Was at a Bohs match in the Aviva last night, which was at about 10% capacity with strictly enforced and universally obeyed social distancing measures. Every 2 minutes the 'stewards' (Pulse Security, a private contractor) were hassling people to pull their masks up over their noses. Completely ignores the idea of masks being required where social distancing can't be achieved. It was a 90% empty, open-air stadium. It's entirely performative at this stage and I don't see when it will end. Really sucked the joy out of the event.

Anyway I'm predicting another full lockdown come October. What's the point in mass coercion to boost vax uptake if our society remains a joyless, sterile, micro-managed dystopia? How are we worse off now than we were last summer? What is the **** end goal, considering we've missed the boat on eradicating this virus and will now have to live with it for the remainder of our evolutionary future?

    I hope I'm wrong.

Have to say I am starting to get fearful again about firstly never going back to a normal pre covid no restrictions world ever again and secondly in the short the plug to pulled on indoor dining and drinking.

It just seems that getting vaccinated still isnt enough for them but i don't know what else they can do. hope england will show us life is possible again over the next few months

    Yes and No.

It depends on which bits they want to follow in all honesty. Countries relaxing restrictions ahead of us then no thats ignored, countries doing the opposite, thats to be taken notice of.

Countries using antigen testing in unison with Vaccinations, ignore that, The Neherlands closing night clubs again, look, look at that over there.

Im genuinely at the stage where im thinking what was the point in getting vaccinated in the first place, the goal posts keep moving to the stage where the loonies saying vaccinations wont get us out of this cycle etc etc are starting to look like the sane ones.

The amount of people that believe this will end when everyone has had there 2nd shot is……well, was funny. Wait until they are not allowed enter a restaurant despite having received two doses of a vaccine.

Sorry sir, your vaccine pass expired last week.

Good example of a fear mongering article right there

I'm not sure where the "they" and "goalposts" stuff is coming from here.

We had nearly 1,000 cases yesterday.

When we increased to 1,000 cases previously:

    • April 2020 - Under severe lockdown for 12 days and we remained there for another 5.5 weeks.
    • October 2020 - Already at level 3 with most socialising closed, NPHET hit the panic button and we locked down again for 6 weeks
    • December 2020 - Moved to level 5 when we hit 1,000 cases, after 10-14 days of warning that everything was f*cked
    • July 2021 - Request that unvaccinated people take additional care. Most activities open. Plan to reopen indoor dining going ahead. NPHET asked for guidance on allowing events to start.

So you can see that despite some of the nutjobs on Twitter, we are approaching current case levels from a drastically different perspective than we ever did before. Last year when we hit 1,000 cases in a day if someone was seriously discussing reopening the pubs, they'd have been laughed out of it.

The goalposts have indeed moved, we're tolerating far higher levels of infection in the community than we did before.

How on earth can you reconcile the first and second sentence of your post?

I'm for my first Derry City game tonight in god knows how long, and if that carry-on happens I won't be back at another one.

If the incurred debt were only for the next government, wouldn't be so bad. In reality, our grand-kids will still be paying for this.

As we are paying for our grandparents debts.

    No different.

Curious to think what debts our grandparents accrued that we are paying back?

    Parents maybe, but not grandparents.

And the next generations will have something worse than the banking crisis debt to pay back/service

As we must all know by now, long distance shots with a telephoto lens make people look closer together. I was there. Those cows are far away, Dougal.

I saw an obese woman today - like morbidly obese - American style obese - waddling down the street fully masked up in the 30 degree sunshine.

In the last year the media and govt. has told her to stay inside, don't get healthy, don't do exercise, don't lose weight and order in junk food ...

    Vitamin D ??? nahhhhh ...

Just make sure you have that mask on if you dare go outside.

    Something really really wrong....

How about waiting a few weeks till everyone is vaccinated before you make that call?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,381 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

None of that actually happened though. She wasn't told any of that.

That's hardly fair. He's just extrapolating a little bit from reality, like this guy

I think it's fair to say though that the government hasn't done very much to advise people on what they can do to reduce their vulnerability and risk.

We're a good 16 months into this now and if people had been encouraged on diet etc way back at the start then maybe some lives could have been saved.

As it was, places like McDonald's and Donut shops etc were allowed to open as "essential services".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,462 ✭✭✭landofthetree

Everyone isnt going to be vaccinated in a few weeks.

Around 90% of adults will be vaccinted which to be fair is an excellent uptake.

So thats 90% of 75%( the lastest population stats show around 25% are under 18). So overall only around 67% of people in the state. No chance Nphet will say all restrictions lifed after that. They will be telling us we need to get kids vaccinated. That could take till Oct for 12-17 year olds. God knows how long it will take to approve a vaccine for 2-11 year olds.

Exactly, my point was there was never any advice about losing weight and eating healthy - and obesity is a huge risk factor in getting serious covid.

Seems it's too unPC to talk about being overweight.

Much easier just to tell people to stay at home and order in food.

Just look at Scotland. MM made sure everyone knew he spoke with Nicola Sturgeon when cases were going up a bit and her support regarding Delta.

Scotland are proceeding with relaxation of restrictions on the 19th and ambition to relax further in August, nothing said here about that. This government needs to fcuk off.

Been to 3 LOI grounds in the last few months. Mask on going in then mask off generally watching the game the way and no-one bothers you. Put it on then again as I was leaving as crowds obviously congregate when leaving. I'd imagine ye will be the same. Hon Rovers😉

Fair point re the numbers relating to different times last year, just have to wait and see what actions happen. I think in a few days NPHET might say new advise, cant recommend xyz anymore. I suppose i cant do anything anyway so no point worrying too much.

On a personal level i actually dont particularly care about dining/drinking indoors as opposed outdoor if its summer, its something i enjoy doing once every 2-3 weeks but not the be all. this is just the largest number of jobs-businesses-customers so gets the headlines

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 222 ✭✭franciscanpunk

I'm not making any calls, don't think my skills set will get me on nphet anytime soon!

Just saying what i think, events are already been cancelled that are due to be on after everyone is vaccinated, past experience leads me to believe in the 'few weeks' time things wont be much different(or worse) restriction wise.

There's a reason why Scotland can proceed with easing of restrictions

    Scotland vaccination rollout

    1 dose - 3,963,502 (over 72% of overall population)

Full Vaccination 2,940,202 (54% of overall population

Total cases so some form of natural immunity - 323,000

    Source: https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-daily-data-for-scotland/

    Ireland vaccination rollout

    1 dose - 2,803,491 (56% of overall population)

Full Vaccination 2,192,228 (just shy of 44% of overall population

Total cases so some form of natural immunity - 281,000

    Source: https://covid19ireland-geohive.hub.arcgis.com/

    So not exactly like-with-like

More scared of what our idiots in charge are going to do more than I am of the virus

Getting my Vacine on Monday and heading to a match tomorrow which is something normal but you have to fear this could be a once off and crowds could be pulled from events soon

The constant moving of goalposts is frustrating. First it's vaccinate this number and then it's changed to nope not enough another few weeks etc

Can see lots of public unrest and violence
