Yeah, none of this should be regarded too seriously.

He kept the audience and added to it, great presenter, good on RTÉ for getting on board. I think this hate listening is just bring down this site, completely waste of time anyway. I don't see why you might see him as establishment, Ryan was good all the same you probably like the rest of them have a problem with him too, look at him off there living up in London, you just hate listening all the time.

    Boards just isn't relevant.

This is how I look at it, you've offered the idea that you should not criticise a presenter because you don't like them but you then go on to criticise those other presenters in almost the same way as others have criticised the predecessor in that role. You then tell everyone that boards is not relevant.

Thank you for recognising that I have something to say on this subject, I hope my opinion is based on facts that are available and when I do suggest something that could have happened, I make it clear its purely an assumption on my part.

I am passionate about this subject and I believe we have been let down by our public service broadcaster. Almost everything that they have said about TV production and broadcast over the years is nearly always an excuse not to do something, meaning over the years we've be left with a bland public service broadcaster and by extension bland commercial broadcasters.

I agree with some of the wages are most likely in line with industry standards but there are plenty in RTÉ are are being over paid for their roles. I will also agree there are times when you will want to keep a high profile presenter as they are bring in an audience. However, these are few and far between. This is largely down to RTÉ's inability to develop new upcoming presenters and sticking to establishment presenters.

There is no way that a Gerry Ryan type presenter could develop in RTÉ today, or any new presenter (I wish 2FM luck in their search but that should have happened 2 decades ago).

RTÉ were right to let go of Pat Kenny, I'd imagine even if RTÉ had offered him more money he would have been better severed going to Newstalk. His role in newstalk has always been to rise the programmes surrounding his show, and he has done this to great effect, however I'd argue that Newstalk is in trouble because there is no one coming up. Their morning show presenters and the hard shoulder presenter are just carbon copies of non-entities that give the pretence of being curmudgeons but really Ivan Yeats and George Hook are a loss to the station. I imagine that when Pat leaves Newstalk will be in a difficult position. I see no one from RTÉ that they might nab for that role, nor do I see any one in the commerical sector, potentially Matt Copper but he's getting old too. And you can forget about the finger wagging, glossy, lip smacking, hipster, we know best, wannabe Group Chat Gang from VMTV.

RTÉ certainty shouldn't have given into Ray D'Arcy's demands.

But I digress, in essence most people wouldn't care about the presenters pay or executives pay if RTÉ had done a good job. This "nothing burger" of a scandal would be such had RTÉ actually provided a service over the years, but they didn't, they believe their own lies about almost everything and still took their annual August break, rather than trying to get the audience on board.

    So no I won't stop. :/

I will leave it at that, thanks again.

I only heard a small excerpt of Callans interview with Alistair Campbell and had to laugh at his constant interruptions to try to get Campbell to agree that Tony Blair made a mistake over Iraq.

And no, I’m not going into five pages on what peoples views. were on that…….Soz.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,589 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Funny, I heard somebody constantly trying to deny what we all know, Tony and Alastair made a mistake over Iraq.

Thought it was a balanced interview myself, not everything Al done being portrayed or called out as mistaken or bad. Callan is a reasonable interviewer in that sense.

Yeah, funny Iraq is rarely in the news now for gassing folk en masse and other stuff.

Big mistake there in fairness, people would like to hear more headlines like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,589 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

So you are in the minority that thinks Blair didn't make a mistake. Ok, that's fine but that isn't the job of an interviewer to conform to what you believe. Soz.

I have yet to hear this interview. Campbell is pretty canny even for the best interviewers. Tough spot for Callan, you get stick for asking about Iraq and stick for not asking about it. I think Campbell has a pretty solid canned response at this stage. But I will give Callan kudos for asking the question. I do not think the previous host would have asked the question.

@Bellbottoms d’arcy was given a €250k contract, which seems to be for 3 more years until 2025, he’s done nothing noteworthy for Radio 1. He should have been offered 150k and told to leave if he wasn’t happy. (I am sure may on here would disagree with 150k).

We don't know if that is how much D'Arcy demanded or how much he was offered. Given that Callan was offered an amount and told RTE would not be negotiating. I suspect the same thing happened with D'Arcy.

