When do you believe we should have allowed that and on what basis ?

We probably should have allowed it when it was proven that covid doesn’t spread outdoors

Any know of how will it work with outdoor drinking. Will it be a case of booking a table for a group?

Are you saying that during cold weather with high case numbers you cannot become infected outdoors no matter what the circumstances ?

Raced City of Lisburn AC track and field meet in Belfast yesterday. Other than the starting blocks being sprayed before each race, the grandstand being closed, and a token announcement by the announcer to remember social distancing where possible, it was just like any other track meet I have ever run in 2019 and before. The changing rooms were even open (though showers were closed) and I don't recall seeing anyone wearing a mask.

The relays at the end without batons was a little odd, but overall it really felt like I was part of normality yesterday. Walked 1.8 miles to a lovely beer garden after and had 2 delicious pints.

Meanwhile, down here we are pissing about with 100 limits per competition. Give me strength!!

Why is it that restaurants that are in hotels will be allowed to serve meals indoors next month but stand-alone restaurants won't be in July?

Isn't the risk of infection the same in both settings?

What reason does the government have for this inconsistency?

I am not buying the "people are still worried" line. Most are long past worrying about a virus that the overwhelming majority of them have nothing to fear from.

I think another shift that may have happened though is that people have realised just how much money they were pissing away during an average week on €3 coffees, overpriced sandwiches, and random stuff when doing the weekly shopping. When you do that shop online you'll buy what you need, not so much whatever is in front of you.

Who the fuq said "people are worried"?

    To quote ...
Or maybe just maybe people are still going careful of themselves and others / waiting for their first / second vaccinations

You don't have to be "worried" to have a bit of cop on and common sense. But then as they say about common sense not everyone has it in equal quantities...

I was in there yesterday and there was a queue for nearly every shop.

Maybe people waiting for the weekend! My experience was just a snapshot in time of me killing an hour on a Friday afternoon

Are they even thinking of indoor events ie 3Arena shows post summer or is it the case of 'outdoor summer lads' and we'll think about indoor events down the line'

We need to ask NPHET first

Was in Dundrum TC on Friday and it struck me how not busy the place was! I expected more activity but it was fairly mundane, no queues into shops and parking was easy to get! I also expected more sales with shops having unsold stock from the past few months but didn’t see anything of note in the places I went into! It wasn’t dead by any stretch but I’d expected more on the first Friday afternoon after opening!

Galway was mental Friday evening and Saturday morning

Hotels are already serving food and drink for essential guests. The only thing changing next month is the fact that more, non-essential guests will be coming into the equation.

Some will take bookings and some will only have walk ins , most will land in between, probably need a few guides here on pubs and the quality of beer gardens in them.

    Seriously?

My opinion is simplistic rubbish but your well thought out opinion is we should we reopen 'food & beverage' because 'is pathetic'.

FYI, outdoor food and beverage is reopening shortly.

I can appreciate you don't like your opinion being dismissed like this and that does come through here but the rest of your post is gobbledegook.

Could they say some bollox like

'Hotel bars and restaurants can reopen because its for overnight guests only who are all staying in the one building. Non Hotel hospitality would have people coming in from all different households/areas'

    Yep pure bollocks

I, and thousands of others, broke restrictions yesterday afternoon. One of the largest outdoor gatherings in Ireland in over a year...and it failed to make the 6pm or 9pm news on RTE. Even UTV managed to report it. They also downplayed the numbers on the RTE website. I spoke to a guard on traffic duty who had watched the whole march pass by and he estimated 5-6,000 people. RTE reckon there were only 2,000 people there. I'd say a quarter or maybe a third of people (including me) weren't wearing masks.

In London there's not many restrictions on hospitality or retail any longer but SMEs seem to be pretty devastated from the lockdowns regardless, a lot of closures evident across the city. Some places like Soho are still extremely lively but in other areas of the city outside of the main tourist areas many local businesses clearly never reopened and don't look to open any time soon. Most chains and franchises are unsurprisingly doing good trade again though . Hopefully just a case of businesses not yet acquiring enough staff/resources to fully reopen again rather than not able to but we'll see I guess, wouldn't be surprising if it is a case of many smaller businesses just not being able to weather the last year financially. But the fact there's still none or very few tourists may also be part of the reason why so many businesses have still not opened again.

Mandatory hotel quarantine to be targeted at vaccine resistant Covid-19 variants

    Wow ... just WOW...

they mean the variants that the vaccines work against ?
Or they mean new future "what if" scenarios where the variants are vaccine resistant ?

Christ, if people think travel restrictions are ever going to end I have some beans to sell you ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,398 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

Apparently the quarantine list is going to be targeted towards "variants that may escape vaccines"

So there'll be no quarantine list then?

    What was actually said
Minister for Environment, Climate, Communications and Transport Eamon Ryan has said that the mandatory hotel quarantine system will be refined to target Covid-19 variants of real concern.

He said it would be targeted especially to variants that may escape vaccines.

Speaking on Newstalk radio, Mr Ryan said there was encouraging new data about the efficacy of vaccines against variants.

Restrictions are being eased gradually to prevent a surge.

    The science isn't particularly complicated.

well it obviously is if you can sit it in a bookies with your coffee and sandwich but cant in a coffee shop. please explain the science to me on that ?

Surely the bookies have their seating areas closed off at a minimum and don't have live sport on tv?

I'd imagine that you should only be able to go in and place a bet and then walk out once placed?

nope, you can stay from 10 in the morning till closing time. you can get your breakfast, lunch and diiner in the shop next door and eat it on the premises watching your favorite sport . science my arse.

Sure. You can choose to break any number of laws.

That doesn't make it right though.

Oh please! What kind of sanctimonious grandstanding is this?

Outdoor event, people spaced apart, and a virus that is little to no threat to almost everyone there anyway but especially not in that environment.

If you'd wanted to go there was nothing stopping you. You could have masked and walked well behind everyone else or something if you felt that strongly about it.

Of course it's happening, bookies want to make money and they love people staying in their all day. Its part of their business model. Question is and the wise men on here can't answer for some reason is why is it legal for me to have a coffee and a sandwich indoors in a bookies but not in the shop I bought it in ?
