It wasn't, the DA-62 had been in Shannon and already flew a mission by the time of your post

R116 just gone from UHG to Shannon for fuel, Dublin to Aran Islands then UHG, are these new aircraft supposed to have the same range or similar? The 92 would easily do Dub/Aran/UHG & back to Dub without going to Shannon for fuel, oh well.

I'd say they are supposed to have the range specified in the tender, to be honest. And they couldn't give a flying fiddlers about what a Sikorsky could do. Below is a radius of 220 miles from Weston. Oh look, it can do what it is supposed to do 🙄

R116 just gone from UHG to Shannon for fuel,

From the old adage about the 3 most useless things in aviation.

    Runway behind you.

    Altitude above You

    And

    Fuel in the bowser.

Sooner be looking at it than for it.

    Probably the prudent decision.

I think the more pertinent question would have been "why send the Dublin helo?".

Why send one of the furthest away helicopters, especially when Shannon and Sligo helo's were available?

AW189 could have done the flown route without refueling, it was a technical stop probably on the back of EI-IRR and EI-IRS swapping locations on 10th Oct, or maintenance of EI-IRO.

It was sent specifically on that job so it could fly to Shannon afterwards. Most likely a crew swap as they are currently completing cross training placements at each base, or maintenance staff for EI-IRO which is in Dublin and hasn't flown the last few days due to maintenance.

I'm surprised @Psychlops didn't expect top cover for the medevac.
