I guess I had found the wrong place then because this is what that place looks like today:

Well there we go, mystery solved lol.

Ahh, looks like the actual place is called Dawley even though Google Maps doesn't call it that… so I had completely the wrong building, lol.

Cool that you managed to find an image of it from back then. I wonder how their ex-rental stock ended up on eBay.

I'd say the seller went in and either hoovered a load of stock up when they were closing or might be somehow related to the shop. He has a good few more.

When the good people of Dawley weren't watching The Terminator, they were spending time with Beverly Hills Cop

My memories are of a grubby unit, upstairs in the Castle Shopping Centre in Swords, and QTH on Dawson Street, for my ZX Spectrum gaming needs in the 80's.

Expanding my efforts of a complete GTA PlayStation collection to a general Rockstar collection. Surprisingly I haven't played any of these aside from Wild Metal of all things. As a teen I went for quantity over quality, every Christmas I would get as many games as possible from Play.com and obviously missed them, although I don't ever recall seeing Smuggler's Run or Midnight Club in Xtravision to even get them on my radar in the first place.

I absolutely love Midnight Club 3 and Los Angeles, if I could get a sequel to any game it would be Midnight Club.

Angel Studios/Rockstar San Diego seemed to have a pretty solid run with Midtown Madness (another series I haven't played!), Midnight Club, Smuggler's Run and Red Dead Redemption.

Need to start giving these a go after I finish San Andreas.

I loved Midtown Madness back in the day.

I played it to death on my PC when it came out.

Only for it GTA3 would probably have looked very different.

It has dated quite a bit though, but you can find it on various abandonware sites

Cheers for that. I must see if I can get them working on the Steam Deck. Older games run well on it but the simpler gameplay of older titles also works with the pick up and play nature of a handheld!

Another (new to me, old to the forum) Atomiswave SD cabinate appeared over the weekend. Spend some time cleaning it down as I had taken it apart for its short journey to my place from Cidermans.

    Screenshot 2025-06-17 at 17.05.53.png

    Will be a small project for now, todo list;

    • Order up wood (pre-cut) for internal PCB mount and also the large rear access cover hole
    • Ordered up a replacement an instruction strip as the other one seem glued down so couldn't clean the panel without removing/ripping
    • Look to do something with the misc power supply thats in it. If I can get an orignial one for it great, but its also missing its cage/cover. Will see what makes more sense.
    • I have a notion of maybe a MiSTer setup for vertical games?
    • …then see how it will fit in the 'office' at home - there might be a Dinosaur King cab coming up for sale soon to make room :)

    Enjoy!!!

Id be interested in one of those dino cabs deffo

I think I remember playing on that one a few years ago at one of the beers way back when. Glad to see that it's gone to a good home!

Here's a mad request Kerbdog, would you be able to look at these images and let me know if it's the same Atomiswave cabinet? Chips on the top side panel in the third photo would be a good identifier if so.

Years ago, I think about 2011, I bought an AWSD cab from Mitch (my first candy!) but unfortunately the monitor chassis went kaput. Poor oul Mitch tried to fix it to no avail (I knew absolutely nothing about getting a chassis fixed at the time)

It sat in my parents kitchen for a little over a year, maybe closer to two, but in the end he had to take it back.

If I remember, Ciderdude bought an AWSD from Mitch too absolutely years later that had been sitting with a broken monitor chassis. Always wondered if it was the same one.

Thought my photos of it were long gone but I found them among my Photobucket bulk download before I deleted my account years ago. Behold, the glory of 2011 digital photos!

When I was with Ciderman picking it up, Mitch did recall a story that the cab was a disaster for him. The scuff on the top left side looks the same, 95% sure its the same cab! I did a lot of 'magic eraser' on the cab over the weekend and a lot of the scuffs/marks actually faided back or disappeared.

    PXL_20250618_223811792.jpg

I only noticed when I was checking it out that the chassis was serviced by giz10p's Craig in 2011ish. So that might have been when Mitch was trying to get it sorted.

The strange thing is, when we picked up the cab in 2013ish the screen was working fine. He prob had more work done to it when he took it back from you. It was also missing the control panel but that was fine as I had another a work cab.

Update so far - B&Q timber cutting service came through so it now has a back panel and a game PCB mounting board. Exciting times :D

Dates definitely seem to line up too alright. That's absolutely gas, delighted to hear it's still in the A&R family.

Thing drove me absolutely demented all those years ago. I was waking up having nightmares about it sitting broken in my folks house haha.

Might be worth reaching out to Yaton via his new(ish) website for a new back panel actually, always seems to be taking cabinets apart and selling them in pieces.

That's mad. Keeping it in the family 😀

I do that with every issue ive encountered with any broken cab I've had .it's terrible . Just naws away at you at night . I've ended up getting out of bed in the early hours of the morn many times to attempt some fix ,and usually at these times ,half asleep ,things never work out well, but sometimes by Jesus they do and you get the best peaceful sleep you've ever had 😁

When my astro city arrived from Ronnie it was a no go . Nothing .

