Was thinking the same here in Kerry, we are surprised how sunny and mild ir has become after the cloudy damp and cool start 18.3C atm , oceans of fresh air, bit of a slight cooling breeze but lovely.

Not too bad except for the constant breeze which makes it feel quite cool. The constant breeze/wind is getting ridiculous at this stage.

21c here in carrick according to my weather equipment, doesn't feel it but I'll accept it

Very nice day again in Cork, plenty of heat in the sun once you could get some shelter from that bloody wind

In 1 month, the days start getting shorter again. Do not sit around waiting for summer to arrive - embrace the light now!

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

I know what your saying Cluedo but unfortunately it's hard to embrace the light when it's been so dull and dreary for last few days.

I've had to put lights on in morning something I haven't done since the winter.

Roll on nxt weekend, looks as if the azores might pay us a visit,no heatwave but blue skies and sunshine temps touching 20 possibly a little higher ,I'll take that any day of the year 😎 😎

I'd say eastern and Midlands area could be in a thunderstorm warning tomorrow I'm only waiting on met Éireann to issue one

The way it's going we'll be lucky to even scrape 18C and eastern coastal areas like Dublin will be lucky to hit 15C. End of May and 1st week of June is now looking cool with temperatures several degrees below average.

It could be June before much of the country even reaches 20C for the first time this year, this is rather late to be getting a maximum temperature this low across the country. I would consider 18C-20C an average temperature for June, July and early August.

The wind is just relentless for what seems like weeks now. I hope June gets some summer weather sooner or later.

Not windy here in south Dublin thankfully. Some nasty showers could be incoming though. Sky looks very dark.

North Wicklow, no wind at all to be honest, and not for weeks..been pretty calm. The sky does look like Mordor though today. Exaggerated 🙂 some blue.

If only we where in 2018 that was great heat and beast from the east, only year i think we went from winter to summer there was no spring

Latest model output is real beast from the east stuff except that its for early June and not mid January. Long fetch north-easterlies with low pressure from the Urals all the way across Northern Europe and across Ireland for end of month and beginning of June. We may begin to warm up by the second week of June however. Scandinavia has had several very cool months in a row now and this looks like continuing for them well into June with temperatures well below average.

Scotland could be very chilly over the next week with a chance of sleet and snow showers on the mountains there even into the 1st week of June. Summer definitely looks on hold for much of northern half of Europe over the coming 7 to 14 days with Ireland and the UK included in that.

If those easterlies with low pressures in early June verify things could turn rather unsettled for us with cold rain and very breezy conditons. I hope this goes all pear shaped because we do not want this to start the summer, however it's starting to look like any chance of very warm and sunny conditions looks completely off the table for the time being.

Let's hope the model output flips to something warmer and more settled tomorrow.

Another cool day today, but at least there is some sunshine and it's relatively dry compared to recent days. Current temperature only 12C.

Fairly sunny afternoon here in Meath and warmed up a good bit compared to lunchtime, currently 16C.

Today a case of many recent days here in Dublin with sunny spells from time to time and a fair amount of cloud. Sums up most of May 2022 really. The word I would use to describe this month is mediocre or forgettable. I've seen worse Mays, I've seen much better. It's been a month lacking any kind of extremes which is ironic given how warm the mean temperatures are which has been down to persistently above average temperatures and mild nights with all the cloud and lack of advection from a cool direction. Fairly unsettled but not exceptionally so. Warm without any notable warm days. Sunday 8th and Saturday 14th the best days by far.

Running IMT to 23 May so far is ~12.8C. If this were to hold, it would be the second warmest May since 1958 behind only 2008. I don't suspect this to vary much by month's end unless we get the significant push of very cool air for the time of year from the northeast that some models have been suggesting. It'll be a significantly warmer than average May, that's safe to say.

One of the warmest May ever?

You know what they say lies, damn lies and statistics. That IMT is only high because the nights have been warmer than usually.

I think May has been an absolute crap month.

Max for month usually around 24 and we have only hit 21 degrees.

Most days your only in mid teens and it's being very dull, rainy and unbelievable windy. It has to be one of windiest April/May ever, here at Dublin airport anyway. I'm also sick of having four seasons in one day.

We have driven more to school from mid April- May due to rain then we did for whole 7 mth period from Sep-Mar.

We have lights on in house in early evening most days because its so dark.

Indeed, proof if proof was needed that statistics don't tell everything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,941 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

Not only nights appledrop, it's also been because of the pure lack of cool days in the high single figures/low teens. The mean max at Casement here in Dublin for instance is almost 2C above average close to 17C. Our average May max is around only 14-15C after all. This whilst devoid of any notable warmth is just incredible really.

Will see what wind stats have to say come June, I don't have the daily numbers for May. Can't say I've noticed anything unusual personally relative to Ireland in my locale. I'm fed up of the wind myself but that's Ireland for ya.

As I mentioned in a prior post, I am usually for stats over personal perception which goes down as an unpopular opinion. However, this May being so warm statistically is incredibly misleading. Think we would all say 2018 felt significantly warmer and if people remembered it, 2017 too.

It's a very similar month to May 1999. That month was also in the warmest Mays for Ireland but its max all month anywhere in the country was only 21C. It was a notably cloudy month and seen similar sunshine totals to what this May has now. It was a windier than average May as well, the windiest since 1986 at the time.

If you read through the monthly weather bulletin of the month, it almost looks a carbon copy of May 2022!

Quite a dull month, probably feels even more so because spring has been quite sunny up until lately.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,415 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

May is definitely descending into the most unsettled month of Spring and the warm anomaly could take a hit by months end. Here in Meath the temperature over the past week has struggled to get much past 14C.

We are currently 2C above average but this could fall back to 1.5 by the end of the month.

June will be interesting with a substantially cooler than average first half to the month a real possibility.

It doesn't feel like a very overall warm May yet i haven't lit the stove in weeks and often I've lit it up to early June so that's telling in of itself I suppose.

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

Same here. It's totally down to no cool or cold nights and no cold wind directions. The way June is shaping up in the models we could be back to lighting fires or putting on the heating in a weeks time, but I hope it doesn't come to that.
