On this - where would you recommend someone would go then, not looking for a dress watch, leaning more towards a chrono as don’t have one and am not enamoured by VC coffin style bracelet. Are you getting alot more by buying a Royal Oak for example in stainless steel than you are in buying a Daytona in somewhat limited amount of white gold? Realistically what am I going to get in Patek €30-€40k range? I’m somewhat cautious when it comes to purchasing so am probably not going to buy off a private individual and am willing to accept I’ll pay more for that privilege.

I’ve experience with neither so can’t give a first hand answer to that , @893bet , @Fitz II and @Cyrus would be the men with real experience to answer that one.

i have had both the daytona 116520 (steel) and VC overseas, also in steel. That was in the good old days when the daytona was a 9k watch and the VC i think i sold for 16k ( a good few years later when the hype train was rolling). I have handled extensively both th aquanaut and the AP Royal oak.

TBH modern rolex are very well made watches, fit and finish is top notch. If i was spending 30k or so on a patek it would most likely be on a dress watch rather than a steel sports (unless it was a 5146 but thats mad money now aswell). The royal oak is a stunner but i would always fret over the bezel ( i had an offshore for a period but it was a little large for my tastes).

Another thing to note is the daytona is pretty dainty (and thats why i sold mine).

Of them all the VC was my favourite but current prices are punchy, but i loved the bracelet.

So in summary buy what you like i guess, in my experience fit and finish wise rolex holds up with anything i had handled its only the finer details (movement finishing and dials) where the others excel.

If you measure a Daytona you will find it is only a 38mm diameter watch. And chronos wear smaller anyway. It wears tiny. Very pretty of course.

I have a VC (white gen 2 version) you are free to view anytime. I think there is a grey deep stream on here as well, and there was a 56 also. With no AD in the country they are rare.

AP a lot more recognisable, especially a RO. I prefer more stealth from a safety point of view and also for the most part I don’t want to discuss watches with strangers; and I have no friends into watches so like low key. VC are a value brand relative to their horological position.

I was paying my mechanic last year and he did a “is that what I think it is” at my Aquanaut. I did a “ah this is a turkey special” 😀.

I would strongly consider second hand; especially for something like a Patek or something with dial texturing like AP. Fakes just don’t go to the level of getting the level of finishing. Quick look under the loop and you will be at ease when the quality is so obvious: Depending on the watch.

What’s in your watch box right now?

    nope,

hard to negotiate a discount on repair when wearing a watch worth 3 times your car value.

very kind offer - I’m leaving the country tomorrow morning but if I’m back and in your neck of the woods I’ll let you know.

Current collection is a Tudor Black Bay S&G, No date Sub, GMT Rootbeer and a Panerai Luminor 1314.

A new overseas chrono blue dial is rather appealing, but longer term I was contemplating a VC Fiftysix complete Calender.

wouldn’t imagine the Tudor BB S&G gets much wear over the Rootbeer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,962 ✭✭✭C0N0R

Does still get some wear - have an Everest rubber strap it spends a lot of time and tend to gravitate towards it when travelling to perhaps less secure countries.

where are you “heading back to”?

There is a dual time VC overseas also if you like a more busy dial. Gen 3 is lovely with the quick change straps.

Re Patek, I had a dress complication annual calendar in white gold; very nice, super quality and very wearable. Very under the radar. Had a rose gold aquanaut, very wearable and comfortable. One of my favourite watches, however the movement quality compared to A Lange & Shonne was not all that great. The aquanaut got a lot of attention when I wore it out…too much, really; people want to try it on, etc. All pateks wear fairly small bar the newer sports and chronos. Daytonas wear small too, they are just over 39mm but its the lug to lug that makes them wear small, but the days of big watches are long gone.

THe only watch I am after at the moment is a nice classic Calatrava (I like the Hunter case back from a few years back with the ivory dial). Thats a real, if you know you know watch.

Anything precious in Rollex is a risky buy at the moment.

    Working in Saudi Arabia.

Considering Chronograph so busy dial isn’t an issue. And easily interchangeable straps is appealing for sure.

How did you find your white gold Daytona In comparison to all?

Nothing I purchase is as an investment so if it loses money it loses money - although value retention is nice.

I love a Rolex, but in hindsight would rather a patek, ALS or an AP any day they are on another level of design. A gold watch is nice, gold daytona was lovel to wear, great feel but soft and got scratches a lot. If you are a small or slim guy then a daytona is perfect size. Had a SS ceramic black daytona also, was a bit "meah" the gold was better.

Surelt plenty of watch shops over there to try on some fancy stuff. VC would be a big step up in your current collection. But buy right and it is a reasonably protected (ie you won’t lose your ass entirely)

I don’t think there is any gold Daytona on here? (Ah that was at Fitz, missed his post in the middle entirely).

Like @scwazrh said above, 30-35 on a PM Rolex is a lot of money when that opens doors to true horological greatness from a tonne of brands.

In Dubai in a couple of weeks so will try get into VC for a look. What is the situation regarding VC Overseas - are they obtainable new at list price at this stage? If so do they loose much value after purchase? I see the overseas is 42.5mm - how do they wear? I’ve attached a pic of current no date 41mm sub - I wouldn’t say I have massive wrists anyway.

you can can get an overseas at retail now grey but AFAIK it's still not a walk in and buy watch.

I love that hunter case back calatrava, will get one some day!

I was offered one from the VC concierge online direct from the factory (August). They offered to post out to Ireland, Black dial not the blue (which i believe is boutique only) and as a walk in, a white dial chrono overseas in Florecene boutique. I was so close to pressing the button on that, left the shop sweating, main reason i did not was having my name down for a weekly calendar Patek (which surprise, has not materialised). In terms of VC the quality was sublime. amazing watches.

you don't need a watch that you have to go onto a 5 year waiting list for.

Looking to get my first Rolex and had my eye on an OP 34 or 36 with a blue or green dial. Learning now about the issue with waiting lists! Are these impossible to get as a new customer? Should I just skip straight to getting one on the grey market? What would a good price for an OP 34 with an olive green dial be?

    I was told 2 years by Weirs in April 23 . . . (for a Sub)

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 10,120 ✭✭✭✭mik_da_man

I've seen some stores with OP in stock recently enough - not Ireland though!

So I would think it's achievable if you were to pop in and ask, they are not in as much demand as a Flutes DJ or Sub/GMT

The countdown is well and truly on for you then 😉

Do you have any spend there, that's usually what it comes down to!

Ah that's good to hear. I'm based in Belgium at the moment and would travel to the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg or probably parts of Germany to pick one up. Or maybe even London. Is my best bet just to call in to as many ADs as possible until I get lucky?

Take this with a pinch of salt very much in accordance with the size of the source, but!

Seeing more & more posts over on r/Rolex from folks claiming they've walked into an AD and left with a Sub/DJ/GMT even a Daytona example included below, on the same day and with zero waitlist or history e.g

    https://www.reddit.com/r/rolex/s/GwVFJogSIr

    https://www.reddit.com/r/rolex/s/FILuUtIQ0V

Plenty more examples from Europe on there too. In your case, being in Belgium, I'd be surprised if you couldn't pick one up relatively easily in Antwerp. The sheer volume of grey dealers selling "new" at near retail offers plenty of choice.
