What did you get after the boring Golf? Was it the MK5 Golf? I liked that Golf but compared to the Focus the Golf was still very bland and boring.

Yes, the golf was a mk5 1.4 petrol. I remember you had to crawl and beg a dealer to sell you one as they all had several months waiting lists to get a new golf. In the end sold the golf and bought a land rover discovery, that wasnt boring, but was poorly constructed and badly put together.

Hey guys, im being gifted a 05 1.4 corolla saloon the weekend by a friend. He's moving abroad, ive been servicing and repair his cars for years and charging very little labour hence the gift!

Its nct until end of august not sure if its taxed, average bodywork, mileage around 130k i think. I serviced it and replaced rear disc and pads a couple of months ago noting it needed new drop links in front.

What is it worth? He said i can do what i like with it sell/keep. This is the 2nd car this person has given me :) lol

Think you'd get a grand easy for that.

Sure even if it was a total ball of a yoke, it’s cheap and it’s 1.8 tax.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,074 ✭✭✭✭Duke O Smiley

Spent last week in Calabria and Sicily in a 07 E350 petrol, 1900 km in four days. They’re really lovely cars. I’m already looking at cheapies on Donedeal!

The w211 is criminally underrated in Ireland. €636 tax isn't too bad, reliable, decent power (supercharged 4 cylinder) and a properly nice interior. Why there isn't more people after them when they can be had for the same money as a couple months PCP payments on some crappy Romanian or Korean yoke is beyond me.

I always thought they were the benchmark in low build quality mercs? Between unreliability and rot?

Bones of 1k to get the chain done on them too

The previous W210 model is probably the worst of them, especially in terms of rot.

A relative used to have them years ago. Can remember the thing giving around 25-30mpg at best. They then changed to diesal and couldnt get over the instant halving of fuel bills.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,388 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

I would say they have the nicest interior of any 1.8 car for a grand.

Nah, they have their foibles but are reliable enough and the one we had showed zero rust at 16 years.

The chains are the main issue, but most should be done at this stage - easily verified with receipt. Otherwise, it's just an expensive car that costs a bit more than average to maintain. If you can afford it, thay are fantastic.

They have a better interior than the w212 that followed

Great lad to deal with, I got him to pick up the roadbox for the Megane in Holland and bring it back. Dropped to my front door at 11pm on a Friday night!

He's great, he brought me a minter of a bike from Switzerland too, has some very interesting transport methods - his trailers are class

That's how you keep your prices low, drive all night instead of sleeping, saves time & money :D

Older (more reliable?) model, Audi A6 1.9 diesel estate, rarer with the Auto. Decent spec with leather and a few other bits. Still a nice elegant cruiser, but the silver is just bland.

    NCT to 01/22 €2,000

Can't remember the last 7 seater one I've seen...

She's fairly scabby looking but nothing that an afternoon cleaning cow ****e off her wouldn't sort. The auto would probably benefit from an oil change and unfortunately it made them quite thirsty.

Yes the auld autos were heavy, mad how much changes in time where auto are usually now the most economical.
Definitely would get great enjoyment out of sprucing that up

Sure is, the old borg warner 3 speed emptied many a poor souls pocket at the petrol pumps. I just noticed he's looking grand 2 for it:eek: He hasn't a hope.

Thought the same myself, do well to get a grand for it.
