It was about 6 weeks or so with Delta (we were still in herd immunity mode till all the papers came out, I'd expect something before the end of January, hopefully a lot sooner and if it reflects what's been seen anecdotally then the floodgates should open soon after that.

Even that South African doctor would be holding taking decisions until others confirmed their findings.

So another 3 full weeks of steady or falling ICU numbers and then we should expect restrictions to very quickly end.

If that doesn't happen, will you acknowledge that the Irish response is not based on logic, rationality or perspective?

I see where you're going. We haven't really been dealing with it rationally since the initial vaccination rollout finished, we're in a weird mix of health led, politics led responses, the public mood isn't that rational either but will lead to us taking longer than we should to reopen. Understanding why decisions are made a certain way (and what those decisions will lead to) is different to agreeing with those decisions and, again, understanding what future decisions should be based on, a lot on this thread get annoyed at that but calling for an immediate end to everything won't go anywhere either (even Boris had to give up on that one).

What will be ridiculous is if we have empty stadiums and England has full stadiums for the 6 nations, we're at a higher immunity level and Omicron has done a lot of the rest, however, if ICU spikes, then I could understand why we restrict, I don't think it will, but I'm not in a place to accept responsibility if it does.

I also understand that the latency to do things has paralyzed a lot of decision making, a decision needs to be made 2-4 weeks out to avoid a collapse, if a collapse happens then they get the blame, if they add restrictions and a collapse doesn't happen, revisionists will start saying it was pointless. Lockdowns were absolutely the right thing to do until the vaccine rollout completed but completely unnecessary since then.

However, if there's a scientific consensus to get things back to normal, it will be hard for anyone to argue against it, even Tony will have to acquiesce.

Tell that to those out of work cos of current restrictions.

And it’s a lockdown by stealth with hospitality closed at 20:00.

Got on the DART earlier in the week at 19:30. A handful of people on it. With dark, cold evenings and hospitality closed, it's basically a curfew.

It's not a lockdown or a curfew (you can walk out your front door right now and nobody will bat an eyelid even if you have nowhere to go). It's an (unnecessarily) severe restriction on hospitality that should be dropped as soon as possible.

It's basically not. House parties are the fashion these days. A curfew on the population, it is not.

Full reopening by St Patrick’s Day. Hopefully 🙏🏻

No indoor events allowed to go on after 8pm, outdoor events limited in numbers

Not been able to go for a pint after 7.15pm (last orders and you have 45 min to drink up) every night

Not necessarily - but under the legislation brought in, the current restrictions are due to end in 3 weeks time, January 31st I believe, open to correction

In order to extend them into February the fearless leader will have to give a speech and have to get approval from cabinet

The emergency health powers also expire on February 9th or 10th and will need to be renewed in the dail before then

I can't see any of them being renewed in their current form, the cabinet might want it but backbenchers and opposition TDs will be thinking about their seats

Yeah the rules are shite and stupid but I wouldn't call them "lockdown"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,885 ✭✭✭Penfailed

Sorry for your troubles but I'm afraid that doesn't mean you are locked down.

Yes it does. It’s essentially an 8pm curfew/lockdown.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,778 ✭✭✭irishgeo

Its not a curfew. Youll not be fined or arrested if you go out after 8pm. You can go anywhere. You can go to the shops, pick up a takeaway, buy alcohol at the off licence.

You can book a stay in a hotel and avoid any restrictions on a 8pm closing.

The only thing that you can't do is enter a pub or restaurant.

To clarify you are not locked down.

On the poll on Nphet you can't disband nphet. It was always there in the background, we just never heard of it.

We might need it for the next public health emergency.

It's effectively every aspect of public and cultural activity that is locked/shut down after 8 p.m. Curfew it may not be but as with quite a few of the restriction decisions it's fairly illogical and of very little real use.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,778 ✭✭✭irishgeo

Its hard to judge if its any use to be fair but you can see why they did it.

I think it's just the only tool we've ever had, regardless of how effective it is. At times it made a lot of sense, now it's like doing things for the sake of it. The people were ahead of us excuse is always easy to trot out and hard to debunk!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 133 ✭✭vegandinner

I think you arguing semantics. Hospitality is locked down. I am locked out of hospitality. I am aware of work arounds. A better workaround is to get on a plane and go to London as there is no curfew lockdown there.

regarding nphet, I think those who are calling for it’s disbandment are mostly calling for Tony/Philip to be replaced by competent professionals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,778 ✭✭✭irishgeo

In your previous posts you said you were locked down/curfew.

Do you feel locked down on Christmas day when the pubs/restaurants are closed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 133 ✭✭vegandinner

No that’s one day. Ireland has had almost 2 years of constant lockdown / restrictions. Other countries locked down temporarily, when necessary and opened when possible, ireland locked down and never fully reopened. You had to get off the island to taste normality this summer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,892 ✭✭✭the kelt

Yep that’s it in a nutshell.

Listening to Michael Martin talk about restrictions working so we will keep doing it reminds me of ancient tribes who would have rituals to ensure winter ended or the sun came back, but look it’s works so let’s keep doing it. Averaging 20k a day but this bizarre belief that hospitals and icu are fine because we close the entire entertainment and hospitality industry at 8!

Rather surprising Poll results out this morning, particularly governments handling of pandemic, when people think pandemic will end as in life going back to normal, peoples support for restrictions and the CMO also rated.

That all points to yet more government formation delayed by horse trading. Restrictions support is where it has been for a bit, half and half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 133 ✭✭vegandinner

Wow according to that poll Tony Holohan is more popular that any of the political leaders. Country is suffering Stockholm syndrome.

I'm actually astonished at some of the results 😳
