Is this the start of a new era, when was the last time, there was no Nadal, Djokovic or Federer in a quarter finals of a slam, add to that none of the leading next gen challengers of the last few years (Medvedev, Zverev, Tsitsipas) or Thiem there either, it's a very open tournament now with a glimpse of what the future of men's tennis is going to be like. Will be very strange not to see one of the big names there, feels a bit like the women's, everyone left will feel they have a chance.

Didn't see that upset coming at all. A lot of relieved Djokovic fans out there I'd say 🙂

Oddly enough we're not guaranteed a new champion, Cilic is still in the draw. Difficult to predict who's making the final, but I think it'll be some combination of Kyrgios/Berrettini vs Alcaraz/Sinner. Honestly I think anyone bar Ivashka from the bottom half can make the final.

Kyrgios must be thinking ge szn win this. If he keeps the head he could do. Great win for Tiafoe tonight, thought he had lost it at the start of the fourth set

Weird ranking rules if the No1 has never won a single title.😅

Has happened before on the ATP when Marcelo Rios reached #1 in 1998. As we already know, its happened multiple times on the WTA.

Single slam title? Rios did win titles before 1998

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,410 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Some performance from Tiafoe well deserved Nadal was flat but I thought his experience and battling quality would get him through!

I assumed slams are what BorneTobyWilde was referring to? Cause both Ruud and Alcaraz have obviously won titles.

I think this just shows the dominance of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer over the last decade or more when they were kinda still are hovering up slams and other titles. The rankings at the moment are bit all over the place with Djokovic not allowed play, Nadal being in and out injured, Federer being away (even though I think he would be dropping anyway), the ban on Russian players which meant Medvedev missed Wimbledon, the no points being awarded for Wimbledon and then the rest of the players all being about the same in terms of consistently inconsistent. I won't even mention Kyrgios because he has decided he is only going to play certain parts of the season.

Ruud gets past Berretini fairly easily. Harder work for Alcaraz against Cilic.

I'll be honest and say I've never been as enthusiastic about Jabeur as a lot seem to be, but I'm very impressed with how she's rebounded this tournament after the disappointment of losing Wimbledon. My expectations for her were pretty low coming into New York, but I'd be quite content to see her take the title.

I would be happy to see her win it. She left the Wimbledon title behind her I felt. She’d be playing great all tournament and didn’t do herself justice in the final. She seems like a nice person which helps.

Seconded , seems some sort of alternative universe to suggest he had that much talent. Poor serve and poor forehand

So woman’s draw is swiatek vs Pegula and the winner of that will play the winner of Pliskova and Sabalenka in one semi final and Gauff vs Garcia will play Jabeur in the other.

I wouldn’t he counting out Caroline Garcia either as in the frame to win it all.

The way he knocked Roddick out of Wimbledon couldn't of happened if he had an average game or average ability. If you don't have the ability its not possible to produce a performance like that, you don't have the capability. That was one of the few times, on the big occasion, he played close to his potential

Roddick and all the other players knew what he was capable off, seen him do it for years coming through the ranks. If you watch the match again, Roddick repeatedly motioned to his box there was nothing he could do, asking them what's he supposed to do, Roddick never done it in his many beatings against Federer. He knew when Gasquet hit that vein of form he was unplayable

Federer has repeatedly expressed his disappointment with his attitude and stunted form. Look up what any of the pros have to say about his ability coming through the ranks and why he never evolved, they'd all say he was a very special talent, but had a lax attitude, with little drive. And it caught up with him and most top guys surpassed him, but he arguably had the greatest natural ability of any player to hold a racquet

His backhand, in and of itself, is actually an indictment of his talent, hardest shot in the game and he just hits it naturally, from instinct, no work on it. No other player has ever had the ability or talent to produce natural backhands like that on pure instinct, although Federer not far away admittedly. Its a blind shot, its execution heavily relying on feel/raw talent

Ahh anybody can run hot for a match, picking that one performance is just silly. See Rosol v nadal at wimbeldon.

Huge relief to see Kyrgios out, phew!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,003 ✭✭✭Floppybits

I wasn't expecting that to be honest, thought he would go all the way in this one. The carry on of him after he lost though smashing racquets is childish.

Kyrgios is not going to have a much better chance to win a grand slam, surprised at Khachanov getting so far, to be honest Draper had the beating of him before injury.

Agreed. Really thought this was the time Kyrgios would finally live up to his much-heralded potential. Alas, another chance goes abegging.

On a side note, I must admit that I'm finding this slam a bit underwhelming. Hard to put my finger on it, I suppose the fact that none of the Big3 are in the quarters of a slam for the first time in a long time takes some getting used to. As someone who took comfort in the consistency of the Big3, the chaotic nature of this slam offers an unsettling glimpse into the post-Big3 era - which may take some getting used to! Bit of a WTA feel about it.

I think I'm now up for Tiafoe/Rublev/Sinner to hopefully beat Ruud in the final, just to see Ruud get to #1 without ever winning anything bigger than an ATP 250 event which would just be fúcking ridiculous. Maybe Rublev to win the whole thing just to piss Wimbledon off.

Tiafoe has been terrific here, excellent on serve. Shame he couldn't take those break points in the third set though..

Tiefoe breaks in the 3rd to go 4-3.is Rublev cooked?

Great game. You get the feeling that Sinner will be the type of player who will never have the bottle for the big occasion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,583 ✭✭✭NoviGlitzko

He's Berdych 2.0. Big serve, great baseliner, no personality on court, chokes on his biggest matches. There's nothing wrong with choking, everyone does it. Just it's what made the top 3, with their mental side of the game the very elite. I think Sinner will win multiple slams though.

That game was one of the best I've seen. Alcaraz will take a hell of a beating. Hope he (or Tiafoe) goes all the way from here. Dunno what it is about Ruud, just can't seem to warm to him. Jabeur on the women's side would be nice to see win after her Wimbledon disappointment.

Given how crazy the WTA can be at times, who'd have thought we'd end up with a #1 vs #5 final! Really happy with that, and don't particularly mind who wins. Either result is good for tennis, either the world #1 will win her third grand slam title or the #5 will back up her Wimbledon run (and subsequent disappointment) by winning her first. I suppose I might be leaning towards supporting Ons, losing two grand slam finals on the trot would be a tough pill to swallow.

If you include Wimbledon, it's really the No. 1 vs 2 in the final, can't remember the last time that happened, be good to get some consistency in the women's game, just as it looks like the the men's might be starting to go the other way!
