somehow we are going to a tie break in the second set. Not sure why Iga changed her racket on championship point.

2nd set tie break...Swiatek's shot to make it 5-5 😍

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Three Grand Slams a couple of months after turning 21...unreal.

    What a talent.

    What can you say.

Tough for Jabeur but there's no one on Swiateks level currently. Well deserved given the year she had.

3 grand slams at 21 years old, incredible. Doubt she'll have any motivation issues like Osaka had, so if the body holds up it's difficult not to see her winning at least 5 or 6.

Gamesmanship I think, something she's developing a bit of a reputation for recently, but largely getting a pass from the tennis media.

This trophy presentations are awful. Just give the trophies, interview the players and get on with it. Bloody yanks have to drag it out.

The Americans don’t half pull the piss out of these trophy presentations.

Isn’t Iga a three time grand slam champion ?

Winning the US Open is some response from Swiatek after her poor post RG form. I think a lot were worried the bubble had popped and she'd come back down to Earth with inconsistent results. Obviously not the case. Hope she winds down her season now and arrives well rested and motivated in Australia, she'll surely be the hot favourite.

Swiatek just too good. Felt bad for Jabeur though.

Thoughts on tonight? I think the only way Alcaraz loses is if he beats himself or fatigue kicks in. Ruud is obviously very solid but just doesn't have the weapons to trouble a player like Alcaraz. I think he'll need a bad off day from Alcaraz to win.

The fatigue at this stage must be coming close to being a significant leveller though. Three late night 5 setters is massive. Ruud has had a fairly easy run so far. He must be feeling very fresh.

I have this match very even. I think Ruud is being underestimated and I expect Alcaraz to have moments of fatique. Really hope Alcaraz brings it home, he's been the best thing about the tournament.

Ruud needs to get off the back wall when he's facing Alcaraz's second serve. He's doing absolutely nothing with it from back there.

Alcaraz looking mentally, if not physically tired in the 2nd set. Poor shot selection, serve isn’t as dominant as it was. The lack of mileage on Ruud may be the important factor

Wow, incredible from Alcaraz to gut out that set, was looking quite ominous there for a while. You get the feeling winning that one was much more important for him than Ruud, the fatigue is clearly beginning to catch up. One set away now.

And there it is, a set completely undeserved goes to Alcaraz.

He wins this 4th set easily too .

    What a joke.

Well , get used to him, he will likely dominate for the next 2 decades.

    Tennis truly is dead.

Ruud should have won that set, was playing the better tennis but went to shít in the tiebreak.

Alcaraz needed that 3rd, once he got it he believed

US Open champion and World #1 at 19, f*cking hell!

    Another Emma, or not.........

I think he's the real deal,

I think so too - he's been picking up momentum this year - I was rooting for him to win, but if Ruud had won I wouldn't have minded - some cracking rally's and both players playing super tennis. I was watching in Spain, in the bar, so you can imagine the atmosphere!!!

Alcaraz the right man to win it, he's the natural successor to the big 3, wouldn't have been great for the men's game had Ruud got the No. 1, he's a solid but, not spectacular player, but, for a guy who wasn't really in the conversation for slams just a few months ago, Ruud has done well, making two slam finals and challenging for No. 1 spot, still only 23, seems to be getting the most out of himself, unlike some of the much more heralded players; both Zverev and Tsitsipas have only one slam final each, Medvedev only 3 and Thiem only 4. With Alcaraz now around and Djokovic and Nadal not finished yet, the next gen guys don't look like they'll win many if any more slams

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,624 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Really feel like Alcaraz could hit 30 slams plus unless some new next gens crop up to challenge him. The rest of the tour not going to be at his level at all outside of nadal/djoko

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,130 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

This is the kind of hyperbolic rubbish which is slightly turning me off Alcaraz. Not his fault at all, obviously, but the amount of people anointing him as future GOAT, 30+ slams, and all this crap is very annoying.

Yes, the hype is real. He is the future, and is more than likely going to win multiple slams. But nobody knows that the future can hold, how will he cope with pressure, injuries, fame, etc. Maybe someone will crop up and challenge him like Nadal did to Fed, and Djokovic did to Nadal. Who knows.

Let's not get carried away is all I'm saying.

If people were allowed predict the future things would be very boring though. He's currently the only players in the men's game who has the potential etc to win 10 grandslams. That's what makes him fasconating and why being able to see how is journey goes is the exciting. Once Novak and Nadal retire and the slam race is finished then Alcarez is really the only thing box office about men's tennis. Which is a worry too.
