My own opinion is that for older Primary Classes and Non-Exam Secondary it will be after Easter Break (April 12th) at the earliest.

Despite the absolutely ridiculous headline that directly contradicts the findings, please read the actual article: "Absences matched infection rates in the wider community."

Schools are every bit as prone to spreading the virus as the wider community, not less. That is in exact, exact contradiction that everything Tony and Meehoe and all those muppets spouted for months upon months as cases got worse and worse while they stubbornly decided to keep schools open.

This was a deadly, murderous lie. The question is when exactly are they all going to prison, or are we simply going to continue with this utter farce and shambles of a government.

Disgusting lies and no one in the media challenged them.

Jesus. Settle down there, Helen Lovejoy.

There is a study/report coming out soon looking at the cases in children in Ireland should be interesting reading.

The leaks seen at the weekend are probably closer to the truth.

Special needs schools are into their second week now, I would not be surprised if LC are back Monday week 1st March.

Ecce and Primary the week after on the 8th and then last on the 15th all remaining secondary.

So you think that there won't be any phased return for mainstream primary, throw them all back together?

Hard to know what they are thinking with regards to schools as every leak is slightly different to the previous one and then the opposition are out doing themselves with madcap ideas.

Depends. Some had the full week, some just the Thursday and Friday. Depends on what they decided.

It’s only primary special schools that are back. Special classes in secondary aren’t back until 22nd feb.

I knew that, I just had a brain glitch and forgot that primary schools don't have same midterms as secondary and wasn't really sure that primary special schools followed the same calender.

Ronan Glynn using the term "phased', "slow", "have to take note of numbers", "impact", "mobility" when asked about schools. Makes reference to the new ECDC guidance with regards to schools. Said that it has to be a slow phased return. Didn't say we can't have a big bang return but reading between the lines we know what he is saying.

to be honest at this stage i wouldn't be surprised if norma and co come out tomorrow and say all schools are back monday just to confuse everything more.

"The NI Executive is expected to discuss the return of pupils to schools at their meeting on 18 February but it is not clear if ministers will make a final decision on an 8 March return at that point".

They are probably waiting to see what NI are going to do.

    Also

"Schools not a 'major source' of transmission".

In fairness.. if it was just up to NPHET the entire country would remain in level 5 until we had 100% of the population vaccinated... And then probably an additional 6 months *just to be sure*

    key takeaway from link

The study was unable to determine whether any infected staff or pupils had caught the virus in the school setting.

did you actually read it yourself

Yeah part of me is expecting an announcement this week. Probably with compulsory staff training to be completed by next Monday morning or some ****. It'd be entirely on brand for the DES.

Well let's hope that the government have learnt their lesson from the utter stupidity that they allowed for our "meaning" Christmas.

Who is this Norma Foley you speak of? I’ve heard the name a lot but no sign of her at all recently.

There will likely be an announcement this week, about time too. Leaving people with no clear message and media leaks is not acceptable.

Don't know how they expect people to support anything with the lack of leadership and ongoing poor communications.

Pandemics can end through herd immunity, vaccination but also with societal acceptance of the disease and its risks. I don't think we're too far away from people saying enough is enough.

A lot of people I know who've followed every instruction from the very start are starting to wane now, myself included.

Does anyone else feel their stamina and resolve is reducing? I think it's very difficult this time.

Feeling very fed up the last week. Have been following the restrictions for the most part all along. I still see my parents but they live next door to us and none of us are doing anywhere so we are sort of like one family. But other than that have been doing what we are told. But my kids miss their other grandparents and if they'll have us we will visit over Easter. We live around 15km from the beach but haven't been anywhere except the supermarket for months. Have stopped bringing my kids out altogether.

There is no hope being offered to anyone at the minute. Talk of things not reopening until September. That's 7 months away! Way too long. There needs to be a clear plan with something for us all to work towards. When cases get to xxx this will happen. Carrot and stick approach.

I feel ok. Im trying my best not to read too much. Rarely in the car so not hearing any radio stuff either. That has helped. Ive also reduced contact with some negative nelly friends who have been constantly moaning and as cliche as it sounds I have been really trying to focus on how fortunate my little family are. My kids are healthy, school work has had some ups and downs but overall they are doing really well. They are real troopers so I know they will adapt to whatever is thrown their way. In normal times we rarely saw family so thats not something we are dealing with.
I do feel for people, so many are really struggling.

i agree its more difficult this time
the restrictions being put on peoples personal freedoms i find hard to take
add in the fact that there is hundreds of thousands of people going to bed tonight who know that when the pup and wage subsidies end they will be out of a job or will end up getting a huge pay cut.
these people want the virus to go away and pray it will but know when it does and things start opening up and restrictions start easing the economic nightmare will then become very very real.

in my professional experience we are looking at a 2 stage recession that will last many years.
slowly it will dawn on people the real cost of locking down, political and social upheaval and with huge levels of wealth inequality.

I am finding this period of time since Christmas the hardest so far. I have not seen anyone I know apart from my Husband and Kids since December 18th when I collected the Kids from School.
I have seen Delivery people but all other interactions have been phone and video.

I have not seen my mother and one sister since last August. The other 2 sisters are January 2020 and August 2019.

But I keep reminding myself that we are lucky. Lucky that my Husband can WFH. Lucky that I didn't return to work as planned in 2020. Lucky that I am a SAHM and can help the kids as needed. Lucky that neither of them are in Exam years. Lucky that financially we are ok.

    One day at a time.

I don't agree with your part there in bold at all. Pandemics aren't some weird mind trick that ends when people decide to accept it and move on. The reality is that we need enough people vaccinated to tip us into a place where opening society back up does not overwhelm our hospitals and cause unnecessary sickness (who knows for how long that will last). That's if we can manage to keep out new strains that are either less effective or not at all with regards to vaccinations. We can't just will this reality away.

But yeah, I don't trust this government anymore, especially the bs that happened with Christmas, travel, and the schools and NF. No one was going to stop her despite them knowing the proper consultations hadn't been done. If not for the unions, our hospitals might have very well been overrun and many more deaths. Crazy stuff.

I don't feel my stamina/resolve leaving me, but it is more difficult this time for sure. I miss having a full life and I'm sad to see my kids missing their friends and activities. I hate the way it's pitted some of us against each other. One of my kids' best friends we would be quite close to their family. I know they still organise play dates get together's at their home with a small handful of other friends. This only came to light fairly recently. It's made me lose a lot of respect for them tbh and I don't feel the same way about them now. I'm sick of it all, but I won't put ourselves or anyone else more at risk because I'm feeling this way.

Starting to wane a bit here alright.
Whereas last March/April we all seemed to be "in it together", it feels a bit more 'them' (NPHET/pro-lockdowners) and 'us' this time around.

I asked my son this evening what does he find hardest in the lockdown.
    "I miss my friends"

So from next week, we're organising outside playdates with any like minded classmates.

I really hope they get the schools open up again soon.
