Looking into used ID.3s for my partner as a first car, thinking of spending around 20k. I see there are a few 2020/2021 models available in that price range now. I remember software being a big issue with them at the time but would I be right in thinking that's been addressed by updates since?

Anything in particular I should be looking out for?

It’s just one thing to look for, but the higher spec original ID.3’s tended to have the iq.lights - Like this 211 reg Family, listed for €15k before negotiation:

20K should get you newer than a 2021 I would have thought?

Second that, IQ lights the only way to go, light up bar on the grill and matrix is what you want.
Being on 3.8 software would indicate that it’s up to date.

Having alloy wheels may also be an indicator, east Derry and andora (spelling?) on the better equipped cars.
Id stay away from the ‘Life’ or ‘dx’ versions, think they came with hub caps -

Question on the front parking sensors - we have a 2025 model and the front parking sensors don't activate automatically?

They only seem to become active if either I put the car in reverse or hit parking assist. Our other cars the sensors would always automatically start beeping if you got too close to the car in front at a traffic light / pulling up to a wall to park.

Is there a known fix to this?

    Thanks

Sounds faulty, they should come on by themselves. Could be a setting somewhere though, I'd get back on to the garage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,434 ✭✭✭sk8board

I find they only come on automatically when I creep towards something inside the working range - but they do come on

Hi everyone I have an id3 GTX, the mood lighting is not responding so I can't adjust the colours. The lights are working but I have 3 different colours on the screen, the dash and the doors. Anyone come across this?

I'd an ID3 and think they are great but you'll have no warranty at this stage. Would you consider a small battery Ioniq 5? You should be able to get into a 2022 for 20/low 20s and you'll still have 2 or 3 years left on your manufacturing warranty.

Same issue with warranty but a cupra born had better software than the early ID cars and should be available for very low 20s now too, just a closer alternative. The longer warranty on the ioniq makes it decent shout though I agree.

Just to update on this, I had a root around the in car menus on the weekend.

Turned out there was a setting for "auto-on" unticked... Working perfectly now thankfully.

Really enjoying the car tbh... I find myself taking the keys to this over the VRS whenever I can!

Side note… I got the short straw with this ID.3, like the last one, in that I got landed with Bridgestone tyres again. I suspect they will melt off this one at about 12k km's again, like they did the last one, and with 326hp at the rear it could be even sooner than that! They have only 6mm thread again to begin with!

As expected, the Bridgestones didnt last long. Down to thread limit at 15k km's.

Replaced with Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance. €225 each inc fitting and recycling fee… so not cheap! I could have done it cheaper by buying direct.

I stuck with local dealer buying it and I'm happy with the Goodyears on previous cars, so I stuck with them.

Dreading the early tyre change since they are bridgestones. My tesla still has a tiny bit of life left in it Michelins at over 60k. Hopefully the potenzas being wider than the standard fitted last a bit longer. There's a reason bigger/heavier vehicles have wider tyres.

I must say though when you do push on the grip is better than any tyre I've had.

    Hi

regarding a 2020 era ID3 with the 58kWh battery, what are ye averaging in kilowatt per 100 kilometres?

I know this depends on summer or winter, wet or dry roads, wind, motorway or town or rural country roads, how aggressive you drive etc etc etc, just looking for a ball park figure, is it averaging 15 kilowatt per 100km or 22 kilowatt per 100km etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭bodgerfederer

my 2021 id3 shows 16.5kwh per 100km over the last 50,000km. short trips in cold weather is what really hurts. this time of year, mixed driving, 13.5kwh is pretty average for me.

thanks. Great to get some real world examples 👍

About 13-ish in the summer driving on national roads, took the car to France this year and was impressed with the range on the motorways.

But once the temperatures drop the range decreases significantly, much more so than our Ioniq 5, I guess the heating in the ID3 isn't that efficient

My cupra born over 46k kms, from sept 22 to June 2025 so through all seasons and mixed driving was giving 16.4kwh average since start so very consistent with yours.

Yeah what's with VW and Bridgestone, they're a joke. Had them on my previous Id3 and they were toast after 25k. Got Goodyear replacements and still had them 50k later when I sold car. Have continental on current id3 and still fine after 43k.

On a separate topic how are fuel costs comparing atm for EV and ICE cars, anyone know?.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,377 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I have seen my id3 down to 12.5 on the warm summer days...but since I bought it I am averaging 15.3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭bodgerfederer

Any idea why my ID3 is has started charging slowly at home?

I'm getting 4.5-5kwh per hour, not the usual 7kwh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 424 ✭✭Ev fan

Similar for my last Born which I had for 2 years getting 6.1/6.2 km/kWh which tallies with WLTP range of 350km. It might be an idea to put a more efficient motor in new models- modified APP550 motor? Which would give increased efficiency and more range for the same battery size.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,444 ✭✭✭Buddy Bubs

Ive Tavascan now since Feb with the newer motor and its only slightly higher on average

17.5kwh/100kms but its a fair bit bigger and heavier and has more power

I dont think it will match born over 3 years or so that I'll probably keep it but I imagine Born with new motor would be better. Only slightly though. Maybe 15kwh per 100km.

R5 I have is getting 14.3 kwh and its a much smaller and lighter car again so can't see any Born beating that with my driving.

Are those Goodyears EV specific tyres or regular fare ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,378 ✭✭✭KCross

any time I bought them before they were just regular fare but these ones for some reason do have “electric drive” or something written on them and they have the sound insulation on the inside

Could be a couple of things, cars BMS system, current load on the house or the car charger itself. I've a Zappi that does the same some nights when I'm timed charging set. I usually set a number of hours to cover me in such scenario.

Heads up for any iPhone users, testing out the new iOS and Google Maps now works with the driver display and HUD.

It's not the load on the house, I can plug it in with nothing else running and still no 7kwh.

I've tried cleaning contacts with cotton buds but no joy. Next step is to try a different cable or home charger I guess.
