Darren Coen offers the possibility of points from range, when it is going for him.

I've seen him in enough club games where he would be absolutely smoking and everything going over the bar. I've also seen other games where he's worse than awful (All-Ireland Intermediate Final comes to mind).

Consistency once again is the big problem, as well as a lack of speed. Still should be on the panel.

Coen seems to end up a bit of a "in case of emergency - break glass" type player every summer. You never really expect him to feature until a big game and then he's thrown in cold for an intense 10-15 mins in Croker.

We don't have many natural scorers, he should be used for the final 10-15 mins in most games to get him, and the team used to his role, OR not used at all imo.

Maybe you will be the star but I am not running down anyone. I am telling you what is reality that there is an abundancy of inconsistent displays in these guys. It is a real problem for us now and especially with the injuries. Monaghan are not a top team yet could have beaten us. We have some exceptional players defensively (EOL, Durcan, Keegan, Mullen to name a few) who are keeping us in games with their attacking flare.

We are looking to AOS and McLoughlin who are not the guys they once were. They have been brilliant consistent footballers over the years but yet we don't have guys to push them out who are in their early to mid 20s. AOS does not have the pace tbh and the play is slow when he is on the ball. I don't know what will happen when we hit CP but it is very worrying. This will not win big games where they are expected to go for 70 plus minutes at full tilt.

To say Monaghan are not a top team is ridiculous IMO, they've been in division 1 for the last 10 years, have two Ulster titles, outside of Kerry & Dublin they're in the next group of teams

Spillane: Mayo badly lacking scoring power (rte.ie)

Was pretty worried but now that Spillane says we lack scoring power we are pretty much guaranteed to score 3-16

Mayo need a statement win here and are more than capable of doing it, but they need to show it..

A bit of ruthlessness, if anything to give the county a lift and get everybody on board heading into the QFs.

Hopefully Derry and the Ross will prevail as it will give us a better chance of avoiding the Kerry /Dublin side of the draw on the Monday..

Derry aren't playing and Ros have no impact on who we play next. Donegal v Armagh was a bad draw for us because neither can meet Derry in the QF.

    We can't play Galway

    Donegal can't play Derry

    Cork/Limerick can't play Kerry

Roscommon can't play Galway and Clare can get anyone

You sure that Mayo can't play Galway in the qfs? I thought it was only repeats of provincial finals that couldn't happen. Donegal and Armagh , for instance , who played each other in the first round of Ulster are due to play each other again this weekend in a last round qualifier.

Was having this conversation with a lad last nite. The wording is:

"The draw shall be subject to Provincial Final Winners avoiding defeated finalists from their own Province in this Round and to the avoidance of repeat pairings where possible."

He took it to mean that if Mayo v Galway came out first it was thrown back in but if they got to the end of the draw and Mayo/Galway were the only two teams left then they wouldn't redo the whole thing. Its watery enough wording.

Interesting that Darren came on for Knockmore, Flynn played a full game for Crossmolina and Boland shot the lights out for Aghamore. I didn't think these lads would be released for league games

That's good to see, they need the game time and just what Flynn needs if he is going to play this weekend. Boland must feel hard done by as Bryan Walsh doesn't seem to be up to much.

Great to hear, especially re Fylnn getting back after that injury. Makes sense for them to be playing club as there won't be much competitive training/training matches with the games so bunched now.

I'd be of the view that if they're not nailed on starters, have played less than a half, or if they are returning from injury (like Flynn would be) then let them get the game time.

Boland is a bit of an odd one alright but I just think he doesn't fit into the Horanball system. He's too easily pushed off the ball and I'm not sure he does well at tracking back. I'd probably have him ahead of Walsh but I don't see what happens in training either. Plus scoring 7 points in a club league game against a team who were probably missing a few of their own is probably easier than scoring a few points and playing to the prescribed system of the manager in Intercounty Championship.

Great news indeed to have Flynn back in the mix..... genuinely thought his season was over when I saw the injury up in Croker.

    Is Plunkett out long term?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,662 ✭✭✭Blackjack

Broke his leg in training a few weeks back. I'd say getting him back in the shortened season is unlikely.

I know what you're saying about Boland, maybe Walsh does unseen work, but he doesn't contribute enough for me. In fairness to him, he didn't seem to lose the ball but he took the safe option most of the time. If not Walsh or Boland, I'm not sure what other options are at half forward, maybe Flynn might come into midfield and Aidan will move to centre forward with Orme and Diarmuid. Maybe Darren McHale is an option too at half forward.

I really don't want to see Aiden in the forwards, he slows the game down too much!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,895 ✭✭✭HBC08

The parameters of if were any player who played less than 30 mins against Monaghan was free to play with their club,so basically that was anyone who didn't start.

Flynn played the full game alright but seemed tentive going into tackles which is to be expected coming back from his first major injury. In my opinion he's not ready to play a full game v Kildare but maybe could come on for Aido or maybe Aido could come on for him?

One thing for sure is we have more options than we did v Galway and more than even Monaghan last week.Im expecting a high scoring open game on the weekend,I'm hoping Mayo can shade it,I'm predicting a big game from a few of the forwards on the big pitch against a non blanket, this game will be the turning point of the season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 820 ✭✭✭RedDevil55

It always surprises me when people throw out this line about him slowing down the game. Against Monaghan, Aidan was playing as a deep midfielder and our attack was very lateral and pedestrian. I only remember 2 occasions he got forward, once when McManus tripped him and got black carded and the second time led to a penalty. Probably the 2 key moments that won us the game.

I wouldn't have Aidan in the forwards usually because he's not enough of a scoring threat. However if the choice is between him and Orme/Walsh in the half forward line there's a reasonable argument.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,790 ✭✭✭muddle84

To be fair the Monaghan game was Aidans best performance for Mayo in a long time except for the brain fart at the end but I wouldn't hold that against him! I don't think Croke park suits him at all in the forwards and Kildare will be a completely different game compared to Monaghan! I think he did brilliantly against Monaghan but it was a slow pace game, I expect Kildare to be alot faster paced game with lots of running from both teams and I don't think that will suit Aidan! I don't rate Orme or Walsh either to be fair, but I would take Boland in the half forwards ahead of Aidan!

In saying that, if Flynn is match fit I expect him to be back in midfield and Horan will probably put O'Shea in the half forwards!

That's a slightly different argument. Croke park doesn't suit Aidan for obvious reasons if he's being marked by someone faster than him. They'll just attack constantly and try to run him ragged. He played centre half forward against Kildare in the league and we scored 2-20. So I don't accept that he slows the Mayo attack down.

Re Walsh, its one thing that frustrates me with Boland, taking the safe option all the time, presume he is under instruction however

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,071 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

I think Saturday would be the type of game that'll suit Boland. It should be fairly open and that's where he's at his best imo.

Any idea when the team is due to be announced?

Two changes to the Mayo team from last weekend. Jason Doherty, Conor Loftus in for Aidan Orme and Bryan Walsh.

Mayo team up. Doherty and Loftus in for Walsh and Orme. Hopefully that starts.

Definitely has the engine for Croke Park IMO...