I have no idea how they came to a figure of 250k.

It should be lower as should Callans.

Callans salary was one of the first to be offered after the whole fiasco. It set the base rate for everyone else. Callan shouldn't be on anymore the 70-80k. With D'Arcy given 30 years of experience on 150k.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭RoTelly

true, but either way offering €250k to D'Arcy or if they just accepted D'Arcy's offer it shows RTÉ's lack of negotiating skills.

Oliver’s interview with the ploughing champion from Carlow isn’t great. He’s almost taking the piss. I know it’s kind of a niche subject, even for farmers, but still.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭RoTelly

They do and Ray has every right to go on holidays. However seems everyone in RTÉ heads off on holidays in August, I know of few companies that allow most of their staff head off in August, generally you find that it is staggered across June, July and August, but seems RTÉ have august off every year with no explanation.

The Rosise pride parade guy has a bit of an opinion of himself. It’s kind of painful listening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Sorry Bob that rational is BS and purely an excuse. News happens without politicians, judges and lawyers.

And I'd say it is very odd that any company would take August off on top of giving extra holiday during the year.

It doesn't save any money it just puts RTÉ staff in a lap of luxury that other broadcasters don't get.

Look I've always found it funny that a huge number of people complain about school holidays, when they themselves possibly have a 40 AL in their contract and are paid probable twice as much as a school teacher.

You'd think RTÉ had hundreds of hours of TV to repeat, how could they, its the same auld stuff the repeat over the course of the year, it wasn't all that good first time round.

RTÉ have a staff of 1800 people, and they want to cut this back! They have a pretend 24 hour news channel.

And it doesn't just apply to news, their daily / not daily / daily show stops broadcasting from May until October every year, 4 months.

Correct Ro, it’s purely BS. It’s purely suiting themselves and fohhrk the public who are funding a PSB.

And to come back to the 9 o’clock show I agree Callan was taking the p1ss out of the Carlow lad who

In fairness was well able for him, and this after excoriating Joe Biden for ten minutes !!

This lad (Callan) will step out of line at some stage and I can see it coming down the tracks, when I don’t know ,but he’s going to go too far at some stage.

    How so?

I didn't catch the show. But at this stage Fanning must have enough connections to be handed tickets to any show in Ireland he wants.

Callan had to pull in his head a bit after this mornings show intro piece.

Went a bit over the top on Kamala Harris and drew a bit if ire on the text line.

He tried to gloss it off but folk are copping on to him slowly but surely.

So, have a go at Trump but Harris is out of bounds?

RTE advertise this as; 'A sharp hour of entertainment…'

I'd wager he is employed to give 'his' opinion on current events and public figures.

If they (texters) don't like 'sharp' then they can't say they were not adequately forewarned. Callan thinks Harris is boring, and Trump is a clown, so what, not exactly alone in those opinions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,589 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

As he now has more listeners than Tubridy did a year ago and pre scandal, I don't think that advice is going to be taken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,331 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Francie, the guy was caught out and posters re acted, he made a half hearted attempts to bleat about "balance"

and threw in some guff about Trump as if to justify his stance.

If he is going to earn a crust on John Q Taxpayers eurons he might think about the wisdom of using the public airwaves to vent his bias.

If you are going to have a go, have a go at all sides, its that simple and the public are not fools as evidenced by the texts

    to 51551.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,589 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

You trying to say he doesn't have a go at Trump or Biden? 😁😁😁

I think he triggered you and the texters, he and the producers of his 'sharp hour' will be delighted. Well done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,331 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

I’m not “trying to say” that Francis and you know it.

I’m dealing with what actually happened…..Callan went for Kamala strongly in his opening ‘riff’.

The public saw what was happening and let him know via 51555, then he tried to weasel out with some

half hearted defence about balance. That’s what happened Mr B, you don’t have to make stuff up.

    Accept the facts compadre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,589 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

He was laughing at the texts.
Did you even listen to the programme?

A cupla people text into sharp radio programme shocker. 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,230 ✭✭✭RoTelly

BTW the chair of RTÉ is a fan, from what I hear. Good luck to Callan, won't be listening myself but then Tubs views on politics were never all that relevant either.
