There is literally no downside for NPHET in making overly-cautious recommendations. They will suffer no drops in income and they are all old farts who aren't going to be heading out to nightclubs.

If they recommended relaxing restrictions and deaths go up they risk being labeled granny-killers. If they recommend increasing restrictions and deaths go down, they are heroes and if deaths go up they can say they did everything they could.

Sure why wouldn't they constantly make the most cautious recommendations possible? - They aren't protecting people, they're covering their arses and spending billions of our taxes doing so.

I mean i saw on rte.ie that it’s the 5pm curfew and capacity of 50%. I mean that’s not viable so while the government can technically say they aren’t closing pubs and the like, they are if you make them close before the Angelus and with half capacity.

How can anybody consider this normal and restriction free is honestly beyond me.

Honestly 8pm closings probably give greater incentive towards house parties and gatherings. At least at 11pm there's some hope folks will head home to bed afterwards, at 8pm it's going to be a pile of mildly buzzed people looking for something else to do.

It's typical of this government that they've once again managed to find a solution that neither follows the health advice or acts in the interest of the public. Everybody loses just so a few backbenchers can posture at making a difference.

i feel so so sorry for the hospitality industry. Once again made the scapegoat for lack of investment in our hospitals.

I can see people absolutely cramming into pubs 5-8pm, cramming in drinking without eating and spilling out sick drunk, having nothing in stomach for hours.

NPHET is also advocating that sporting, theatre and cultural gatherings should not take place after 5pm and that capacity should be cut to 50%, or 5,000 people, for outdoor events.

NPHET are taking the **** piss at this stage.

Absolutely ridiculous, I get table seating and all that but not every pub is a **** night club.

What NPHET's "needs" are at any given point is irrelevant.

The needs of the General Public take precedence over a representative group of the professional classes desires to be proven correct.

Right now,a procession of lacklustre Politicians,supported by a small band of unelected and questionably competent,professional administrators continue to wage a Puritan Campaign against the downtrodden masses,particularly those who have reasonable confidence in their own immune systems,in order to "Change Society for the Better".

What is a definite "Need" amongst ordinary people,is some mechanism whereby NPHET's diktats,cloaked as "recommendations" can be robustly challenged and made to stand or fall on their own merits,rather than depending upon the potentially skewed Worldview of it's leader.
