Still a few sparks off the Clare Coast aided by those converging sea breezes I'd reckon.

    Record of todays sferics detected.

Unfortunately weakening as coming over land.
As I type a little rain starting, but nothing much of interest otherwise. Photo taken from west Co Wexford looking east.

Area of surface LP S of Ireland and rotating upper Low still having an effect over mainly Munster tomorrow, moisture rich tongue of warm airflow over the country coinciding with peak diurnal heating in the afternoon , Dp's into the mid teens, subtle Deep Layer shear improving in the afternoon with surface convergence and topographical lift all lending a hand to produce instability and CAPE into the high 100's of j/kg resulting in convection with thunderstorms a probability.

Follow up to my post and photo #154, got a nice bit of rain from that shower in west Co Wexford. Help the lawn anyway 🙂.

The dog is terrified, hiding under bed atm, no sign of any thunder but dogs can be very sensitive to sudden drop in atmospheric pressure.

There is a moderate risk of isolated thunderstorms in parts of Clare, Limerick, Kerry and north Cork later this afternoon and early evening. Spot flooding and difficult driving conditions are likely in any localised downpours. Keep an eye on the rainfall radars and met.ie.

Let's hope we see some of it near Tralee. Downpour yesterday in causeway and I didn't see a drop

Much quieter in north Clare today. Can see some clouds forming but this time yesterday there were many more clouds and it was fairly windy. Much calmer today.

Showers kicking off in west Kerry now. I’d say today’s event will be more of a south western thing

I wonder will we see more countrywide storms next week with the breakdown? Or will it be a soft breakdown?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,110 ✭✭✭✭Wanderer78

the potential breakdown has disappeared from long range, so we might have this for some time yet

    No video, didn't happen 😋

A lot of the cloud to ground strikes seem to be happening out at sea rather than over land for the past two days. I guess that is due to a change in convective activity / change of airmass

Drove home through a huge downpour around 16.30 here in Kerry, standing water pooling on roads and the surface steaming, ended up with 6.8mm here and a light shower atm, activity seems to have died off now apart from a few sferics off the North Kerry coast. Glad of the rain, could remain dry for many for the next 10 days !

Temperatures dropped a whopping 7.5C here during the rain.

Record of detected sferics today, Blitzortung didn't do too well today.

I was surprised with the report from the BBC, hadn't looked too far ahead but yes, in my amateur understanding, an upper low with associated cold pool and subtle/ sufficient vorticity aiding instability supporting convection and thunderstorm development depending on how much moisture in the atmosphere. Early charts show very good lapse rates and the early indices supporting potential for thunderstorm development, could be fairly widespread under and close to the cold uppers . Interesting model watching over the next few days.

Interest still there for Mon and Tues producing convective showers and thunderstorms, Tues looks the most active day and currently both the ECM and GFS showing widespread showers some locally quite heavy with a risk of hail especially Tues I would think and some fairly high totals currently showing up but a bit early to know for sure but will include the current charts for now as more an indication of potential but areas getting the most rainfall wont be fully known until later Sun/ Mon. Warning potential especially Tuesday from slow moving storms which could drop a lot of water locally.

It's badly needed. The farmers won't be too happy who have silage to cut and bale.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,748 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

There could be some thunderstorms in the early hours of Tuesday morning, will have a better idea later Sun into Mon.
