the planning enforcement section of Fingal County Council have received a number of complaints RE 2023 passenger numbers and “the complaints are currently being processed “ according to the council. Business Post yesterday.

Not sure how this will play out and was very surprised when they issued an enforcement notice last year over the night flights, so they may be stupid enough to issue another one for this. Time will tell.

They go on as if it's the end of the world. They moved in next to an international airport. Don't know if they underestimated how busy Dublin is or what, of if they moved in before the north runway opened - but it was built on the existing airport campus, if you can hear the noise off of the north runway you could definitely already hear the noise off of the south runway. Besides the north runway is closed for 8 hours at night, which is the recommended sleep time and even at that, there are not many departures from 10-11pm

16 Ryanair routes destined for Dublin moved to Italy instead due to arbitrary cap. Very disappointing for Ireland.

I'm no fan of the cap, but Ryanair move aircraft around all the time and always manage to find someone else to blame for it.

    Life ain't always empty.

Well, they can't put them in Dublin, because Dublin is full due to the cap. That is a fact. Ryanair make huge money from the Irish market as we are a captive market (Island) and spend well on flights and on board. They are not going to put planes here that can't be used due to this ridiculous cap.

”Mr Jacobs said that Dublin Airport is speaking with airlines who want to fly directly to Dublin every week, but added that a planning cap of 32 million passengers a year on terminals 1 and 2 makes this a challenging situation.”

2024/2025 could have been a very interesting couple of years for route and connectivity development had there been no cap.

FR always reduce their schedule over the winter months, and on a few occasions have announced that it was due to DAA charges or similar.

  • Registered Users Posts: 288 ✭✭dublin12367

that post above was regarding a summer 2024 routes and not the usual winter reduction.

You are thinking of when they announced last year they were removing the 737max base from Dublin and pulling routes for the winter period as they usually do and blamed this over charges in Dublin rather than the actual fact it was the summer season coming to and end.

Hainan are going 4 weekly from the 2nd of June till the 29th of September with the A333, extra flights operating on Sundays and Thursdays as well as the already planned Saturdays and Tuesdays

Luckily we can still get a small amount of growth

Hadn’t heard that. Wonder if this is down to EI cutting Gatwick? They had only planned two weekly for the summer 2024 this year and did want to increase it to 4 and couldn’t due to the cap. Gatwick has since been cut, and although the ei aircraft will be used on extra frequencies to Rome etc, the passengers numbers will still be down when compared to last year as EI to Gatwick had so many rotations. Such cuts give a limited scope to expand other areas.

Available to book on the Hainan website now good news all round.

Frustrating to think how many potential new routes to exciting long haul (or even short haul) destinations have been lost or postponed because of this ridiculous cap debacle...

  • Registered Users Posts: 288 ✭✭dublin12367

Look at Manchester. The list of new routes there for this year is growing by the day and likely a few more long haul to be announced in the coming weeks there. This country is a disgrace turning business like this away as no doubt there would be a similar trend here had there been no cap. The fact fingal have issued an enforcement notice regarding the cap last year clearly shows which side their bread is buttered and it’s not the daas side!

The cap is a disgrace, but why didnt Daa apply for the increase earlier ? Also all of these airkujes, only approaching the daa now and not last year ? Id say the daa are hamming it up to put pressure on government...

They did, to 35m in 2019, and then withdrew due to COVID - it would never have been approved while flight numbers were cratering. That ruled out applying until passenger numbers were clearly recovering to pre-COVID levels, which was in 2022.

Applying for 35m in 2022 would have been farcical (particularly with how slow ABP had got in the interim), so a new application with all the new environmental, traffic etc planning had to be done.

again, I have to ask , why in gods name, is this matter of national importance, being delayed for years? why does the Dail just not immediately scrap the insane cap?

  • Registered Users Posts: 573 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

I'm old enough to remember the embarrassment of the government inflicted Shannon stopover for all transatlantic flights from Dublin. You'd look back and question how that was ever allowed to happen. This is as similarly embarrassing!

Is it wierd that the local authority can take such far reaching and draconian action against the national airport, especially in an island nation? I just can't imagine that the Dutch government would allow Haarlemmermeer municipality hobble the operation of schipol airport. Same in Copenhagen, Stockholm etc. We're a small country with one quasi hub international airport that we literally depend on for outside connectivity, it just doesn't make any practical sense.

This was asked and discussed recently on the DUB Infrastructure thread. To avoid duplication, I'd suggest that's where this discussion be taken.

Anyone flown with them before? I did a dummy booking and the prices are good. It would be a bit of a novelty to get on a plane in Dublin and land in China without having to connect on the way.

Yeah, they're grand - food and service fine and did the Dublin to Beijing flight in about 8.5 hours or so a few years ago due to a serious tail wind!

Hmmm wonder if they overfly Russia! Could make for an "interesting" diversion 😯

    Life ain't always empty.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,810 ✭✭✭EchoIndia

Yes, they overfly Russia, as do all Chinese carriers flying to Europe.

Just saw Tui has announced a major increase in services for Summer 2025 including flights to Melbourne, Florida. Find that one interesting as it will be a first TUI flies transatlantic from DUB except for its once off CUN Flights in the summer. Also Larnaca in Cyprus and Enfidha in Tunisia have been added to the schedule. Great news for DUB despite efforts to get more flights with the cap.

Potential for confusion there if people aren't too attentive when searching on the internet
