for the dealerships etc and a few but very few sold to the public in 98, however a few did but but Jan 99 was when they really hit the roads. I would guess maybe 20 if that were registered in 98.

    My pennys worth :)

The focus was launched in Ireland on the 20/21st of November 1998...and I know the 21st as someone belong to me died on that day...:(

But there are no RHD countries in the Middle East...
I still haven't found any definitive proof of where these are coming from. I've heard about some "cancelled exports" intended for East Asia being sold as late as 2000 (they were built around 1995-6, not sure where they were lying around for so long) - this would explain the km/h speedos and RHD as Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Japan and a few others drive on the left.

Or maybe South Africa? There's a 1988 123 series Merc around here.
