I'd love to know how he came to the conclusion he was "mugged"

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,522 ✭✭✭leath_dub

It was something he attributed to Sinead O'Connor

She (supposedly) said to him: "Sometimes you are mugged by God in a hoodie"

I know some people wouldn’t be satisfied until Tubs was declared a bankrupt, living on handouts, hitting the bottle, and having nothing left to live for. Even then their own happiness and satisfaction would only be fleeting.

Turns out he got back up on the horse almost immediately.

I think that bothers some people.

It's a strange one how the new daily weekday Virgin show will be broadcast at the same time on Dublin's Q102.

Is it just 'relayed' from Virgin or will he be 'actively' including Q102 listeners in his guests / content / links ?

Will any of his links be modified to suit Q102 (which is done a lot in UK regional networked stations)?

Will he be addressing this audience as his "listeners at home"? - referring to them as in "Dublin", or in "Ireland" ?

Or will he totally ignore them and focus on his Virgin UK audience ?

a combination of voice tracking some shorter elements of the show in advance plus clever use of what we called tape delay in the old days could work technically. It’ll take a good bit of work and effort from the start though

Not strange at all. Most UK radio stations team up for certain shows. I remember a few years ago it happened for the charts shows

AFAIK virgin radio UK isn't available here at all, TuneIN shows a few sister stations, notably Virgin Radio Turkie

Virgin Radio UK is available here for free on satellite, manually tuneable.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,464 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

    We all know that.

I meant strange as in its the first time a UK radio station show has been broadcast by an Irish radio station, at the same time.

I’ll be tuning into the show on the Roberts to see if he can channel some of the spirit of Wogan.

No - shows on Atlantic 252 were only broadcast on one station - not re-broadcast on any other station

Would generally imply though that he considers that his RTE role was stolen from him, which is of course only true in his imagination.

The only reason he lost his job in RTE was he didn't have the brains to keep his mouth shut and blamed RTE and everyone but himself and Noel on the eve of his return.

Mugged, yeah, the only ones that were mugged were the license fee payers.

He does love to bring up the dead so he might try to summon Wogan.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

Tubridy, to me, is the embodiment of the Peter Principle.

"The Peter principle states that a person who is competent at their job will earn a promotion to a position that requires different skills. If the promoted person lacks the skills required for the new role, they will be incompetent at the new level, and will not be promoted again.[1] If the person is competent in the new role, they will be promoted again and will continue to be promoted until reaching a level at which they are incompetent. Being incompetent, the individual will not qualify for promotion again, and so will remain stuck at this final placement or Peter's plateau"

no that was the same station broadcast from the UK, to Ireland and UK.

Virgin and Q102 are different stations

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,461 ✭✭✭KildareP

They're not that different, they're both personality driven music stations and both follow a Hot AC playlist format - and I expect that's what will largely account for the extra 2-hours per day over his RTÉ gig.

At a simple level, take his existing RTÉ show format and segments, but with 4-5 songs, an ad-break or two, news headlines and a competition between each segment. It'd be very easy to make that work across two different brands, if they wanted to get creative they could even have him doing a localised segment on one station while the other was in music.

From a business perspective though, his Q102 Dublin-only audience will be significantly smaller than that which he would have access to on national RTÉ, while his Virgin Radio audience potential will completely dwarf that of RTÉ's.

Q102 will be to Virgin Radio what Virgin Media TV here (note: no connection to Virgin Radio) is to ITV when carrying their live shows (that is, the Irish audience are barely even acknowledged!).

Here he was The Toyman, at least in his own mind. Over there he will just be a toy man.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,477 ✭✭✭Bobson Dugnutt

It doesn’t look like there will be too many active “hate listeners” based on the responses so far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,461 ✭✭✭KildareP

It's very common in other markets - the UK (Greatest Hits Radio broadcasts on a number of "heritage" local brands, the former Network Chart Show carried on non-Global stations as well as Capital and Heart), France/Belgium (FUN Radio), and most of the US iHeart Radio network is largely live syndicated breakfast and drive programming across a multitude of individual local station brands.

It's the first example we're seeing here in Ireland on FM, yes, but it's far from new or unusual elsewhere.

(Q102/FM104 have been promoting a localised version of TalkSport for several years now on their apps so it's not even new for Wireless Group Ireland)

Looks like he took a huge pay cut when he joined Virgin, rumours 50-80k wage.

Will not be listening. Never listened to him. Won't start now.

He's full of it and just putting on a false face for anyone to see.

Given half a chance he would be back in rte. The man has no shame whatsoever.

It was shown in the way he responded to the allegations from the beginning. His comments about just wanting to get back to 'work'. Yet didn't have the intelligence to keep his mouth shut and instead had to open it to try and convince everyone he was in the right.

It's his lack of morals and his big mouth that have him in London playing music on some radio station.

“It's his lack of morals and his big mouth that have him in London playing music on some radio station”.

Yes, his lack of scruples and talent have landed him a primetime national radio show in one of the most competitive markets on planet Earth. Where did it all go wrong for Tubbs 😂 there are people who spend decades trying to get a crack at a gig like this
