Rapping in Irish, a bit weird but it works

Wasn't listening and the playlist isn't up yet, but I'm guessing it was Kneecap?

Wonder if Ray received a slap on the wrists for this from the powers that be. I say that as a big fan of the boys too, they have my full support.

Wasn't Kneecap, forget what his name is.

Chunky rifferage from Mr. R. Gallagher. 😎

Been down at the Rory Gallagher festival in Ballyshannon a few times, it's great couldn't make it this year, apparently it's not guaranteed to take place next year, rising costs and that, hope they can sort it out.

He's playing some really lively stuff, glad I'm not trying to sleep listening to this.

Only getting to listen again properly recently due to a change in work/life commitments.

I've found Ray nice and listenable to and plays a good variety but a lot of long instrumental type stuff 6/10.

Aoife obviously has a good knowledge of music due to her family connections and plays a fair amount of folk and Irish artists which is my kind of thing 9/10.

Loah (does she think she's back in the pirate days and can't give her full name in case they'll be raided?) does nothing for me. She seems to be pressing random buttons on Spotify and reading out whatever it says on the relevant artist's biography. 1/10.

As an aside, I switched over to Radio 1 Extra one night to escape Loah only to find it's now a simulcast of Late Date. When did that start and why? It used to have good documentary and Radio 4 programmes on after midnight.

Great having Cathal back, really enjoying his selections recently.

I wonder what the figures for Late Date is Tom Dunne on newstalk are like? Listened to Tom for years and years, then around the time our first daughter was born in 2020 I found myself listening to Cathal more and more... went back to Tom Dunne for the last few weeks when Cathal was off....both quality shows.

From the last post....Ray gets a 10/10 from me, he's perfect for the weekends.

Not a fan of the Aoife Scott shows at all....it ends uo just being like one of Fiachnas old shows.

Loah is interesting for a change now and then

Cathal no doubt is an RTE staffer, seems to be off a fair bit.

He's only on 4 nights mon to thur now.

No offence to the guy, I like him but along with John kelly on Lyric, and the lads and ladies on RTE Gold cathal must have the cushiest job on Irish radio.

And the way he says 'record' - he pronounces it "rekerd" ………a la ol' blue eyes in "My way"…

I wonder if he is talking about a record in a different context (such as the guinness book of records) would he pronounce it the "guinness book of rekerds"? 😁

Either Aoife is playing Mike Denver or I'm somehow picking up Mid West Radio.

and if she is, what's the harm in Radio 1 playing some country & irish ??

that genre of music has been fully ignored by Radio 1 since the late 90s, RNaG play some but that's about it.

Never hear that type of thing outside of local stations

I’m sure he’s played on Rising Time

"that type of thing ……." is hugely popular with audiences of all ages and gives employment to lots of hardworking people involved in the Irish country music industry.

Probably for the weekend thats in it, with those gigs in the Phoenix Park.

so there needs to be a relatively new american singer playing in dublin, so that Irish country acts like mike denver get played on the national broadcaster??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,577 ✭✭✭RoTelly

No offence but Irish Country and Western is very niche and there is a real love it and hate it view of the genre.

My mam comes from a large family her young siblings love IC&W but she and her old siblings are Showbands, Elvis and The Beatles.

In the 2010s for some reason it gain traction in the midlands, I suspect due to family influences.

Both TG4 (actually most of the stuff given to it by RTÉ) and RnaG provide national coverage to the genre while nearly every local radio station outside Dublin has a show. I think Mid-west Radio is behind the TV shows on a Satellite platform over the years.

    ______

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

It's not on tonight, Caravan Radio till 12, then RTE Gold till 5:30.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 169 ✭✭No Bills

That's strange. Nobody available to cover at short notice perhaps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭amlinopta

Aoife Scott presented Friday and Saturday, didn't say anything about Sunday at the end. Whole thing was like amateur hour, jingles playing out in the middle of the news etc. Ray must be either away or filling in for Creedon but they should have been able to find someone else.

Those gigs in the Phoenix part might have been the reason for a no show last night...double booked holidays maybe?? It happens.

I recall Lillian being drafted in at short notice on occasions like this before...she let everyone know during the show how last minute it all was!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,951 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

i'm sure lillian did…. she seems to be one for adding some quips about the goings on behind the scenes on the shows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,080 ✭✭✭RINO87

Lillian in tonight as it happens.

I think Cathal mentioned his partner being in the final stages of pregnancy recently, hope all is well

Must be the fourth week of Ray being off, beginning to miss Floyd Cramer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,888 ✭✭✭pappyodaniel

Bloody teachers and their ridiculously long school holidays. 😉

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,080 ✭✭✭RINO87

Lillian played Floyd when she was in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 540 ✭✭✭gluppers

The show's become a little bit of a love in recently, with Aoife and Loah both having their tunes played by one stand in, and then Loah last night playing a lot of some icelandic chap. Bring back Val
