and instead of giving out people should be lauding what a stroke of genius that was. Our county man basically got the Connacht council to build a CoE in Mayo

yer man in London is a complete head the ball, should have seen some of the rants he went on in twitter back in the day at some people he didn’t like, nothing to do with Mayo

    Jesus... another goal chance gone.

And a couple of bad wides.....we've all seen this movie before 😢

Hopefully Tyrone's exertions last weekend will tell on them in the closing stages. Although we didn't exactly look paragons of fitness against Cavan…

Some awful loose hand passes by ROD.

A lot of sloppy passes giving Tyrone turnovers and chances to counter attack. Need to cut that out.

Surely job done now, with a decent points cushion too…

Monster score from O'Shea there.…probably the first time he kicked the ball today.

I did not see this coming...had one credit left on GAA+ and initially didn't want to waste on this but threw it on in the end after mowing the lawn 😂

A case of Mayo doing Mayo things . Going up to Healy park and beating Tyrone is no easy feat .

Durcan is some man.. To come back from a cruciate and play like that in the first game. Class is permanent.

Didn't see that coming. New players played really well. Neary is some force when he puts the head down. Durcan and O'Shea were awesome. Christ I'm happy now.

Nearys pace coming off the bench was vital in pulling away after Tyrone brining it back. We will need even more so against Donegal.

Paddy alluded to players coming back in his interview. If we had the likes of Diarmuid and Tommy on the bench too a side could come together

    Super result, delighted

    Well done Mayo!

Didn’t honestly think that result was possible this evening but we were worthy winners

The new rules are built for players like him - fast and direct. Once you get quick ball to him, he’ll burn his defender every time. Tommy Conroy and James Carr are of a similar ilk, it’s such a pity that neither are involved this year.

Well done lads, played like a proper unit today,

Need to back it up against Donegal who in my eyes are over-rated by the Jimbo loving media,

Will HQ drag us to Dublin to play Donegal. Hopefully it's the Hyde

Can't say I called it exacty but I knew we'd get a reaction .Particularly with the McStay situation, the one week break and emotional comedown from Tyrone v Donegal was always going to be a factor.

It's funny, the media/pundits are like the waves coming in and out.Always a narrative around who's a shoe in and a favourite for certain games.

The reality is there's about 8 or 10 teams of similar skill/ athletic ability/experience/S & C who can all beat each other on any given day.

Mentality and belief is what will win it this year.My money is on kerry.

James Horan on the Examiner podcast talked quite a bit about the emotional investment in certain games and how it can be hard to get back up again in a short time after investing a lot of that emotional energy in certain games.

I think we are probably seeing a bit of that in these games. Connacht and Ulster finalists under performing in their first game and I thought Louth were fairly flat. Meath and Cork in same boat as each other.

The likes of Tyrone, Dublin and Monaghan flying it then with a break and time to build up again for a game. I thought Tyrone were flat tonight after the height of last weekend, not withstanding Mayo were excellent and hunted them down everywhere on the pitch. Be interesting to see what the Dubs bring tomorrow, although they have had a fortnight.

i think ohora hit the nail on the head before the game , he criticised the mayo tactics under basically mcstay , hes right rochford got mayo playing mayo football today , they dominated that game and played off the cuff, where mayo looked land locked under previous , you cant fault the attitude either way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,347 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

Was it really that McStay was curtailing Rochford' s genius all this time, and that once Rochford got control he turned a team that were as lethargic as s**te into real contenders?

Rochford got Mayo as close to an All Ireland as anyone since 1951, he may have benefited from Horans good work in the years before it, but he still delivered as much as an Mayo manager has.

When he was with Donegal he was an assistant and they were dire.

Maybe Rochford the assistant is a negative but Rochford the main man is a positive

Rather than all the talk here for the last few weeks about the third coming of Horan, is Rochford really the answer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,550 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

i think the angle was , mayo are much more conservative now then where they were 7 or 8 years ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭Be-Jaysus

McStay could be back for the Donegal match,

Personally id rather he took a back-seat and let Rochford do his thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31 Arkiema

He was criticising Rochford not McStay. He was asked does he expect to see Mayo play any different today and said 'no' because Rochford sets the team up like that for the last 3 years and doesn't allow for any player expression. He went on to say players should form a coup and go against that style. It was pretty strong stuff but also supports a narrative widely pushed online about our setup, Rochford is and has been very much the 'hands on' man in terms of tactics, structures etc.

The worst example I have seen of this approach was agains the Dubs last year in The Hyde, I think McStay was urging the players to push up on the last kick out and Rochford was yelling at them to retreat. What is a player to think when they look at the line and see that happening.

A great performance last night nonetheless and puts us back in contention to get out of the group. Neary could be our man to spring from the bench, defenders worst nightmare when legs are tiring.

    Where's Tommy Conroy ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,588 ✭✭✭Westernview

He is obviously not fit enough to return. From what I hear he was close to returning a few times but then suffered setbacks. Thats what can often happen with players but hopefully he will appear soon. I see a lot of frustrated comments on his continued absense but I'm sure the medical team and Tommy himself are making every effort to get him right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,481 ✭✭✭✭km79

    I hope it’s in Croker
It is in effect a knockout game for us
Win and we top the group
Lose and we will be out

All based on the probably dangerous assumption that Cavan lose both their games !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 118 ✭✭Be-Jaysus

I'm more concerned about Tommy rather than frustrated,

He would be a great weapon to have off the bench should we go deeper into the All Ireland series this year.

The indo has unearthing a brand new player. Paul Durcan. The AI article must not have been checked.
