Could there be two men any more different? I know very little about Carter but it looks like once he was done with the presidency, he devoted the rest of his life to helping some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world. I'm not sure if Trump has ever done a single kind thing in his entire life.

I'm pretty certain they did last time too, and he couldn't get anything passed.

And yes , the democrats have to take responsibility for their failure to retain the white house.

The SC intervention on immunity swung the election, gave his lawyers a sight of the finish line for the delay, delay, appeal, appeal tactics the MAGA donors monies mostly spent on making some lawyers very rich and keeping a 32 count guilty felon out of prison, which was his only chance of avoiding jail.

The leader of the free world, are you talking about Biden or Trump?

Name me one other US president than Trump who needed a mob on the street to attack the Capitol building in Washington DC to try hold on to the office of president?

To be blunt, I thought that Trump should have faced a summary trial in the field the same week on a charge of treason against the US and its citizens and faced a summary sentence on conviction. I still hold that opinion. He has succeeded in turning the republican party in on itself, making it the Trump MAGA party with the freedom to appoint his family to its board of management.

Trump most definitely is not viewed as the leader of the free world, he wasn't viewed as such during his first term so he won't be for round two. He's doing a fine job of fracturing the US and attempted to do so on a global scale. The reality is he's incapable of commanding respect of leaders from across the globe. He's liked among autocrats but he isn't even their leader.

"The Democrats lost to this man twice."

    Really? Are you sure?

I ask as this conflicts with Trump's stated position. According to the Donald, the Democrats lost to him 3 times.

Are you suggesting that Trump has being lying?

Hold on. The man that was going to cut big government has now proposed two entire new departments, a massive increase in ICE, paid pre school for every child, the GOP are demanding that unless California agrees to do what they want they won't get any disaster relief, free IVF treatment for everyone.

And isn't it interesting that when California has it fires it the perfect time to talk politics and what should be done to avoid a repeat, but school shootings its all 'thoughts and prayers' and its not the time to talk about solutions as we need to focus on the victims.

I listened to the last hour or so of the hearing, it was pretty funny to hear all the lads going on about woke and so on.

"Mazie Hirono, a Democratic senator, tried to nail down Hegseth’s views on invading Greenland, staying sober and shooting protesters, but the nominee largely refused to answer."

Biden's policy on Gaza has been absolutely shocking and one based on promoting American interests, to the detriment of civilians in Gaza. He leaves a shameful legacy of misery and death.

It does seem that Trump wanted this matter over before he got inaugurated. I suspect Israel is just a headache now for America and Trump didn't want to hear about it again. Trump gets bored easily and quickly. This can have it's benefits.

The whole analysis on these threads was warning of the dangers of a Trump presidency for Gaza. How catastrophically wrong are most of the contributors to American affairs. It was Biden and the Democrats that were dangerous for Gaza.

Without knowing the details of the apparent ceasefire it is far too early to claim anything…good or bad.

Perhaps Israel has already got everything it wants and is happy to call a halt given the continued international outcry.

Will Israel be forced into reparations? To enter into dialogue about acceptance of Palestine as a sovereign state?

Or does Israel simply stop killing everyone for now to regroup and act as is they did nothing?

    Nonsense of the highest order.

Trump was critical of Biden when they talked of holding up arms deliveries!

It suited Trump entirely to allow his buddy Netanyahu to settle scores then come in playing peacemaker. When anybody paying attention can see how Trump stirred things up with the Jerusalem embassy move, and publicly egging on Netanyahu to get the job done.

Care to explain how such public interventions were not to the detriment of civilians?

How were American interests in the region served by backing the Embassy move?

    Care to answer?

The Embassy move, which wasn't reversed by Biden by the way, looks completely trivial in comparison to the last 16 months.

Trump was not in power the last 16 months - history will show Biden's America first policy as key in the destruction of Gaza. Trump's comments were said from an opposition point of view and in normal situations Opposition statements are not taken seriously.

Hasn't the misery in Gaza just shown that the Democrats are just politer Republicans? I personally don't see much difference between Biden and Trump - old creepy men that say crazy stuff but ultimately act to promote American interests.

Their tunnel vision blinds them completely. They are incapable of rational or objective discussion.

Its this sneery attitude looking down their nose at Trump on his "poorly educated" "ignorant" supporters, the utter disdain for the lower classes.

These people will learn nothing from their mistakes.

They are saying the same Chicken Little nonsense they were saying 8 years ago.

Trump is not stupid, you dont run so many successful companies by being stupid. You dont win 2 Presidential Elections against the odds by being stupid.

These same people think Musk is stupid too, the richest man in the world being labelled stupid, its laughable.

Hasnt the misery in Gaza "just show" that there is nothing pro Trumpers wont try to exploit to attack Demcrats in denial of all evidence?

