Despite a slight 4% jump in births for 2021 the birth rate in Ireland has witnessed a sharp 22% drop since 2011 according to newly released CSO statistics.

All in all statistics reveal a social convergence between Ireland and the rest of Europe.

A direct product of social atomisation and the liberal deluge, such trendlines in any other time would be regarded as a looming demographic threat pointing to wider existential malaise. 

While nations of the East both acknowledge and seek to heal the demographic chasm through pro-family policies Ireland still remains in the wilderness in deluding itself that migration can act as a bandaid to a society losing the will to propagate itself.

The culture of this country is heading for a terminal decline if birth rates among the native population drop concurrent with mass immigration (including illegal immigration, which is absolutely enormous). It's a very unhealthy combination.

Yes, it keeps the economic wheels turning but at what societal and cultural expense?

Once contraception became widely available, that was bound to happen, add that to the main reason of the huge expense involved, and there you have it. Same in Europe Even the Chinese are getting worried, to the extent that they have relaxed the one couple, one child law, but the uptake has not been what they expected and for the same reasons as we have here.

But encouraging mass immigration is not the answer.

As long as it costs approx 1000 a month to pay for creche and over 2 euro for a litre of fuel while people are practically forced to move out of Dublin and commute long distances... well I don't think the birth rate will be shooting up anytime soon.

No its not, for sure. A declining native birthrate, with an increasing immigrant birthrate, is a recipe for disaster down the road, especially when there are divergent cultures involved.

Well it is clear our birthrate is below replacement levels. So we aren't replacing ourselves that much is certain.

While they are certainly factors there's also the human element to it too.

Pregnancy takes a massive toll on your body both emotionally and physically.

Many women just don't want to put themselves through multiple pregnancies. Nearly every mum in my circle has had some lasting repercussions of pregnancy, it's not openly discussed as that's not the done thing.

They love their kids but 2 is enough.

Also when you go 3+ kids (especially close in age) , you might need to replace the car to fit in car seats, holidays especially abroad are a little trickier etc.

If contraception was available in our grandparents time I very much doubt they'd have had the usual catholic family of 7+ kids.

Myself and my missus at the now or never age in terms of having children. We have a decent income between the two of us but financially I'm not sure how we would cope with kids, especially with the cost of childcare.

We were in that situation years ago and childcare was a lot cheaper then. It's a huge deterrent, tbh i don't know how people manage now, its like a second mortgage.

I do have the option of a career break for a few years but we would be down to one income. I grew up in a single income house in the 80s and 90s but those days are long over.

Why would anyone bring a child into the world now? Nothing but misery left for them. If global population continues to climb the way it is there'll be nothing for those kids by the time they're 30. Sure millennial people now aren't even allowed a roof over their heads they have to live with their parents forever

In an ideal society this would be possible. Unfortunately for most families two incomes are necessary, children should be reared in the home and not in childcare. Our current society doesn't allow for this to happen.

You're nearly down to one income anyway. The only thing is if both still working you have potential pay rises etc .

However if one stays at home the pace of living slows down there's no rushing to creche in morning or evening. The working parent can then give more focus to their career.

Giving up a career to stay at home is a massive adjustment not to be taken lightly. You're handing over alot of "power" to your OH, if they decide to work late/pints etc there's not much you can do and if you've been stuck with a cranky baby all day you can become very resentful.

Lots of pros and cons to both options.
