There's a cohort of people who will never follow the guidance, they'll argue till they're blue in the face that masks don't need to be worn in certain places and make fun of those that do wear them... These people will send our numbers skyrocketing (something they won't care about) and ultimately they and their ridiculous thinking will be the reason we don't get back to normal

Sadly (or luckily - depending on your point of view) we do not have governments similar to that of Denmark or England, ours need to see decreased transmission before they are happy to reopen

Nah, the only thing that is consistent is your lack of understanding.

Before all of this no one would have bat an eyelid at such a number. How many die on a daily basis from aids? Measles, rabbit fever? And before you say it's not the same, they are both diseases which are transmissible.

On average more than 450 people die every day in the uk from Cancer, and 49 people every day from COVID isnt actually accurate.

In June of this year COVID was the 24th leading cause of death in the uk!!

The fact you think this is some sort of abnormality says more about you in all honesty

It is completely normal. About 460 a day die of heart disease in the UK and about 450 of cancer.

Unless you're talking specifically about infectious disease, in which case, if we are being very geographically and chronologically specific, sure, it's not normal. Because it's a novel coronavirus.

Ten years from now it'll be exactly like all the other coronaviruses: children will contract it when they're young and get lasting (if somewhat waning) immunity to it, people will probably get it more than once in their lives and get a mild illness thanks to the prior exposure. Occasionally, as with all diseases, a fit, healthy person will get sick enough to die, but for the vast majority of people it'll be a cold until and unless they are very frail from other disease or very old. People will continue to get post-viral syndrome (dubbed Long Covid with his specific virus, for whatever reason) as they always have with all viruses.

Forty years from now we'll be the old men and women sitting in electric massaging rocker chairs, telling our grandkids via brain link about the plague like battered old war veterans, embellishing details for effect.

One hundred years from now, there'll be another plague, and we'll have learned nothing.

I always find this logic hilarious - People acting normally is the reason we will never be back to normal? Think about that. Your logic is normal behaviour will cause our cases to skyrocket, leading to restrictions.

But even if everyone follows your guidance, at some point your logical conclusion is normality via that route yes? So will that not lead a 'skyrocket' in cases, thus losing normality in your view also?

Exactly, from October 22nd its done. Masks in supermarkets, hospitals and public transport are not restrictions anyway.

Its akin to being asked to wear a seat belt.

Nowhere in the US locked down for only 2 weeks. It was March until May minimum, some places like California pretty much stayed shut for the entire year.

The sorts of masks people are wearing don't work. But sure let's stay in clown world for a bit and go through winter watching everyone breath big plumes of steam out the side of their masks as they enter and exit shops, then pretend they're not doing the exact same thing inside because it's not visible. Why the **** not.

I imagine they would be as legal as those for nightclubs or restaurants mainly, that state no entry .based on a dress code. If there is clear signage and no discrimination due to colour, religion, race or sexual orientation then there is most likely nothing to stop a shopkeeper doing so if they so wish.

Masks are restrictions. Especially when you work in these places and have to wear them for 8 hours a day. They cannot be normalised.

I think it very much depends on your definition of "lockdown". Even San Francisco never went to the lengths we saw in Europe or Australia. Were restriction in place long-term, yes. Were you able to go to the mountains for the weekend, also yes. The general "Everything is shut down" phase in the US really did only last a couple of weeks, then as we realised this was a long haul, we started relaxing things.

We never really realised it was a long haul thing.That was a major failure in our planning after round 1, an apparent refusal to accept that it was a long term issue and not "just two more weeks".And the belief that people would just accept overly long periods of being confined around their houses with businesses shut.We never planned long term for it, we did fire-fighting to maintain a poor status quo in a badly functioning health service and we actually got lucky that vaccines came along as quickly as they did.

We didnt seem to have planned anything at all, surely reports of what was happening in China were available to those in authority long before the fake videos of people dropping dead in the street came out.

If we have an enquiry we need to know when did meetings take place and who attended, what action was taken in relation to nursing homes re staffing levels and PPE, were extra ventilators ordered.

It seems to me that very little action was taken prior to covid landing here and then there was a rush to empty hospital beds so the elderly were ambulanced to nursing homes, many of these elderly probably shouldnt have been in hospital beds in the first place.

Are the facilities in place in the community this winter to bring old people to so they arent bedblocking for months, I see never ending tweets about vax numbers snd how wonderful we all are for putting our arms out, we are only short of getting medals in the post, I dont see much detailed information regarding improvements in the health service, this is worrying me greatly as winter is on its way.

You can always be asked to leave or be refused service. A private business continues to retain that right regardless. Someone can stand in the shop without a mask on, but if the shop is refusing to serve them, they're going to get bored and jog on pretty quickly. If they make a public disturbance, the shop can call the Gardai.

The purpose of the mask legislation is to ensure not only that it can be enforced, but also that it will be enforced. So that it's not up to individual shops to decide whether or not you have to wear a mask.

That said, the plan moving forward is unknown. To make it legally mandatory will require an extension/modification of the existing laws. This will make it easier to enforce, but will also be stretching the meaning of "emergency" legislation.

The other option is to make it official health advice/requirements. While in principle this leaves it up to the individual shop to decide on whether they'll enforce it, it does create a health & safety obligation on the premises. If they're inspected and found to not be compliant, they could be closed or fined. It could also impact their insurance.

Which means in practice it will probably ironically be in the big, airy shops that mask wearing gets enforced, while small local ones are more blasé about it.

There was an article a few weeks back where an A&E Consultant in Beaumont (either there or Tallaght) came out said all the HSE wanted to talk about was how wonderful their vaccine programme was and nothing else, he felt it was their way of distracting attention from the rapidly resuming crisis in A&Es and elsewhere in hospital.

He was saying what we all know, but it is still pretty shocking that it has to be said.It was a small article that didn't get as much attention as it should have, I can't find it now

Regarding closing shops over nó mask. Public transport like the dart will not be closed because staff fail to enforce masks.

I can picture the dart being packed in December and a lot of non compliance with masks.

Masks will be pointless on public transport anyway when everybody is rammed in.
