Came across this on met.ie . A few radio stations / papers would want a read of it

Winter should also read, The trees are bare, animals go to sleep, Boardsies follow the very cold 10 day charts, that says we potentially need to wrap up well.

A lot of the time, the charts are wrong and it doesnt snow in winter which in turn leads to bitter disappointment on here but we celebrate christmas 😉

Horrible windy weather in Dublin, looks like it's going to be this way for the forseeable, I hate this blustery sh*te. Oh well we did have what seemed like months of calm.

This unsettled spell could be short lived yet again. High pressure will never be far away from us over the next 2 to 4 weeks and at times may anchor itself right over us once again. No shortage of high pressure on the short and long range models.

Good to finally see a pic of the February 1978 snow event. Cork Airport had its largest snow depth on record from this event with 26cm lying.

Deep snow cover lying in Kilmacthomas, Waterford.

Might see something white falling tomorrow morning who knows.

Tonight - Scattered showers will follow too, mainly into the west and northwest, some of hail and some of sleet later too, with the likelihood of some snow mainly over higher ground in Ulster. A few isolated thunderstorms are likely too in northern parts. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees, coldest away from the west coast, with some frost and ice.

    Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Friday, will be a cold, bright day with sunshine and showers, some heavy and of hail and sleet too for a time; with the showers most widespread in northern parts. Some snow showers are likely too for a time in Ulster, especially over higher ground.

I'm sowing my first seeds on a hot bed in the polytunnel this weekend. This annual event almost guarantees snow and Frost in about 2 weeks time. (Unfortunately)

so this front that's coming this afternoon - could it be classed as a weather bomb?? the forecaster last night said they'll be a sudden drop in temperature with a chance of thunder

The marked change in temperature could cause a squal line somewhere on the front

That might give a clap of thunder somewhere

Status Yellow - Snow/Ice warning for Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo

    03.00 to 10.00am

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭pauldry

Yes time to go to the mountains in Sligo again for a look at the whiteness. (If it's there)

Can see the squall line approaching Scotland now but not Ireland as we don't have the radar capabilities since its only 2022 yet (hint of sarcasm)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,570 ✭✭✭Tyrone212

Cooler air filtering in to North now, Malin coolest at 6c. Still 11c widely further South.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭pauldry

Went down to 5c behind the front in Sligo where Joanna Donnelly says its going to snow but its now 7c again as the marine effect takes charge. Maybe some Wintriness later in night though.

Electricity went off for a couple of seconds while that squal line passed over. No sferics detected. But had to have been the result of thunder, lightning. Wexford.

Funny when I watched weather on TV it has rain moving in a NW SE direction but in reality is going W to E. Later in night maybe it will change but amazing how stubborn mild air just seems to glue to Ireland. This is definitely going to be the mildest Winter on record even after tomorrow there's 5 more days at 12c

We're surrounded by water. Everything is mild. We have a great climate... and still people complain.

No dangerous weather at all. It's fantastic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭pauldry

Haily rain has arrived and temperature has sunk to 4.2c. Cat doesn't know what it is as he is only 8 months old.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭pauldry

I see the snow ice warning for Sligo Leitrim and Donegal is gone. It was a West East transition and temperatures are a little too high.

Impressive way to clear fog. Couple of Air Lingus flights should do it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,962 ✭✭✭OldRio

Snow showers at this location in Leitrim. Sky went very very dark and snow. Didn't last long. Back to blue skies but cold.

Met Eireann showing wind speeds of 46kmph for West Mayo tomorrow, GFS 06z showing gusts to 97kmph, (data from windguru).

Annoying that they don't include gusts in the Met Forecast, presumably they have that data from the ECM charts they have access to. A neighbour was badly caught out here over Christmas when they showed similar figures but didn't include the 95kmph gusts that came that night, they left some building material outside that blew around.

On another note, GFS is a little out on its own with those gust predictions but it has been very accurate the past few months.

I wouldn't really call today properly cold, it's certainly cooler than than anything we have experienced in about a month so that would make it feel chilly in comparison to what we're used to this winter. Not even a frost last night. Had a few spots of drizzle this morning but it's mostly sunny.

Any colder interludes this month will likely be short lived from the north-west and highly moderated by a warmer than normal Atlantic Ocean. All the models are now pointing towards a significantly milder than average February but are having differences with how dry or wet it becomes.

ECM/JMA going for a mild and Spring like second half of February while the CFS is going for a very unsettled but mild second half of February.

GFS is going for a mild February with any colder spells short lived and moderated by the Atlantic. If we are going to get proper cold weather from the north or east, it is highly unlikely it will happen before March and could easily get pushed to April.

A couple of snow showers earlier. Didn't amount to anything. Nice to see all the same.

Really clear air/deep blue sky today (in Greystones).

A mix of rain and sleet in Dublin 5, it's sad that this is considered to be an achievement!
