Drag by default, like burlesque shows or any other form of adult entertainment, is an overtly sexual display.

I've been to Pride events in Dublin where drag artists make no shame about the sexualised displays / acts they put forward. I think that's inappropriate for children. And I don't agree with drawing a line between acceptable and unacceptable sexualised acts for children. That's a quite frankly bizarre debate. In no other safeguarding debates do we draw that kind of nuance.

I think a blanket ban is needed to safeguard children - irrespective of whether the performer is a drag artist or burlesque dancer.

What's amazing to me is that rather than support DeSantis' intention to protect children, people are just looking for any reason whatsoever to condemn the man.

This is what happens when adherence to ideology matters more than common sense and ordinary morality.

A blanket cancellation, ban? But isn't cancel culture "woke?"

The decision came Wednesday after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed HB 1438, which holds businesses accountable ”if the establishment admits a child to an adult live performance.

Sorry @Overheal, but I see nothing wrong with what DeSantis signed into law here.

What I find far more alarming is how you are trying to defend the position that establishments should allow the admittance of "a child to an adult live performance".

How can you possibly defend that?

Safeguarding children matters more than some adherence to ideology that some adults believe in.

All they had to do was make it kid and family friendly. It seems that was bridge to far so they binned it to make Santis look bad. Their agenda is very transparent

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,963 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I wasn't asking you for your opinion, I was challenging you to prove your claim that it "specifically" targets "drag" which it does not. You won't find the word Drag in there once, for example. I already am perfectly aware you will see no fault in anything Ron does, He's your Breath of Fresh Air TM.

"An adult live performance" any performance, live, by an adult? That's most shows and events.

Actually you're right; the law is better than that - it includes protecting children from sexualised adult performances generally.

And I see nothing wrong with that, too.

But you seem to have taken issue with it. Care to explain why?

That's all Pride Tampa had to do.

But because they wanted sexualised drag performances in front of children, they cry victimhood and felt obliged to cancel the entire event.

But, but, but...apparently Ron DeSantis is the evil, hateful man here.

Look, as I said before, it says more about the event organisers and their supporters than it does about DeSantis himself.

All they had to do was make it kid and family friendly.

    Already was.

Rapidash never once outraged about the event last year, even though he's whatabouted about maybe the same 2 drag incidents for the past 2 years, dozens of times.

    You said "specifically" 🤣

If the event this year were family-friendly, they wouldn't have cancelled the event by definition.

Clearly, there was something at the event which violated the new law - a law that, let's be clear here, seeks to protect children from sexualised drag performances. That's all the law intends to do.

Throwing up a YouTube video from last year doesn't negate any of the above, either.

I repeat what I said earlier: the opponents of this law signed by Ron DeSantis are arguing in favour of the position that children should be in attendance at sexualised drag performances.

For all the moralising and so on, that's what it boils down to.

But apparently Ron DeSantis is the bad guy here.

Are Dame Edna Everage or Lily Savage sexy? And if so why?

I don't even think Ron DeSantis has ever heard of either of these two performers.

Nor has it anything to do with the law he signed in Florida.

So, we're back to the usual homophobia I take it. Fine for GOP politicians to groom and molest children but drag shows are somehow the end of the world.

We sat again for an hour and a half discussing maps and figures and always getting back to that most damnable creation of the perverted ingenuity of man - the County of Tyrone.

I'm sure, in your head, you imagine they are up to no good, but there is no evidence of that.

You have yet to throw up so much as a youtube video to try and demonstrate your allegations that it was not family-friendly, by contrast.

You have yet to defend your claim that the law "specifically targets" "drag artists" and "sexualized drag shows" any sober reading of the text makes it clear that any adult event, whether there is any drag at it or not, can at any moment be deemed susceptible under this law.

You have yet to defend your claim that the law "specifically targets" "drag artists" and "sexualized drag shows" any sober reading of the text makes it clear that any adult event, whether there is any drag at it or not, can at any moment be deemed susceptible under this law.