The Embassy move came at a critical juncture and derailed the peace process in progress at the time.

But you dont blame Trump for it but Biden for not reversing it!

    Nonsense.

Trump was the head of the Republican Party who had majority in the House and at the time presumptive candidate of one of the only parties with a chance at the Presidency. So nope he hasnt been in opposition in the way you deliberately misrepresent it.

    So nonsense - again.

Especially not when he is in contact with his buddy Netanyahu.

You would know this if you were paying attention and knew anything about the US political setup.

Terrible analysis on here for years by the same posters who have Trump derangement syndrome. The situation in Gaza was an opportunity to reevaluate their view on American politics but even that hasn't altered their tunnel vision of American politics.

Any idiot could see that Harris was a dreadful candidate and bringing the likes of popstars and Michelle Obama, who is not popular, at the end was stupid beyond belief.

But has Trump reevaluated the US approach to Israel? Has he demanded a ceasefire on humanitarian grounds?

What do you think Trump is going to change? No more weapons? No more funding?

Trump has previously stated he wants Israel to hurry up and get it over with? What do you has changed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,367 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

I could just turn it around and point to all the failings of Biden, who has been in charge the last 16 months and we could go around in circles.

At no stage did I defend or excuse the comments made by Trump or defend his decision to move the Embassy. I noted that Biden didn't bother to reverse the decision if he thought it was so bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,049 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

The reason why Trump won is that voters decided that lying, cheating, fraud, insurrection, stealing classified documents was fine with them.

HC was blamed before, now its Harris turn. The truth is people voted for Trump. Voters made that decision.

There is nothing inherently wrong with Harris. Well except she is a woman, and a democrat. That was always going to count against her.

One of the reasons many people felt Trump couldn't win was where he would gain new voters. Well he did. So people saw exactly who he us and decided that that was what best represented them and how they see the US.

The only people to be held accountable for Trump winning is those that support him

Trump will of course adopt an American first approach, continuing the Biden policy.

It seems that he's bored of the issue and it wouldn't surprise me if he was against the level of funding going to Israel. He will of course remain fiercely pro Israel, just like Biden.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,451 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Of course you did and pretending otherwise is fooling no one paying attention.

Why dont you ever turn around a d point to all the failings of Trump and the Republican party in Congress with regard to the region?

Must have missed your criticisms of the Embassy move.

Care to point to those posts?

    Where are they?

Cos if they dont exist it is pretty conclusive proof you dont give a damn about peace in the region and are just expressing 'concern' as a stick to criticse Democrats.

Trying to downplay it as trivial given its significance at the time is a dead giveaway.

And then trying to both sides it by spreading the blame on Biden for not overturning Trumps partisan act?

Much more significant decision for Biden to try to reverse such a mess.

Ditto for Biden when landed with Trumps mess in Afghanistan and a deal Trump signed, effectively surrendering to the Taliban and completely undermining the US position there.

Yeah don't ever see you condemning Biden for sending over the weapons.

Is this your idea of debate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,451 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Biden and the Democrats are operating within usual US policy parameters. Left to manage the situation they would urge ceasefire and restraint without being seen to leave Israel isolated.

You can criticise that but not when you pretend the Republicans arent sitting like hawks on their shoulders screaming for a pro Israel policy.

So I dont see you ever condemning Trump for egging on Netanyahu?

Or members of his party in Congress for voting to send weapons to Israel?

It is only ever Democrats isnt it?

You were the one who popped onto the thread claiming to be concerned about civilians and peace in the region.

    Not me.

So the entire charade is utterly convincing isnt it?

Anyone who genuinely was concerned for the region would be critical of actors on both sides of the US spectrum.

It is obviously just a stick you are using to criticise Democrats, nothing more. My idea of debate includes calling out such a transparent charade in posts.

I haven't criticised Trump or the Republicans because they aren't in office the past 16 months! It's quite simple. Once Trump takes office, then the criticism shifts to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,687 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

It is a trend we are seeing all over the world. People are voting for charismatic candidates. Even if that person has been shown to be a liar, a cheat. Fraud is forgiven because people want to "stick it to the man". They like people who "get away with it", and they like straight talking people. By straight talking, I refer to not using big words.

As a result people gravitate towards Donald, Boris Johnson, Nigel Farrage, Javier Milei in Argentina. You could argue Trump got some cues from Silvio Berlusconi.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,451 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

Simple in this case being simplistic and wrong.

Another post demonstrating a basic and fundamental lack of understanding of US political system.

Firstly, there is no rule as you seem to think, that an Opposition politicians comments are without consequence and immune from criticism. They can influence events especially where there is strong chance they will win next election. So of course they should be subject to criticism and scrutiny.

Secondly, Trump is the head of the Republican Party. They have been in office in the last 18 months in the House.

Here are Republicans pushing Biden to send more support to Israel
