Switch 2 Thread!

There are 3 types of Nintendo Switch 2 cartridges

I said it before that I believe Switch 2 cartridges(64GB) are Switch cartridges, just locked by a code by Nintendo. And this only reinforces that thought even further.

I've heard some say that the cost of each Switch cartridge is €16, if true, it's ludicrous. And it's no wonder almost every 3rd party are opting for Game Key Cards instead.

You may not need to providing you're ok with removing the game from your system once you've completed it? That'll be my approach for single player experiences. I'll keep Mario Kart etc. installed.

How does that tweet even reinforce your misunderstanding?

Switch 2 carts CANNOT be just Switch carts. Switch carts do not operate the same read speeds as Switch 2 carts. Switch carts are based on UHS-I, similar to microSD cards. Switch 2 carts are based on SD Express and have read speeds similar to SD Express cards. This is known. This is documented. You can't just magically make a Switch cart operate at 10x the speed. It's like you think a CD and a Blu-Ray are the same because the physical dimension are similar.

    • LB carts are the Switch 2 (exclusive) carts and use the new cart format based on SD Express with high-speed read.
    • LP are game key cards and essentially just have a few kilobytes on them to store the "key".
    • LN are Switch carts and use the existing Switch UHS-I format. Put that cart into a Switch and it will play. Put that cart into a Switch 2 and it will also play.

It's not that hard to understand to be honest.

I depends. I suspect when a Switch 1 game is booted, the Switch 2 is "locked" to downclocking (for lack of a better term) itself to operate at Switch 1 levels. It probably does this for compatibility reasons by default. That said, it has been demonstrated on Switch that overclocking the original hardware does provide some performance boost to games. So in theory, non-patched games could see a benefit if the system doesn't limit itself to Switch 1 levels.

Switch 1 games run on some sort of emulation on Switch 2 so that may offset any gains the faster hardware might have provided

It's not really emulation. Not fully to any degree or what we would normally call emulation. Not like N64 games on Switch for example. You're not wrong, but I just feel the use of "emulation" means something a bit different in the gaming space.
It's mostly native with a translation compatibility layer done in both hardware and software. We learned much of this from the Nvidia leaks years ago - almost everything leaked back then has proven to be true with regards to Switch 2. Part of that compatibility layer could be limiting the resources a Switch game gets from the hardware for the very reason of compatibility.

Oh interesting. Had it in my head that it was full on emulation but you're right, I reread that Nintendo dev Q&A and they call it something between emulation and native compatibility as emulation would kill the battery.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Switch 1 games fair, I guess it'll just make things run smoother and at their max dynamic resolution for the most part. Really hoping it's not too much work for devs to go in and bump the resolution and/or framerate (and that not all of those kinds of updates cost money)

I'm really hoping The Witcher 3 gets a Switch 2 update. It's a miracle it runs on Switch, not great but playable. CDPR seem to be doing a great job with Cyberpunk on Switch 2 so they might put in some effort for a Witcher 3 update.

Same, would love to see it. I think I'm more excited at the idea of that kind of older AAA game coming to/being updated for Switch 2 than the new stuff. Like if that RDR2 rumour is true, I'll play the hell out of that on Switch 2

Dreaming a bit here but if Titanfall 2 got ported, I wouldn't play anything else for years....but I know it would run and look better....

Anyone know who owns that now?

Actually, I'll add DriveClub to that too

I think it's EA. A Switch 2 port sounds too good a thing for their customers for them to actually do

Titanfall 2, probably the best single player sci-fi FPS I've ever played.

Drive Club, I still love that game, but it's a Sony gig only, and they abandoned it. It has links to the team who made MSR and PGR, and you can certainly feel it in the game. And, along with the motorbike add-on, it's brilliant.

I've not played a racing game on Switch before but I believe it's not great because the triggers aren't analog, so you can only have full brakes or not at all, if that makes sense

Really looking forward to this now initially I placed an order for delivery but changed to collection, so glad I did now so I can pick pick up at midnight

Went for the Switch 2, Physical Mario Kart World and the steering wheel set

Will pick up a memory card down the line when they reduce in price, kids are looking to get the camera but I'll hold off on that too awhile..

    I haven't been to a console midnight launch since PS4 😂

Edit to say feel free to add me for some online Mario Kart World games! I'll add my friend code below! 😬

I've just had my download codes for the Switch 2 upgrades to BotW and Totk delivered to my inbox from Nintendo!

    It's happening!

I'm kind of hoping for analogue support on the GC controller.

The original did, and the GC games supported through the online service may need it.

If that's the case, it won't be too much of an effort to pop in the code to make analogue triggers a thing

Did you have to do anything to get them? Nothing here and I've played both games and have the required membership.

Got my email from Smyth's saying they are getting ready to take my money over the weekend. I still think it's mad money for what you get, but I'm a sucker for new hardware.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 415 ✭✭LauraW7746

Me too, I was the same about the PS5 Pro when they announced the price I thought they were crazy but I got 1 anyway 🙈 I'm very happy I did though, I think the switch 2 will be the same a bit pricey but worth it in the end 😬

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,314 ✭✭✭BenK

So did I and agree on being a sucker and it being mad money! Generally seems a lot less hype about this than the Switch 2 but will be interesting to see how it performs.

Grumpy, Laura and Ben are clearly the unreliable ones that would have their monthly pay spent by Thursday so they take their money sooner. 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 415 ✭✭LauraW7746

I've no email either 😂 but maybe it's cos I'm collecting!?

Either way my money is well spent for the month 😝

No email here either and I preordered 5 minutes after they went live back in April...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,145 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I guess that's the question then, Grumpy and Ben are ye collecting or getting it delivered? I'll be collecting.

Yeah no email here either, ordered on the 2nd as soon as Smyths sent out a mail saying they were live. Hopefully they are just staggering the emails. My order on the website got an 'Edit payment details button' yesterday that wasn't there before so I'm hoping that means all is OK

I'm getting it delivered. If you are collecting they don't take the money until you get there so I wouldn't expect an email.

In the email they said they will start pre authorising the cards on the 1st so delivery can be done for the 5th.

I'm away next week so I'll have to try update the delivery guys to move it by a day. As you can't do it on Smyth's site.