It had a tro sync chassis installed which I knew nothing about and I spent 3 days and nights fumbling about to eventually find a random connection loose

Glad I'm not the only one! They're so big you can't really hide them away in a drawer and forget about them, they just sit there taunting you. 😂

Your Astro arrived and the monitor wouldn't turn on? Argh! I'd say part of you died inside when that happened. Folks don't seem to realise that buying a candy cabinet also seems to come with an unwritten need for a crash course in electronic. 😁

Working in an arcade leaving a machine 'on the back burner' is very easy, I suppose its why you can go to an arcade a month a part and the same machine can still be down, sometimes arcade stuff gets VERY complicated, so can see being new can be tricky to figure it all out. Also moving machines is a no go to be honest, usually something comes lose, best case a loom, worst case caps, etc. Lots of machine I've sent and recieved leave fine and dont work on arrival.

Feckin'… tell me about it. I'm TWO chassis repairs in on my Blast City.

I haven't even gotten around to actually putting the chassis back into the monitor from Round 2 because it's just been tormenting me so I keep putting it off. :-D

I am determined to build proper brains for it this time though as I've decided to move the Naomi 2 setup to the Naomi (which I also need to fix the damned monitor on, hoping it's just a broken pot on the neckboard for blue values otherwise it has the potential for the blue gun to be dead).

Anyway yeah, currently waiting for a GERT VGA 666 V1 adapter on the way from China which allows me to output native 31khz and 15khz via the GPIO pins on a Pi5 for video then just going to use my J-Pac for controls.

Gonna grab a pre-built image from Arcade Punks and augment it with some of my favourites.

I did have a PC based Hyperspin build that I was working on for it but honestly the Pi5 is powerful to run mostly everything I'd want to run on the thing at this stage. It'll even emulate up to PS2 at this stage.

Emulates the likes of Tekken 3 / Tekken Tag just fine. I'm hoping it'll run Time Crisis at a decent framerate too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,290 ✭✭✭MrVestek

Ohh… and then when the monitor is back in the Blast then I need to get to work on figuring out why certain P2 buttons stop working unless I jiggle one of the wiring harnesses in just the right way, I suspect something is accidentally grounding out in the harness but JESUS that's going to be a pain to sort out.

I'm tempted to fork out stupid money to just buy a new harness but I can't seem to find one that goes for any lower than €130 and it's just a bit much to be paying.

Regretting selling my original harness now after I got the JVS compatible one. 🙄

Oh god I know what you mean. You've all the parts ready to go but just don't want to try it in case that doesn't work and it transpires that it's an even bigger, more expensive issue!

Did you ever figure out what went wrong the second time with the chassis?

Have you ever thought of a MiSTercade in it by the way? Could run all your PS1 era Namco stuff and it's stupidly easy to get the likes of Time Crisis running with a Gcon.

So lucky I never had any major monitor issues like the two of ya. Yet to even have one that needs to be recapped .

Worst I've had to do is just swap brand new tube and chassis in to a few

Im waiting for the time one goes t1ts up and I've to flute around . It's only a matter of when ,not if .

J have shocked meself on the flyback and also necked one .that sound...I thought it was a bomb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,290 ✭✭✭MrVestek

All I know is that the flyback started arcing and took out one if the brightness circuits with it.

Still no idea how or why it happened. Grant couldn't make any sense of how or why it happened by simply disconnecting the VGA cable either.

I think I'll stick with my idea behind the Pi5 for now.

No need for Guncon compatibility as I have an Aimtrak ready to go.

Dig out a Irken MiSTer DE10-Nano JAMMA Expander which I got ages ago and never tried out. With the additional cab, it was time to test it. Reworked the stepdown transformer for the cab, it has new features now it being electrically earthed! Fancy feature.

    PXL_20250621_204541106.MP.jpg

If you have used a MiSTercade, it simlar but different. It doesn't use custom key configs, but will send the special commands to bring up the menu, select a menu item by using control button/stick combinations. It takes a bit to get used to. but then its seemless. Just works.

ZPF for the Megadrive finally arrived.

I brought it to work, along with a Nomad to play it on.

Sadly, looks like MDT meetings and Clinical File updates take precedence in the HSE... so it'll have to wait until lunchtime!

    The cheek!

So looks like the CRT in the Naomi Standup that I bought might be toast. Replaced suspected problematic pots on the colour adjustment circuit on the neckboard and the green gun still won't fire.

Tested the drive transistors driving all three guns and I was measuring a .525 voltage drop on diode mode on the multimetre for all three which seems to indicate that the transistors are working fine if I understand what I'm doing.

Next thing will be to take out the chassis entirely (or try my best to get underneath it) to test the main transistors on the main part of the chassis but if they all read as good then yeah… the tube is likely done for.

Unless anyone knows anybody local that might be willing to attempt to rejuvinate it for me?

In saying that @dav09 has been amazing and has offered to sort me out with a replacement if worst comes to the worse so that's something at least.

Definitely buy something off of him the next time he goes insane and decides to get rid of a bunch of stuff from his lockup. :-P

After 24 years of being into this arcade lark, I finally pulled the trigger and purchased my first candy cab - a Sega Blast City.

Ordered from the mighty Astro Boyz in Paris 3 months ago, they provide a full restoration and refurbishment to order service. The cab was dispatched a week ago so I'm counting the days.

    IMG-20250618-WA0006.jpg

Although Blast City cabs typically come with Nanao MS2930 or MS2931 tri-sync monitors, I chose a refurbished Sanwa PFX tri-sync monitor.

The covergence and 'black goop' issues that Nanao MS2930 and MS2931 monitors are known for prompted me to go the Sanwa PFX route..
