I was at Nada Surf this week in the button factory they were good (maybe not quite as good as they were last time I saw them in Whelans).

But I haven't been to a gig in Ireland in a few years what with one thing and another. Two things.

The BO Jesus Christ....middle aged lads in Ireland need to wash more.

Phone use at gigs...is now constant...there was also a guy who spent I would say 90 percent of the time taking photos shoving his way around the place...

Saw her recently at a small intimate show, a real pro, voice outstanding, great songs. & good crack with stories.

Last gig of the year for me tonight. And So I Watch You From Afar supported by Cherym in the Mandela Hall in Belfast 😁

Gigs '24 - Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball (Gomez), The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Ride, PJ Harvey, Pixies, Public Service Broadcasting, Therapy?, IDLES(x2)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,117 ✭✭✭Dreamweapon

Cherym eh? Saw them supporting Bob Vylan recently and they were giving about being victimised by straight people who had the audacity to ask was their girlfriend (any of) their friend/room mate/sister? Now unless they were all over each other i don't think anyone is automatically going to assume they were gay. By their logic if i'm out and about with a male friend we must obviously be lovers. Folks have little to be worried about...ho hum....

Big on the all mouth and trousers scene

The final roadtrip of the year - a Glam weekend, with a ferry over to Pembroke Dock then a drive to Frome in Somerset to the Cheese and Grain - a venue that had hosted Paul McCartney earlier this year and the Foo Fighters in 2017. Not bad for a hall with a capacity of 500 - it benefits though from being close to Glastonbury and attracts acts for a warm up before headlining there

On Friday though we started with a guy from Bradford - Tony Wright, who has appeared on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and presented Top of the Pops -this was an acoustic gig though with the tour entitled the Tony Wright Acoustic Tour. I am sure he what he was he was doing when he had the T-shirts made up highlighting the first letter from each word in that title

Then onto the main act - a band form the 70s, although only one member survives (quite literally as the other 3 are deceased) - that being Santa himself, Andy Scott, lead guitarist with Sweet (originally the Sweetshop, then The Sweet, but now with the "The" dropped). So yes a proper Ballroom Blitz and a few Blockbusters

Then a drive back along the M4 (with some icy roads on the way to the Motorway) to Cardiff for an act I had seen just over 12 months earlier. Well actually 2 bands as the Support was Sons of the Seventies which had supported the same headliner last year. They basically covered heavy and Glam stuff from the seventies, concluding their set with Sweet's "Blockbuster"

Then the main act - again only one survivor from their heyday, but all the others are still alive and funnily enough the original lead singer had in recent times been talking of a possible one off reunion for Glastonbury doing the "Legends" slot. Yes it's Christmas which means it must be Slade, with Dave Hill at 76 years and 257 days still going strong

Then a drive back to Pembroke Dock for the 02:45 sailing back to Rosslare this morning

So that's me done for 2022

    Summary for the year

37 gigs involving 29 venues across 16 towns and cities

    18 ferries, 6 flights and 12,000km driven

Hopefully 2023 will be bigger and better...

They were also on Twitter accusing another band of making misogynistic comments at an awards show. It didn't happen. The other band *were* casting aspersions but the sex of the band didn't come into it.

Gigs '24 - Ben Ottewell and Ian Ball (Gomez), The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Pearl Jam, Green Day, Stendhal Festival, Forest Fest, Electric Picnic, Ride, PJ Harvey, Pixies, Public Service Broadcasting, Therapy?, IDLES(x2)

Not quite gigs but I also went to Girl From the North Country, the Bob Dylan musical and my significantly more cultured other half also took me to an opera, La Tosca for my birthday.

It was a poor year, having to attend 7 weddings and the obligatory associated stag parties really reduced my numbers and adult activities such as trying to buy a house also didnt help. I doubt I will ever recapture the glory days of 2019 when I think I made 64 gigs and 2 festivals.
