After a damp morning it turned out a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine.

Nippy out now and down to 3c already. Nice evening to view a bright pass of the Iss at 6.17 west to east.

A blissfully serene night. Not a whisper of wind and a fresh quiet night. Happy!

another winter and another snowfall for Athens, an inevitable consequence of these permanent mid lat anticyclones that now dominate EVERY winter in Western Europe.

Whether climate change is man made or cyclical is a matter of opinion and should not be discussed in this thread but it cannot be ignored.

PS. look at this chart and just remember that nowhere on earth is warming up as much as Svalbard,

Just when we reach the tail end of the winter and not a snowflake to be seen all winter through many southern and eastern areas, this happens every winter. Athens would be in my top 5 list of capitals to go to in search of snow because they get it so regular like clockwork there every winter. Last winter they had at least 3 or 4 decent snow events, I bet next weeks snow in Greece won't be the only one this season either, although admittedly they are getting their first snow a bit later than usual.

looking at the longer range today for February and it's grim stuff. The JMA, CFS and ECM extended all going for a washout, mild Atlantic driven February. Of course the models can all be wrong but many of the early winter forcasts back in November where saying that February would be the mildest most Atlantic driven month of the winter with December being the coldest. Enjoy this dry spell while it lasts, almost 2 weeks here in Meath now without any measurable rainfall which has done wonders in drying out the saturated land.

Not sure about that Gonzo, by the law of averages, we're due some drier weather. Sept - Jan have all been above average rainfall, significantly so at times.

Difficult to answer right now with the models changing so frequently recently. For north-western areas about February 2nd/3th. Central, southern and eastern areas could stay relatively dry up to the middle of February with some south-eastern areas perhaps staying completely dry for the next 2 weeks.

If this verifies it would be a full month without any measurable precipitation for eastern areas.

Pano of the mackerel sky earlier in Dublin which gave a nice red sky after sunset for some, was unlucky here with thicker cloud that came in. First I've seen in a long while.

same here in Meath, dull, damp, chilly, misty and a day to be inside. This January/winter can't end soon enough.

Heavy mist and drizzle in waves today here near Tralee out by the coast, very calm and got up to 9.3C. Hard weather for finishing off the winter jobs topping trees and cutting branches with jackets and hats on and sweating!

Clearing some bit at dusk, could make out the moon overhead as it thins and out over the sea to the NW could see the sky proper .

It was a lovely day in Wicklow today, bright sunshine all morning and sunny spells for the afternoon. Chilly still but I'll take this weather any day in winter.

After a week of not much happening the latest ECM is bland over the next 10 days. If it plays out like that , that’ll be at least 2.5 weeks of nothingness. Many will enjoy it but it’s not my cup of tea. A waste of prime winter time in my opinion.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,006 ✭✭✭mcburns07

Getting married in Scotland the week after next and will quite happily take not much happening 😅

That drizzle and grey cloud all day so depressing. There is actually more visibility tonight than there was during day now its cleared! Hope none of that heavy drizzle tomorrow. Looks like another dull day overhead in the forecast.
