My NI car is taxed, insured and MOT'd. I do not display any of these on the car as although we used to, it has not been a requirement for years and we do not even receive a tax disc or an MOT disc any more to display. So if you were to look at my car you would have no idea if it was taxed or MOT'd or not without accessing a database. You can't simply look at a Nordie car and decide its not taxed because it hasn't got a tax disc. This can't be made any clearer.

"Their insurance usually only covers them for 30 days outside their jurisdiction per year, as well."

The 30 days thing is incorrect too, mine has 90 days by default for EU countries (I can purchase more days if needed) but most insurance up here doesn't include Ireland in that total as so many people travel up and down so frequently.

OP should have reported the accident to his insurance immediately irrespective of who / what caused it.

Regarding the 15k estimate to repair van, the insurance will appoint their own assessor and he will assess the cost of repair. He may deem the van a write-off and instead the owner will be paid the current market value of van less the scrap value if owner decided to keep it. I would not be surprised if the van actual value is well under 10k.

All claims whether it be repairs to the van or personal injuries will be dealt with by the insurance company and their lawyers after all this is a big part of their everyday business. Under no circumstances should the OP have any dealings with the claimants be it personally, by phone, e mail etc etc. all queries from third parties should be referred back to the insurance company.

I don't know how on earth people cheat the system with false claims in the first place.

I had a claim about a decade ago, T-Boned at a roundabout by a VW Transporter, both vehicles were written off. Results from MRI a few months later showed severe prolapse of a few discs in lumbar spine.

But because it was an RTC ongoing claim. The absolute rigmarole I had to go through telling the same story to every single doctor, specialist and physio I visited, often spread months apart. I found it hard to remember everything and my case was genuine.

Maybe the OP isn't being forthcoming with the information they're providing on here. Or maybe they are. Who knows

Whether you display tax etc or not is not hte point: it has to be taxed etc, and the authorities (here) should ask & check for it, especially in the case of an RTA.

As for the "The 30 days thing is incorrect too, mine has 90 days by default for EU countries (I can purchase more days if needed) but most insurance up here doesn't include Ireland in that total as so many people travel up and down so frequently." So you're saying your insurance covers 90 days in EU, except to the RoI ? And that's explicitly written in it ?

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Yes, exactly this, but its a NI thing not a UK wide thing. My 90 days EU * allowance is for driving outside UK / Ireland. There are some policies that are limited to 30 or 60 days (I always try to find one for 90) but again there is probably an agreement in there that means the 30 / 60 days limit does not apply in Ireland. All policies are different, but mine have been like this for a long time now.

I had assumed that cars insured in Ireland had a similar clause that allowed unlimited travel up North ?

*I say EU but thats not strictly correct, it is most EU countries and Switzerland, though some eg Czechia I am not covered for.

OP i was in a similar situation. OH was driving. Car rolled forward and touched the car in front while in traffic. Now what i mean is there foot slipped off the brake pedal and it went forward. Automatic Car. Anyway they rang me and i said take photos of it. There was some paint stripped off the other persons bumper and no damage to my car. They swapped numbers and said we would pay for the damage. Next day they had a claim in for damages. I rang them and she said her friend had suffered neck damage. i laughed to myself and hung up. I rang the insurance company and explained the situation and sent them the photos and did filled out the report. Honestly. They sent an assessor to look at my car and the other persons car. He told me they will fight it. Times had changed and they dont pay out anymore. He would be very suprised if she gets any compo.

Anyway thats was 3 years ago. She dropped her claim a year ago or the time limit ran out. The insurance company paid €300 to fix the other car. That was it. Luckily i had no claims protection so my insurance didnt go up but i cant shop around for 5 years.

IMO let the insurance do the work. Fill out the forms honestly and see where it ends up. If they are scamming they will be found out. And if they are genuine they will get what they are entitled too.
