A beautiful day here in Meath. The models were showing it to be very showery and possibly thundery for north Leinster today but instead it is a dry and fairly sunny and warm day with temperatures close to 20C. It's up there with Friday as the warmest day of the year so far.

Tomorrow looks like a write-off with heavy downpours and rain for most of the day and in that rain, temperatures will struggle to reach 12 or 13C in many areas.

20C now here in Meath, plenty of sunshine and a warm breeze, if it was any warmer we would be approaching hairdryer territory. Phoenix Park now reporting 21C.

Well it's definitely Maytober out there today.

Lashing rain now, just glad I got walk in on school run. I wasn't driving for 2nd day in a row due to rain!

It was drier during the winter months, typicial. This better not be what we have to look forward to for summer.

Looking round the whole world at weather bar India and Pakistan its been quite cool everywhere. Australia has had plenty of rain to quench their drought Spain has seen record rainfall in parts France has seen frost parts of South America snow that never get it as well as Greece earlier in the year plus the Arctic seems slow to melt this year.

From this I conclude maybe we are due a cool and unsettled Summer. The past few haven't been all that bad out West.

Not too bad here in Meath, better than I expected as it is fairly warm still, however by the looks of the radar I won't have long to wait before the rain gets here.

As for the summer prospects, it is very difficult to tell how it will go. I think we are in for a mixed summer which will deteriorate further as we head into August which usually leaves us with a flavour of Autumn. I think overall it will be an average summer but could be on the wet side overall but reasonably mild to warm at times. We may get a few warm spells particularly in June and maybe July but may well end up with a cool and wet August making the overall summer fairly average.

As for the rest of May, it does look unsettled and fairly average temperatures overall. What remains to be seen is this only a temporary breakdown of the generally settled and warm conditions or are we heading into a proper flip to cool and unsettled for the summer. I am hoping we go back to a relatively dry and warm pattern for June and July.

Was in Paris at the weekend (Eurostar trip is great if anyone ever gets a chance). Was roasting. Sunday was nearly 30c, it's 30c there today.

They're supposed to be hitting a totally unseasonably 43c in Seville on Thursday (will be tough for Rangers FC), so it seems to be pretty bloody roasting in some places anyway.

rain has arrived here now and feeling cooler already.

    Lashing rain North Wicklow.

Birds still singing their heads off.

In a way I don't mind as I can focus on work, when I'm not responding to stuff on Boards. 😞

But watch out, after the dry spells we've had, everything is going to grow like crazy !

Wow, that seems pretty early to be hitting 40+ degrees in Seville. More likely to see those temps in July there.

I'm not really sure why people are comparing this May to October. To me, we've been getting weather more akin to what you would expect in August - mild, very cloudy, and damp. Obviously it's not quite as warm as August due to the time of year but otherwise they've been virtually identical. Hopefully this means we get typical May synoptics in August but there's no chance knowing how August generally behaves.

I say bring back May 2021.

I was thinking that yesterday when I was out in the evening, it was sunny but there were the blackest clouds on the other side of the sky and it was blustery, with showers here and there. Felt like your typical July/August weather when the early summer nice spell has dissipated, but a few degrees cooler. I've a music festival on the weekend of the 10th June so I just want that to be nice and I'll be happy.

Friends in the Limousin area of France are having wonderful weather after a mild winter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,448 ✭✭✭pauldry

Yeah much if France has been mild just looked at a world weather Summary yesterday n it said some of the wine growing areas had frost. (Must have been only 1 or 2 nights).

May still looking like it will be one of the top 10 warmest ever for Ireland. Even with the rain the source is mild. IMT is currently around 12.5c and Met Eireann say next week will be mild too so definitely will finish over 12c and possibly close to 13c.

While this May is mild, it is a bit of an illusion because we haven't really had any properly warm weather like what we had in 2018 where temperatures got into the mid 20s at times. What we've had this May is relatively high tempertures at night which have helped keep the IMT well above normal, wheras the daytime temperatures haven't been exciting this month at all with mid to high teens the best most places have seen with a few places reaching 20C every now and then. We needed a sustained area of high pressure over us or just to our south-east in order to get a proper warm spell this month but sadly this hasn't been possible. The transitional high which brought high temperatures to France and the low countries did provide us with 3 settled days last weekend which is probably the highlight of the weather this month.

The rest of this month is looking average with temperatures continuing in the 14 to 18C range with showers or rain most days. Any attempt at building a ridge in the final week of May looks filmsy at best and the Atlantic will most likely just flatten it off into the continent. I hope this isn't the story of summer 2022.

Such a manky dreary windy day in Dublin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,448 ✭✭✭pauldry

I don't mind this weather if its Southerly driven but if it breaks into that non stop Northwesterly sliders with 14c day temperatures that we get in the height of Summer I'll be mad.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,415 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

Not too bad of a day here in Meath, a big improvement on yesterday. it's dry and mild with the sun trying to break through every now and then.

It's one of those funny months where it's been warmer than average but it lacks anything notable. I've always preferred going by statistics rather than people's perceptions of a given month which didn't go down well before 😂 but persistence can very much skew statistics more than extremes can.

Locally, Dublin Airport's mean maximum temperature for this May is currently 16.2C as of May 17th which if it were to hold would make it the 6th warmest since 1942 when records began despite the lack of notably high temperatures. I've certainly noticed a lack of proper chilly days as compared to May last year which there were plenty. However, I can't say it's felt as warm as the stat suggests relative to the climate here. Certainly not a May 2017, May 2018 or the final week of May 2020.

The lack of cool nights is likely partially down to the fact it's been quite a cloudy May so far. Irish stations are around only 30-45% of their average May sunshine as of now, we should be surpassed 50-55% by this stage of the month. It'll be strange to have March sunnier than May. Don't think that has happened since 2003.

I remember last May very well, it was notable how cold it got especially at night during the first half of the month. We had regular sub zero frosty nights. I could be wrong but last May was perhaps more frosty than the entire winter season just gone. Last May was very cool overall and quite wet at times and it wasn't until the final day that we finally flipped into summer with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. That flip was also the start of an overall prolonged warmer than average temperature anomaly which is still ongoing right now, with the exception of an interruption last August which was close to average. September all the way to this week has largely been warmer than average and by considerable margins at times.

Gonzo have you any idea of the weather in the medium term? I know its not possible to predict but we have some outdoor events that we are trying to plan in work by the end of June so a little insight would be most welcome.

It's difficult to determine what the weather will be like in a weeks time, let alone the end of June. At the moment the models are suggesting that high pressure may be back in action for June but being so far out that could easily not happen. June is likely to have some warm and settled conditions but also some cooler interludes from the north-west or north so a bit of a mixed bag. The end of June is 6 weeks away so impossible to tell right now.