Let me be clear @Overheal, lest there by any ambiguity with my position here: I fully support that which I bolded.

Yes, I agree with the full text of the law; that children should not be exposed to sexualised adult performances, whether they include sexualised drag performances or other sexualised adult entertainment performances. Whether they are gay or straight, I don't care.

You have yet to defend why you think it's a good thing that children should be in attendance to sexualised drag performances? The most extreme possible position to adopt. You defend it, but fail to explain why.

Tampa Pride cancelled their own event, presumably on the basis that sexualised drag performances in front of children was part of the schedule.

Thank god they cancelled it, if that's the case.

And that's a direct consequence of this legislation. More power to it.

Let more US states follow suit as far as I'm concerned.

Half a million Americans migrated to Florida from other states since 2021, the largest numbers from the most "progressive" states New York and California. Florida is the #1 state destination by far within the US and the #2 state for interntional migration.

But according to the Irish experts, Florida is a cesspool and the worst US state to live in. From experts who have never lived there.

I have a new definition of woke for such experts: "the willingness to suspend reality to make oneself feel good".

I honestly don't know why anyone engages with Esky. They will just delete their account and start again when their visible posts are too much to defend.

Bum-boy comments by Boris Johnson being hand-waved because they claim they are gay.

Correct , population and business are moving to Florida en masse. In fact Red States are seeing the most population growth as people flee crime ridden Democrat run cities

    All you have are presumptions.

You have yet to defend why you think it's a good thing that children should be in attendance to sexualised drag performances? The most extreme possible position to adopt. You defend it, but fail to explain why.

Pics or I never said it. For someone so eager to accuse others of "sleight of hand" that's bold of you to try and twist my arguments about consistency, cancel culture and wokism, to what you've written there.

If you aren't defending that position (that in bold), it means you support this legislation by DeSantis.

    Connect the dots for me?

I don't support the legislation, it is flawed and overly broad, and it does not "specifically" target "drag" as you previously tried to argue - while trying to defend that Ron DeSantis was not canceling drag, just 'specifically target it' etc.

Neither source credits DeSantis or his policies for this perennial trend. Hmm.

Dave Chappelle returned to San Francisco Thursday night with a surprise show at the Masonic Auditorium. He didn’t like what he’s seen in the City by the Bay.

“What the f—k happened to this place?” he asked, according to SFGATE’s review of the show.

Chappelle has long been performing in San Francisco, so his observations aren’t casual. During his set, he told of someone defecating on the sidewalk in front of the Indian restaurant in the Tenderloin that he was about to dine at.

The City has now become “half ‘Glee,’ half zombie movie,” he contended, adding that the whole city has become the Tenderloin. .

    “Y’all [N-words] need a Batman!” he said.

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,963 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I don't think Chappelle's stand up argument evidences anything here either. Nothing in your post about DeSantis. He's not the governor of California.

Yet earlier you quoted an event in Missouri and connected it to DeSantis.

DeSantis is not the governor of Missouri either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 81,963 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

Which I did not dispute you calling out for being such, my apologies for not being specific to Florida when we were getting on a broader tangent about wokism, as you so broadly define and cancel culture which you define as subset of woke.

Great speech by DeSantis in the last few days.

Yes, he's primarily focussing on the so-called "Woke agenda" here, but if he can translate this level of responsible reform to other sectors of the US, he stands a chance of becoming the Republican nominee.

I'd much rather this chap, who is far more sensible and less reckless than Donald Trump, becoming the nominee.

He's getting shown up by a mouse.

This does not bode well for any future political aspirations in high office.

And puts him below Palin in the experience stakes (who was "near russia" ;), he'd be run roughshod over at the international level, at least with trump a bit of preening was needed to expose the belly.

Well, you're probably right. Trump is likely to get the nomination.

But I'd much, much rather DeSantis receive it - however unlikely.
