They're the two main reason why they won't insure Japanese cars.

I tried Autoline again (via the 'callback' facility on their website) and they got back to me. I ended up going with them - 195 comp: for a '78 1.9 car, 3000 miles p.a., 'salvage buy back' and 'agreed value' all included ! :)

I see they also now have a '1890' number in their ad (in the current 'Retro Classics' mag).
Do you have that 1890 number on hand ?

    Update:

I spoke with Vincent and got insurance on my 1984 Toyota Landcruiser 4 Litre diesel for 241 fully comp.
Fantastic to deal with. Definitely can recommend their services.

Anyone know of an insurer that will cover a 25 year old? We have a family WW2 Willys Jeep 1943 and want to get my younger brother who is 23 covered so that he can drive it at my wedding. We have had it insured with FBD but they don't appear to cover an under 25. He is insured with FBD himself on his own car with 4 yrs NCB and has held his licence for 5 yrs and currently has no points. Any help greatly appreciated!

Is he not covered with third party through his own insurance?

Vincent gave me a similar quote on my '71 Spitfire which has had a Toyota engine replacement. All the other big name insurers and some brokers wouldnt take me on when they heard of the engine replacement (original engine replaced with a similar sized cc and hp 4EFE engine). Vincent took the time to ask about the conversion and seemed interested, all the others when they heard the word 'engine replacement' were like 'no, sorry, we cant offer you a quote on the grounds of the engine swap'!

Sounds like I might have to call one I finish my touring. Anyone I've spoken to ruins away add soon as I mention engine conversion

No, annoyingly FBD don't seem to provide you with third party for other vehicles until you turn 25 either.

I've been reviewing these pages and have taken it that it's pretty hard to get insurance on any Japanese cars?

I'm a 27 yo looking to insure a 1.3 96 Starlet on classic insurance if possible but it seems unlikely. Anyone able to suggest otherwise?

I have a 95 Starlet. I got quotes from AXA & Britten Brokers both around €600. That's with full nc & no convictions or claims

I went ahead and got my insurance yesterday, even though the car isnt road worthy just yet but it'll be another push to keep the pressure on, was in touch with Vincent again and got it for €241.57, 3000 miles, €150 excess, full comp. Get it taxed next and at least I can take it out and about for test runs closer to the finish and not have to worry.

Just renewed with First Ireland after a decent quote from Autoline kept them keen.

€220 for comp. on a high value MkII Escort RS2000. 2000 miles limit.

Nice. I had a similar quote from them (€205 fully comp) on a low value car based on 2k miles and already having another car insured in my own name (which I don't ). I hadn't checked and didn't mention any other quotes from any other classic insurers.

Also worth mentioning is that any additional classic car (max of 10 cars) with First Ireland is just another €100 per year on top of what you are paying (fully comp)

First Ireland's original quote was €259 btw.

Could Autoline not beat the €220 ?

    No.

They don't have a ncb scheme either, so staying with them for 2+ years could be expensive ultimately.

    That's interesting.
I didnt know that the Classic Car policies had a ncb feature.
I must look into that when my own policy comes up for renewal.

I always appear to just get the flat quote from any of the companies that I contact. In fact, they never even ask about the number of years NCB that I have accumulated on my classic policies in the past.

Just checked my renewal with First Ireland/AIG - I have 6 years or 60% NCB

The main reasons I went with Autoline was because they include 'agreed value' and 'salvage buy back' as part of the policy.

I have an agreed value with First Ireland

Good to know. It's about time that agreed values became an option on classic insurance in this country.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭jozi

Will they honor it though? And who determines that the agreed value is correct? I can tell them my E30 is with 15k but that could be what I think, if they go searching online they will find E30s for anything from 1k to 9k but not many with the same spec and restored like mine

The whole point about agreed value is that the insurer is bound to honour it. No matter how much anyone says the car is worth. So if the agreed value is €10k and the car burns to ashes with zero recoverable value, the insurer will pay you €10k (minus your excess)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,105 ✭✭✭hi5

But if you're car is written off in an accident and it's not your fault you would claim from the other parties insurance, would the other parties insurance have to go with the agreed value?

So am I right in saying u can't get classic insurance on a subaru impreza turbo 20+ years old. I'm 42 with a daily driver

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,033 ✭✭✭Silvera

I have an agreed value with First Ireland

Interesting, they didnt offer this to me only a few weeks ago and lost my business as a result.

    Did you try autoline?

    Did you try autoline?

Just gave them a go and yeah comes in at €370 for a 1995 Impreza WRX with a 5k mileage allowance.

Not bad, just seeing what First Ireland come back with.

Just need to save a bit and ill be adding to my collection. :D

How rigid are Autoline about the need for another everyday policy? I want to insure a 95 Starlet but I will be using it as my only car.
